INTRODUCTION

Learning is a continuous process that is built upon

prior knowledge and results in an increased understanding of
the subject in question. School program help students to learn
and develop something new where they are able to compete
globally. In the continuing quest for effective education,
educators have been hampered by lack of information on the
procedures used to complement school improvement projects
and on its outcomes. According to the National Association of
Secondary School Principals’ (NASSAP) Commission on
Restructuring ( 1992 ), School Restructuring is defined as “ the
reforming of school organization relationships and process to
increase students learning and performance.” In some cases,
secondary schools today struggle to allocate resources such as
classroom space and personnel while maintaining quality
instructional delivery and students’ retention.
As the Dep Ed program gets better like K to 12
producing high percentage of enrollees, they are finding it
increasingly difficult to schedule classes in limited facilities. As a
result, some schools including Monreal National High School
implemented this program due to the weak foundation of the
land area of the school. Corollary to this, the effectiveness of
this program had been questioned. Programs like KIPP
( Knowledge is Programs Power ) charter schools have been
carried out a school day that runs from 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM
each day ( Hemig, 2008 ). This longer day is combined with a
combined with a school year that requires students to attend
every other Saturday and also for the three weeks during
summer Cuban ( 2008 ) reported that there is little research to
support that increasing the length of the day or the school year
alone will produce any change in academic performance.
The study in its full context will examine the
effectiveness of 3 day school week program. Although the total
number of days in a school year is reduced in the 3 day
schedule, the total number of minutes per day is increased so
that the students are attending school for the same amount of
total time as students who attend on the 5 day schedule. This
study intends to provide a reliable framework that can find
solution in addressing problems in the programs that may
appear during the conduct of this study.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research seeks to answer the following question:

1. What are the students’ perception on the effectiveness of

three day school week schedule?
2. What are its impacts to the students’ attendance, discipline,
and academic performance?
3. What are the other recommendations to improve the 3 day
school program?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

STUDENTS
The students can use this research to clarify issues
regarding their class schedules and its benefits to their studies.

TEACHERS
This study might be useful to teachers to have an idea
about the effectiveness, pros and cons of the schedule.
SCHOOL
The school can use this study to develop the school’s
schedule and to prove to the people that this 3 day school
week is effective.

RESEARCHERS
They might utilize this research in the future that
would able them to differentiate in conducting the said activity.

COMMUNITY
The community can use this study to explain to the
community and expound the dilemma towards vague
understanding about the schedule.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK/ CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Research indicates that quality implementation is an

important element of any effective innovation and many factors may
affect the level of implementation attained ( Meyers, purtak et al. 2012 )
Proponents of the four-day school week have provided
research that proves that altered schedule has “ increased attendance,
increased planning time for teachers, and in some districts has each
increased savings utility, transportation, and food costs” ( Anderson &
Beasley, 2007, p.3).
The four-day school week in 2010 was able to determine
that “ student academic achievement has not been hurt by the change in
schedule but, did indicate that the adaptation of a four-day school week
does share a positive significant relationship with performance in both
reading and mathematics” ( Anderson & Walker,2012,p.1)
For students and staff, the added day off allows the
opportunity for business and medical appointments without the
hindrance of missing time in class. During traditional school week, these
appointments students and staff to miss school ( Hewith &
Denvey,2011).

Core components that can be used to successfully implement programs

are: preservice and inservice training, ongoing consultation and
coaching, and staff evaluation. Core components do not exist in a
vacuum. These components are contained and supported by an
organization that establishes facilitate administrative structures and
processes to select, train, coach, and evaluate the performance of
practitioners and key staff members. The organization also carries out
program evaluation to provide guidance for decision making and
intervenes in external systems to assure ongoing resources and support
for the practice within the organization (Fixsen, Naoom et al. 2005).

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The purpose of this study was to identify if the school

schedule program was effective. Using a qualitative case study
design to examine the implementation of the three day school
week program will allow the researcher to understand social
phenomena with the least amount of disruption of the setting
as possible( Merriam,1998). Using a case study design will
assent the researchers to explore in the depth an
event, process,or activity. Cases are bounded by time and
researchers collect detailed information using variety of data
collection procedures over a sustained period of time( Creswell
2009;Stake 1995).

RESEARCH DESIGN

The study employed a survey method in investigating into

students’ perceptions on the problem of effectiveness in three
day school week schedule. The target population for the study
was suitable for the study since the data was collected through
questionnaire. The target population for the study was the
randomly selected grade level of MNHS in both Senior and
Junior level.

POPULATION OF THE STUDY

The target population consisted of 480 students in all randomly selected
grade level. This information was retrieved from the office of
administration of MNHS.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The instrument used for collection of data was a semi-constructed

questionnaire designed for eliciting information on students’ opinion on
the problem of effectiveness of three day school week schedule.
Questions were dignified making used of four-point scale response
format(SA=Strongly Agree,A= Agree,D=Disagree and SD= Strongly
Disagree). The questionnaire were contained fifteen questions assessing
the students’ opinions regarding the effectiveness of the said schedule in
their respective classrooms.

METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

At the various grade levels, the researcher introduced themselves to the
principal,classroom teachers and the students.
The researcher then randomly selected the number of students needed
for the study, gave them the questionnaire and brief explanations
regarding how they were to respond to each question. The respondent
were also encourage to ensure that the responses were called and
analyzed.

METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS

The data collected from the students were analyzed using the
frequency distribution analysis and percentage of the students
responses to each item. Also it was calculated and tabulated to
provide answers to the research questions.
