Dear Sir,
First you have to choose type of Pile based on N value and load requirement and existing

adjoining structure arrangement. Pile can be designed based on IS2911-2009 (part1/sec1
&2)-2009. For bored cast in situ minimum dia of pile is 450mm. Pile capacity may be worked out
based Static formula as per IS2911. A typical pile capacity calculation for 450mm dia bored pile
is attached for reference. Based on allowable deflection and safe load assesed based on soil
report, we can check and worked out the reinforecement for pile. I have not shown the

Dear Rajan Sir,

The material posted is very useful. The soil design of pile, if you have it with you as a note, may
also please be posted.

General Sponsor .

Dear Er. Vk.Wits,

See my SEFI post dated 5th June 2013. To arrive at Pile Capacity in Soil we use ASTM Load
tests. Also allowable Pile Capacity is given by Geotech. Consultant and we Structural Engineers
just pick-up a Pile Size and its Pile Capacities from the table Geotech. Consultant gives for
different sizes of Piles. I have noticed that in India , Structural Engineers get in to
calculating Pile Capacities, which is a Geotech Specialty.

Dear Er. Jaykumar,

In USA Pile Capacity is derived from ASTM Load Tests. They are given here. Allowable Pile
Capacity is about half the Ultimate Load and near 10 mm to 12 mm Lateral displacements. I
am sure your Geotech. Consultant has based his Pile Capacities on such testing. You will also
need Lateral Load Capacity of Piles.

Here are the three ASTM Pile Load Tests.

D1143 / D1143M Standard Test Methods for Deep Foundations Under Static Axial
- 07 Compressive Load.
D3689 - 07 Standard Test Methods for Deep Foundations Under Static Axial

Pile Design,

Refer IS 2911 & Handbook of limit state design of RC memebers by VK ghanekar & JP Jain

Pile cap design SAFE software.

model raft and provide spring stiffness constant in vertical and horizontal direction as given by
geotech consultant.

or approximately we workout stiffness as follow,

as you know, F=K *Deflection

Stiffness K = F/delta,

mostly, 12mm permissible vertical deflection and F is pile vertical capacity.

horizontal deflection 1% of pile dia as per IRC ,& F is Horizontal capacity.

first of all thank you all for replying.

i read this example but he did not consider the moment Mz in any step of designing. is this a
correct procedure?
as RAJAN sir said please tell us step by step procedure in staad pro or SAFE.
i still didn't got the solution . please help .

Dear Sir,
At present I herewith attached the pilecap design as per BS code. However I shall sent the pile
design and pile cap manual design shortly.
