MT1810 Number Systems: January 2017 Test

All five questions should be attempted

1. (a) Write the complex number 2 − 2i in exponential form.
(b) Hence, or otherwise, find all solutions to the
equation z 3 − 2 + 2i = 0.
(20 Marks)

2. (a) Find integers q and r such that n = qm + r and 0 ≤ r < m when

n = −40, m = 7.
(b) Let a, b ∈ N and let q be the quotient and r the remainder on
dividing a by b. So a = qb + r where 0 ≤ r < b. Suppose that
r 6= 0. Find the quotient and the remainder obtained when −a is
divided by b.
(c) Find the binary (base 2) representation of 53.
(20 Marks)

3. (a) Let U be the proposition (P ∧ Q) ⇒ (P ∨ Q). Construct the truth

table for U and hence determine whether U is a tautology.
(b) Let V be the statement (∀m ∈ Z)[(∃n ∈ Z)(m > n2 )]. Write ¬V
without using “¬”. Prove that V is false.
(c) Let W be the statement (∀n ∈ Z)[(∃m ∈ Z)(m > n2 )]. Prove that
W is true.
(20 Marks)

4. Let the mapping f : [0, ∞) → R be given by f (x) = x2 + 6x + 5 .

(a) Prove that f is not surjective.

(b) Prove that f is injective.

(20 Marks)

5. (a) Write down the addition and multiplication tables for the ring Z4 .
(b) List all elements of Z4 that do not have an inverse.
(c) Give an example of elements a, x, y ∈ Z4 such that a 6= 0 and
ax = ay but x 6= y.
(d) Is Z4 a field? Is Z4 an integral domain? Justify your answers.
