Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The technology tool I selected for this lesson idea, BrainPOP video and game, will support all of my students.
This lesson idea follows the representation, action/expression, and engagement frameworks. The content is
being presented through multiple media forms, is allows students to choose different activities to complete
through the website, and the video and game component will keep the students engaged throughout the
lesson. On the video, there is an option to select closed captioning as it plays. Seeing the words as they are
spoken is a support that will specifically benefit my ELL students. There is also an option to pause the video if
needed. This option allows students to pause and record notes or pause and come back to the video if
needed. This is a benefit that only the technology component offers. Because this video and game is online, it
allows student to view and complete in school or at home which is beneficial to both the student and teacher.

Lesson idea implementation:
The BrainPOP video will introduce the historical figure, Martin Luther King Jr. The teacher will follow the video
with a book about MLK Jr.’s life. The teacher will then transition into a class discussion about King and The
Civil Rights Movement. From here, the teacher will pull up the game on the SMART board and call students up
individually to place the key events of King’s life in sequential order.

The teacher will then break the students up into groups and assign one important event of MLK Jr.’s life to
each group. The students in each group will work together to create a narrated PowerPoint on their assigned
event. Once the students have completed their narrated PowerPoint, they will present it to the class. A rubric
will be used to support the students as they create their narrated PowerPoints.
Reflective Practice:
This project could be extended by having my students create another narrated PowerPoint on an additional
Georgia historical figure. I could use the PowerPoints that my students create as an introduction to the
historical figure chosen as we address them in our standards.
