Cathy Grace Has Spent a Lifetime "Speaking for Children"

Autism Center of North Mississippi
We are very fortunate that the Autism Center of North
Mississippi has made Tupelo and Lee County its home. I
spent time with Brittany Cuevas, the Center’s executive
director, and learned about the many facets of the
program. I am now aware of families’ courage and
persistence as they seek the best services for their children
ruled eligible for the Center’s special services to address
behavioral issues, such as autism. Currently, the Center
has a waiting list of 450 children, some relegated to the
waiting list for years. We must support this program and
others like the Center’s, making it a priority at the state
level. With intervention services similar to those offered at
the Autism Center, children once considered a lifelong burden to their families and society
can become productive workers and contributing members to their communities.

National Mental Health Awareness Month

North Mississippi State Hospital
Did you know that in 2015, suicide was the second leading
cause of death among 10-14 year olds in Mississippi? With
the suicide rate climbing among young people, we must
recognize how lives can be saved, the travesty of lack of
state support and the need to become serious about
funding proven interventions.
May was National Mental Health Awareness Month. In my
attempts to learn more, I visited with Sommer Armstrong,
Public Relations Director, at North Mississippi State
Hospital and had an earlier visit with Dr. Paul Callens,
Director at North Mississippi State Hospital, to learn about
the services provided. After years of state budget cuts, the
Department of Mental Health is struggling to continue to offer high quality services. In 2019,
the Department of Mental Health requested a restoration of the state funding totaling
$3,116,446 to its budget for expansion of evidenced-based/best-practice services in the
community to extend community based care. The request was denied. Even in the midst of
budget cuts, North Mississippi State Hospital continues to offer a high quality of care for all of
its patients. This is due to a highly dedicated staff and a high level of fiscal management of
the present resources. We have to put Mississippians first and not lobbyists and/or out-of-
state companies.
