1. Are the knowledge and skills you acquired from the K to 12 Curriculum enough for you to

be hired in a certain job that is inclined with your strand?

As of now, I can say that I learned many things in my Senior High School journey. In

my own opinion, the skills and knowledge that I obtained from the K to 12 curricula is

enough to be hired in a certain job. I believe that doing the things inside, because for

me the skills and knowledge needed from this will continue expand as the time goes

by.

2. What are your experiences and learnings in the K to 12 curricula that are helpful for you to

become lifelong learner?

I have lots of experiences in my senior high school under the k to 12 curricula. These

experiences and learning are the ones who teach me to be an independent person

because the present curriculum aims to mold individual to learn and stand using their

own feet. I learned how to manage our business and experienced to be a call center

agent, all of these experiences are the products of this curricula which will be helpful

in my future job.
3. If you can suggest things to enhance the k to 12 curricula, what are those?

I suggest that k to 12 should focus on skills beneficial in the practical living, because I

observed that other schools are focusing on knowledge lead students lacking of skills

in the actual field of work.

II. Introduction

High quality education is a crucial need for productive development of a certain country.

In addition, it increases country’s percentage attaining global competitiveness. In the

administration of the former President Benigno Aquino III, a new educational system, the Republic

Act 10533 or the K to 12 curriculum signing into a law which alter today’s educational status. As

the education sectors reveals The newly educational system of the country aims to provide students

sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners and prepare graduates

for tertiary education, middle level skill development, employment and entrepreneurship. In the

present time, K to 12 curricula is still a controversy addressing by the higher government officials

due to identified issues in its implementation. Some people shares their own positive sympathy

regarding the controversy but many of them broadcast that this curriculum results a great negative

impact in the educational status of the students as well as its impact in the next generation. IJMRD

(2017:4(7): 141-147) states that different schools do not meet the standards, requirements and

facilities that Department of Education sets. As a result, it will be a slow learning process for the

students. Another problem specified by (Umil 2017) regarding this curriculum is the struggling

and increasing number of out of school youth due to added expenses for the additional 2 years in

high school. This means that present curriculum which is the k to 12 program which is the k to 12

program really has a huge contribution from this issue. (Ganlani 2018) mentioned “8 relatable
problems of k-12 students go through” this explains challenges for incoming SHS students which

she that the added 2 years in the primary education is somehow a problematic situation for the

students especially for the parents who are indeed responsible for their child’s education. In fact,

a survey conducted by Philippine Business for Education reveals that only one out of five

companies are willing to hire SHS graduate which means that one of the ultimate goals of k -12

program which is employability do no achieve as the result shows. With these issues identified, it

concludes that the introduction of this new curriculum to schools and other elements which gain

an effect regarding this, harvested many comments and even judging it to a negative way. For the

reason of a having a hidden range of information about the said curriculum. This study aims to

determine micro effect of the curriculum in the implementation of the curriculum.

III. Presentation of the Problems Experienced with the K to 12

Many netizens are showing their negative viewpoint regarding in the implementation of the k

to 12 curricula. In this section, we will find out some of their viewpoints which can be able to

determine the problems experienced with the curriculum. (Arquero 2018), claims that the first

issue which lead to newly educational system of the Philippines, a problem is the cost or financial

constraints of the additional two years of primary education. Furthermore, he states that not all

public schools can accommodate the different strands of the k to 12 which will become a hardship

for the students and parents to decide whether to enter Senior High School with mismatch skills in

the available strand or having no choice not to enter in the added 2 years. Based on journal by

Bulatlat by (Umil 2017), as of November 2016, DepEd data showed shortages that the agency is

yet to meet, 13,945 classrooms, 81,267 teachers, 235 million instructional and other learning

materials, 2.2 million seats for 2016 and 96,492 sets – each seat with 45 seats and teacher’s desk,

and 44,538 computer packages. This implies that the 161 k of learning materials has become a
burden not only to students but also to teachers. Umil added that, in the process of Bulatlat

interview that there are some problems regarding in the implementation of subjects under k-12

program. The subjects meant for Grade 12 was already given to grade 11 due to lack of hours, as

a result, students who wanted to transfer cannot have the same schedule alike in his co-grade levels

because each school has different subject offered. Aside from the issues mentioned, the ultimate

problem faced is the unpreparedness of government in many aspects implementing the k to 12

basic education program.

IV. Benefits of K to 12 Program

The implementation of the K to 12 Program serves as an upgrading educational system for

the Philippines. Some educational sectors view this curriculum as beneficial to attain productivity

and global competence in the country. Despite of the possibility of suspending this, government

remains firm saying that K to 12 offer opportunities for Filipino students and national economy.

The article entitled K+12Philippines year 2015 mentioned three practical benefits of schooling

under the curriculum’s educational cycle. (1) Preparedness for Tertiary learning; (2) Readiness to

join the workforce; (3) Skill competency in the global market. Furthermore, it reveals that the new

educational system of the Philippines is not only intended to benefit the student but claiming the

advantage in the party of parents. One of the mentioned benefits is that k to 12 program in public

school is affordable, due to subsidies given by government. The new program offers primary and

secondary education in public schools at no cost. In private schools, DepEd approves and regulates

tuition and other school fees. Aside from this, it gives students time to master basic academic skills

due to the added 2 years for primary education. In addition, it is designed to provide a holistic

education for all Filipino students. With these benefits, k to 12 curricula truly toward reaching

national growth and development.
