Synthesis Essay #2

With all the advancements in technology, many have come to believe that the use of

public libraries are fading away. Nevertheless, libraries provide usefulness to the community.

They provide a place to acquire new information that is not taught in schools, libraries provide a

hang out place, and a reliable source. The role that libraries should have in the future should still

be as prominent as it is now.

First and foremost when you think of a library, you think of books and information.

Libraries provide history, and books that can be used to further your knowledge. For example

many city libraries hold historical information about the city and what it was like in the past

years. Libraries such as St.Paul, have “mobile computer labs, visiting minority communities and

teaching digital literacy classes in spanish, homong, somali, and more.” (Source C). With this

information provided this shows that libraries hold information that can be used in centuries to

come. Some information is not stored digitally so in this case libraries save that information.

In addition libraries hold a safe place to hang out with others. People such as teens who

attend school, doctors, engineers can meet at the library to discuss things while hanging out,

possibly getting work done. In many cases different groups can meet at a library. In the mid-19th

century it was conducted as a “people's university”. (Source A). A library is considered a

“wholesome capable citizenry would be fully schooled in the conduct of a democratic life.”

(Source A). With this inserted it is understood that libraries hold a place for gathering around the

community. What this does for the future of libraries is, many can depend on a place to meet

without spending money to hold a meeting. In this era that is significant because a lot of places

charge to hold meetings or groups.

Lastly, but very important, libraries are a reliable place to access the internet and books.

With this era many can't afford the expenses of at home internet or computers. But they provide
a

way, “Twenty two precent of library computer users (14+) say the library is their only source for

computers and internet access.” (Source C). People with a disadvantage to these luxuries have

access to internet due to the libraries in their community. This also provides a place for those

without funds to be an artist, or volunteers. (Source B). Without libraries it would be hard for

many. Libraries in the future, hold a vital role. As time progresses things become more expensive

so this place allows those who have less to have a chance to acquire more.
