INTRODUCTION

Reading is a thinking process, it is a part of everything that happens to you as a

person and comprehending a text is intimately related to your life (Fountas & Pinnell,
2006, p. 7). Implementing an effective teaching learning process, enhancing the
comprehension skills of the learners can improve intellectual capacity of the learners.
According to Ontario Ministry of Education (2006), another major goal of literacy
instruction is to instill in students an appreciation of the value of reading. Thus, extracting
relevant and essential information from variety of text necessary for educational and
personal improvement of the learners will help the learners and our school becomes
globally competitive.

McBride (2004:78) noted that there can be up to a five-year difference in

maturation between any two average children in other words, everyone is unique. In
today’s generation, classrooms are defined by the diversity of the students. They are
grouped based on their culture and age. Thus, they all have different background,
knowledge and learning styles that can add to the responsibility of the teacher.

In different classroom scenarios students participate based on their own learning

styles and strategies. It is important to engage them in different activities that would
enhance their individual uniqueness and would strengthen their weaknesses. In our
country, teachers have difficulties in terms of teaching the students about English
language, it is important to learn English language because English has become the
Universal means of communication all over the world. It is the language of science,
globalization, commerce, trades, politics, history, education, media and technology Bhlool
(2013). Different strategies are used to teach English in our country, but we still have
difficulties in teaching it. We need to combine our methods and strategies to attain this
goal which is teaching English to students to gain comprehension. The best way to
achieve that goal is through differentiated instruction that takes into account Ell’s English
language proficiency (Takase, 2009).
English has four macro skills receptive like listening, reading and productive like
speaking and writing. Those macro skills have big roles in learning the English language.
Developing reading skills are one of the best ways in improving their understanding about
the language. Reading is the most important skill a child can develop to be successful in
school. Regardless of the subject matter taught, a child must be able to read and
comprehend what they are reading (Allan, 2011). Reading comprehension is the process
where the students comprehend what they are reading. That it why it is important to
enhance reading skills for the students to also enhance their comprehension skills.

Statement of the Problems

The objectives of this study are to identify the elements of the plot and enhance
the reading skills among Grade 10 students using SQ4R method.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the question:

1. What are the scores of the students in the experimental group and control group
in the stories:
a. Pandora’s Box
b. Radish and The Lady Leek Stem
c. The Story of an Hour
Interventions

To further enhance the reading skills of the Grade 10 students the following are
the steps that you need to follow:

1. The teacher should employ the SQ4R strategy.

2. First, the teacher should let the students conduct a SURVEY about the given
text.
3. Second, the students should create a QUESTION based on their survey
without reading the text yet. For example: Why is the text entitled Pandora’s
Box? Who is the main Character of the story?
4. Third, the teacher will let the students READ the story.
5. Fourth, the students will RECITE their answers on the questions they have
formulated before reading the story orally and in written.
6. Fifth, they should RELATE the story on their previous knowledge or into their
lives.
7. Lastly, the students should REVIEW their answers by re-reading the story.

Results to the Interventions

The research showed that using SQ4R strategy can improve the reading skills and
at the same time the comprehension level of the Grade 10 students in Panabo National
High School. The researcher conducted three reading session.

In the first conduction of the study, the students who are in the controlled group
got most of the correct answers in finding the elements of plot in the story entitled “The
Pandora’s Box”. While the students that belong to the experimental group got the least
number of correct. It is maybe because they were exposed to different strategies in
reading.

Conclusion

This study was conducted to enhance the reading skills of the grade 10 students
using SQ4R. This study evaluates the reading skills and comprehension level of the grade
10 in Panabo National High School and evaluates how effective is this strategy to improve
their comprehension skill.

The results showed that the reading skills and comprehension skills of the
learners in Grade 10 of Panabo National High school has improved during the 3 reading
sessions with the used of SQ4R. This implies that using the SQ4R strategy enable the
students to improve their reading skills and comprehension skills. It also helps the
students to appreciate more the literary text.

Poor comprehension skill hinders the learners to discover new things and to
appreciate and relate to the literary texts. Using SQ4R strategy enable the students to
unlock difficult words, ask questions and fully understand the given text which is why, to
enhance the capability of the learners to comprehend the text. It is important that the
students will have a prior knowledge before reading the text to fully understand the text.
Recommendations

Based on the results, the following recommendations are suggested.

1. The Department of Education should conduct different programs to improve

reading skills and comprehension skills of the learners.
2. The school should practice employing the SQ4R strategy in the lower grade up to
the higher grade to improve the reading skills and comprehension level of the
students.
3. Different studies should be conducted to cater the different reading strategies that
learners possessed.
