Q1.

Define the following:

1. Power: Power is defined as the rate at which work is performed.

2. Watt: Power used is one watt if work is done at the rate of one joule per
second.
3. Work: The work done by a force applied to a body is defined as the
product of the force and the displacement of the body in the direction of
the force.

Q2. Answer the following:

1. A man draws a bucket full of water from a well in 5 seconds and a boy does
the same work in 10 seconds. Whose power is greater and why?
Ans. Power is defined as the rater at which work is performed. As the boy and
man do an equal amount of work but man takes less time (i.e. 5 seconds) and
the boy takes more time (i.e. 10 seconds), therefore the power of man is more.

2. Show that the power is equal to the product of force and velocity (or)
Show the relationship between power and velocity.
Ans. Power is defined as the rate at which work is performed.
Power = Work
Time
P =W/T

But, work = Force x Displacement, Thus (W = F x S)

Now, P =FxS
T

But, S/T=V

Thus, P =FxV

Hence, Power is equal to the product of force and velocity.

3. What is the unit of power in SI system and CGS system? How are they related
to each other?
Ans. The SI unit of power is Watt i.e. Joule / Second.
The CGS unit of power is Erg / Second.
1 watt (w) = 107 Erg / Second
The industrial unit of power is horsepower.
1Horsepower (hp) = 746 Watts.
1 Kilowatt = 1000 Watts.
1 Megawatt = 106 Watts.

Q3. Give scientific reasons for the following.

1. Power is a scalar quantity.

Ans. 1. Power is defined as the rate at which work is performed.
2. Work done and time both are scalar quantities. Hence, power is a scalar
quantity.

2. A Road going up a steep hill is always winding and has a small slope.
Ans. 1. If a straight road from the bottom to the top of the hill were to be
constructed the time required would be less.
2. Only those vehicles which are capable of developing very high power would be
able to reach the top.
3. A road going up a steep hill is always winding and ha a small slope.
4. Though a longer time is required to reach the top even a vehicle capable of
developing low power will be able to reach the top. Hence, a road going up a
steep hill is always winding and has a small slope.

3. A rocked must have a very high driving power.

Ans. 1. Power is defined as the product of the force and velocity.
2. A rocked has to take off vertically to attain a high altitude within a short time.
Therefore, a rocked must have a very high driving power.

Q4. Distinguish between

Energy Power
1. The capacity of a body to 1. Power is the rate at which work
perform work is called as is performed.
energy. 2. The S.I unit of power is Joule/
2. The S.I unit of energy is Joule Seconds and C.G.S unit of
and C.G.S unit of energy is Erg. power is Erg/ Seconds.
