was benched in the fourth quarter of the team’s 37-25 loss
to the Lions on Sunday. As is custom with McNabb, a small
controversy is bubbling to the surface between the organi-
zation’s gunslinger and team’s Head Coach, Mike Shana-
han. Shanahan decided to pull McNabb with two minutes
to go in the game because he felt backup Rex Grossman
had a better grasp of the team’s two-minute offense. Then,
on Tuesday, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said
McNabb’s physical fitness played a factor in the switch.
McNabb took the high road when asked this week about
the unconventional move. “My team relies on me being
there. I want to be there for my team," McNabb said. "If I
can't walk, then I can't go. That's just the way I play, no mat-
ter if you're banged up or what, you've got to be in there."

Former star Merriman released by Chargers

Linebacker Shawne Merriman was placed on waiv-
ers by the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday. Merriman,
who had previously been on the injured reserve list be-
cause of a calf injury. The 26-year-old linebacker out of
Maryland was the 12th overall pick in the 2005 draft. Al-
though he was nicknamed “Lights Out” for his extremely
physical style of play, Merriman had only five tackles in
very limited play this season. In addition, his off-field
problems were well-documented, as he was suspended
for four games during the 2006 season after testing posi-
tive for steroids. He was also arrested in 2009 for a domes-
tic dispute involving television personality Tila Tequila.
