Mr. Graves

Gokul Rajaram

Result- PASS / DATE- 19 December 2017

- Started off with the ships i’ve sailed. instructions to me were very clear.

“No trick questions and don’t read into my question. , its gonna be a simple question
with a simple answer “

- I obliged and ,we started off with roles and responsibilities of a 2E

- I have one unit exhaust temp high, reasons ?

- what effect will it have on the long run in the engine ?

- Draw the Out of phase diagram for a normal injection

- show me TDC in the card

- Draw an out of phase card for a leaky injector

- card for an early ignition

- why is pressure increasing if fuel is injected early ?

- Why isn’t P max desirable ? isn’t that whats achieved in VIT ?

- so in VIT u want to achieve P max, but why not now ?

- Exhaust gas boiler draw a diagram and explain the water flow

- 12 am, ur junior calls you saying circulating pumps are not working whats ur
immediate action ?

- i said start another pump ( he said : other pump is also not working)

- then i said, there s an exhaust gas bypass , bypassing the EGB (he said, in your
ship that s not provided )

- then i said, i wil immediately ask the bridge to slow the engine down and eventually
stop (hoping its navigationally safe to do so)

once engine stopped, isolate the circulating pump and shut the lines

Drain the complete EGB and remove safey valve

open EGB, clean it off the soot

Start the engine and run at reduced load , ensure the exhaust temperature doesn’t
go beyond 300 degrees.

- So , u mentioned, you will inspect EGB , what are all the dangers of going in.

(I started off with less o2, high HC fumes, high C02, CO etc)

he asked , is that it ?

then i said about particulate matter (fine form of ash , that can be inhaled and can
cause pulmonary diseases - he seemed happy with the answer)

- He said, if the circulating pumps stop, wouldn’t the water drain into the boiler ,
because the pressure is 12 bar in the EGB and only 7 bar in the boiler (answer is no,
it wouldn’t drain, if the water enters the EGB from below and all the more the
discharge valve of the circulating pump is a non return valve)

- difference between the safety valve of the EGB and safety valve on a boiler (EGB its
hydraulic , boiler - its steam - he was happy with this answer)

- When does EGB safety valve come in use ? or why is it given in the first place ?

(answer : when you overhaul or isolate EGB for maintenance, and when you forget to
open the valves and when the main engine is started , then it comes in use)

- Turbocharger construction , and take me through the path of scavenge air from
engine room.

- why volute casing is given ?

- whats the problem of having water mist in your scavenge air ?

- why lubricating cross head bearing is difficult ?

- During overloading of a cylinder , which bearing u think is heavily stressed ? and why
(Cross head bearing )
