Chapter 1

1 Introduction
This course is designed for TRIBON PIPE users wishing to produce Isometric drawings with the ISOGEN product. It is
directed towards personnel responsible for system administration but will be useful for all those involved in the use of
Tribon Pipe modelling.

The course is NOT aimed at existing ISOGEN users who want to learn more about ISOGEN.

1.1 Aims/Objectives
Aim:

To familiarise current Tribon users with the mechanism Tribon Pipe uses to produce Isometric drawings via ISOGEN.
And enable them to produce those Isometrics.

Objectives:

To have a clear understanding of the Tribon - ISOGEN interface.

To be familiar with the files associated with the Tribon - ISOGEN interface.
To be able to create and manipulate the files used to control the output from Tribon.
To produce Isometrics from Tribon Pipes using I-Run.

1.2 Prerequisites
The participants of this course must have a good knowledge of Tribon Pipe modelling and components.

The training PC’s should be equipped with: -

ISOGEN installation including I-Run

DXF viewer
Tribon installation including Pipe Modelling

1.3 Training methods

Training will consist of presentations, with some demonstrations on a workstation. There will then follow practical
exercises for the trainees to complete.

5
1.4 Overview
TRIBON Pipe modelling allows the detailed 3D modelling of pipes and pipe spools. Production information for assembly
and manufacture is produced automatically by Pipe modelling and the interface to ISOGEN can be used to extract
information from the 3D model to produce Isometric drawings also suitable for fabrication and installation.

The drawing that ISOGEN produces is made up of a number of predefined symbols used to represent the various
components as modelled in TRIBON pipe modelling. These symbols are manually assigned to the relevant components
in Tribon thus allowing some control of the produced Isometric.

There are two commonly used interfaces to ISOGEN: I-Serve & I-Run

1.4.1 I-Serve
The link between Tribon Pipe and ISOGEN is the idf file. This file is created by Tribon Pipe Splitting and stored in a
directory in the file system. The I-Serve product runs as a Service on the computer and monitors this directory. At a
predefined interval I-Serve starts ISOGEN which creates one ISO drawing for each idf file written.

6
1.4.2 I-Run
I-Run allows isometrics to be processed off-line, as and when required. I-Run has the following features:

User interface to select data files interactively.

Uses the Alias Project Manager application for control of isometric styles (ISOGEN input/output controls, backing
sheet etc).
Built-in viewer for output drawings and message files.
Modular architecture allowing features to be turned on and off.
User interface for drawing generation using Personal ISOGEN.

I-Run is used extensively in this training guide

2 Setting up the Tribon to ISOGEN Link

2.1 ISOGEN Set-up

This Chapter deals with the set-up required in ISOGEN in order to prepare a project area for the Isometric drawings.

Start the ISOGEN Project Manager, contained within the ISOGEN installation.

The Project Manager is also commonly known as 'PipMan'

Project Manager is designed to allow easy creation and manipulation of Projects by performing the following tasks.

The user can:

Set up Isometric Directory structures to store project files.

Define multiple different Projects and switch between them.
Set up defaults for a Project.
Copy styles from a set of template Isometric Styles.
Edit an Isometric Style to meet company standards.

9
2.1.1 Projects
There are three important definitions:

Isometric Directory
Project
Isometric Style

The Isometric Directory is the root directory, which will contain one or more sets of Project files. In many cases there will
be only one Isometric Directory on a particular system. However, the Project Manager allows you to create multiple
Isometric Directories.

Note. Nested Isometric Directories are not allowed.

In an Isometric Directory you may create multiple Projects. A Project is represented by a directory structure. In this
directory structure you will find files, which define the available formats of isometrics and the outputs (the detailed
isometric drawings and message files reports etc), which ISOGEN creates. The Project Manager's default project (the
one that is current when you close the Project Manager) is used by I-Sketch to determine the location of output files.

Each Project can contain one or more Isometric Styles. An Isometric Style is defined by a set of ISOGEN configuration
files, which specify to ISOGEN the format of the drawing (including the required format of the output drawing). A simple
example of the capability to customise ISOGEN is the use of a user defined backing sheet.

In short, an Isometric Style is the property of a Project and a Project can only reside within an Isometric Directory.

2.1.2 Creating a New Isometric Directory

10
2.1.3 Creating a New Project

Type in the name of the Project, the Description and select the Template Styles and Output Formats required.

The different Template Styles are described in Appendix 2

For the purpose of this training select all Template Style

formats (using SHIFT key and CURSOR) and DXF as the
Output format

By clicking on a Style it is possible to change some of the attributes.

For details of how to customise ISOGEN

see the ISOGEN user guide or contact
the Alias Technical support department
at Technical Support

The ISOGEN system is now ready to accept isometrics created by the Tribon training project. Before doing this we must
consider some settings that are required within the Tribon system.

11
2.2 Tribon Set-up

2.2.1 Variable Names

The following logical names needs to be defined to run the link:

SBP_ISO_PROJ_DIR Shall be assigned to the directory where the ISOGEN projects are stored. For
example "c:\Isometrics\". This directory is selected during setup of ISOGEN and
can be changed using the ISOGEN Project Manager found in the start menu.

SBP_ISO_PROJ Shall be assigned to the ISOGEN project that shall be used, for example "TTP".
ISOGEN projects are created using the ISOGEN Project Manager found in the start
menu.
SBP_ISO_STYLE Shall be assigned to the ISOGEN project style that shall be used, for example "Final-
Fab". ISOGEN project styles are created using the ISOGEN Project Manager found
in the start menu.
SBP_ISO_I_SERVE_INPUT_DIR The directory used for transfer of idf files between ISOGEN and Tribon. For example
"C:\Temp". This directory is selected during setup of ISOGEN and can be changed
using "I-Serve" program accessible from the control panel.
SBP_ISO_SYMB The symbol translation file.

When the link is run ISOGEN will create log messages, drawings, material lists etc. in the directory specified by the
setup above and your ISOGEN project.

For example if:

SBP_ISO_PROJ_DIR=C:\Isometrics
SBP_ISO_PROJ=TTP
SBP_ISO_STYLE=Final-Fab

Then the log files (called messages in ISOGEN) will end up in the directory
C:\Isometrics\TTP\Final-Fab\Messages,

the created drawings will end up in the directory

C:\Isometrics\TTP\Final-Fab\drawings,

reports (mtrl lists etc.) will end up in

C:\Isometrics\TTP\Final-Fab\reports.

Note: The I-Serve service writes messages to i-serve.log in the temp directory. This could normally be disregarded but
may be of some help if no or wrong output is created.

12
2.2.2 Controlling the output
Most of the outputs from ISOGEN (drawings, material lists, reports etc.) are controlled by ISOGEN options that can be
set using the ISOGEN Options editor. However a few options needs to be handled by Tribon because they have impact
on what data Tribon sends to ISOGEN when processing a pipe. These options are:

2.2.3 Settings
SBP_ISO_USE_CMPNAME This logical name shall be set if component names should be used in the material
table. Otherwise material number will be used.
SBP_ISO_CONNTO_ASSEMBLY This logical name shall be set if the "continues on" information on the ISOGEN
drawing should be assembly belonging. If this is not set it will be pipe name.

2.2.4 ISOGEN (idf) records

Information is sent to ISOGEN in an idf file that has a record based format. The user can freely position the records
listed below on the ISOGEN drawing. See ISOGEN documentation for details about how to position the records.

-6 Pipeline Reference (assembly, pipe or pipe spool name depending on input to pipe splitting)
-9 Project Identifier
-10 Plant Area (module)
-14 Processing Date
-16 Total weight
-17 Bending radius factor (for compatibility)
-23 Bending radius factor
-601 Tribon subsystem ( <system><line number> )

13
2.2.5 Symbol XSXTranslation File
The logical name for the symbol translation file is SBP_ISO_SYMB. This file must exist before generating isometric
pipe drawing. The file contains a translation table between symbol numbers and the symbol identities used in ISOGEN.

Before generating iso's it is necessary to store symbol numbers in component database. Symbol numbers for iso's are
stored with usage code 5. The range for the symbol numbers is from 1 to 800. The file is an ordinary text file and
contains the connection between symbol number and ISOGEN symbol name. One line must contain both the symbol
number and the ISOGEN symbol name. The order of the symbol numbers is irrelevant. Comments start with an
exclamation mark (!). Space characters are not significant.

See ISOGEN manual for details about ISOGEN symbols.

The format of the symbol translation file is:
! ! Comments ! <symbol number> = <ISOGEN symbol name> ! Comment

!
! Example of iso-symbol translation table.
!
! symbno = ISOGEN symbol
!
001 = FLBL ! Flange - blind
002 = FLFL ! Flange - flared/loose backing
003 = FLLB ! Flange - loose backing
004 = FLRC ! Flange - reducing concentric
005 = FLRE ! Flange - reducing eccentric
006 = FLSC ! Flange - screwed
007 = FLSO ! Flange - slip on
008 = FLSJ ! Flange - slip on with J type weld
009 = FOSO ! Flange - orifice slip on
010 = FLSW ! Flange - socket weld

See Appendix 1 for further examples

Only the corresponding symbols can be assigned to a component, i.e. if a flange symbol is assigned to a valve, the
Isometric will be missing a symbol. ISOGEN will replace missing symbols with default shapes, usually a rectangle.

Symbol numbers for ISOGEN are stored with usage code 5. The range for the symbol numbers is from 1 to 800. The
font number is irrelevant.

14
Example:

TRIBON component: PFSODIN2501PN16-50 slip on flange.

ISOGEN symbol identity: FLSO (Flange - slip on)

Symbol translation file: -

004 = FLRC ! Flange - reducing concentric

005 = FLRE ! Flange - reducing eccentric
006 = FLSC ! Flange - screwed
007 = FLSO ! Flange - slip on

2.2.6 ISOGEN Symbols

When ISOGEN symbols are used for Tribon components, it is important to know that each type of ISOGEN symbol may
be used only for certain Tribon Component type codes.

The Tribon Component type codes are described in the Tribon User's Guide, Tribon M3 Outfitting,
Components, Component Type Codes.

Chapter 3

3 Generating Isometrics
Now we will look at how isometric drawings are generated.

3.1 Generating the IDF file

We will take a pipeline from the isogen sub-project. Ready the pipe then split it using an input file similar to that below
containing the /ISO keyword.

PROJ,'TTP';
SPLIT/PLOT/MOD='101'/SUBS='XX018'/ISO;

1 PROJ,'TTP';
2 SPLIT/PLOT/MOD='101'/SUBS='XX018'/ISO;
%SP600-S-ISO, An isometric pipe sketch \TTP-101-XX018\ will be made.
%SP600-S-PIPESPLIT, Pipe \101-XX018\ successfully split.
1 PROJ ,'TTP';
2 ISO /SUB=('XX018')/MOD='101';
%SP920-W-NOSYMBOL, Symbol for component PTEE-200X40-3 is not defined
%SP920-W-NOTFINISHED, Not completed pipe TTP-101-XX018

You will find that one of the components (PTEE-200X40-3) gives an error message like the one highlighted above.

This means that the component does not have a reference to an ISOGEN symbol. In this case the component is
considered as a “Tee butt weld”, TEBW, symbol number 300 in the file isosymb.dat.

300 = TEBW

In tbcomp, open the component and type in the relevant symbol information. Then try splitting the pipe once again: -

1 PROJ,'TTP';
2 SPLIT/PLOT/MOD='101'/SUBS='XX018'/ISO;
%SP600-S-ISO, An isometric pipe sketch \TTP-101-XX018\ will be made.
%SP600-S-PIPESPLIT, Pipe \101-XX018\ successfully split.
1 PROJ ,'TTP';
2 ISO /SUB=('XX018')/MOD='101';
%SP920-S-FINISHEDOK, IDF for pipe TTP-101-XX018 successfully created.

You should find that the error has gone.

17
3.2 Running the I-Run application
Click on the I-Run icon

Select File > Open

The system will open in the directory where the IDF files are stored.

Choose the IDF file TTP-101-XX018.idf and click Add

Alternatively, you can browse to the position of the files. You can use Add All if there are a number of files to be
processed in the folder.

18
Click OK

In the main I-Run window you then get a preview of the pipe.

Isometric View Orientation is shown by the North Arrow box. Clicking in one of the quadrants of this box will point the
North Arrow in that direction. The view of the piping system will then be updated.

19
3.3 Pipe Inspection Mode
Right-click in the I-Run window and select Pipe Inspection Mode

Click on one of the components and the Component Information window opens, showing information about the
current component.

See the I-Run on-line help for further details

20
3.4 Generating the Drawing
To create a drawing select Generate Drawing using ISOGEN

Select the Style Final-Fab and press OK. When the run completes choose View Last Drawing.

The drawing will open (assuming you have associated a program with the DXF file type). The file is stored in the
ISOGEN project directory

21
3.5 View Drawing
Alternatively, you can use View Drawing to browse and choose the drawing you wish to open.

Chapter 4

4 Examples of Pipe Splitting

As we have seen, the link to ISOGEN is part of the pipe splitting process. There are 2 ways of running this link:

Immediately after the pipe is split into spools.

Without prior splitting. The link is run using the `Splitting background' command in interactive pipe modelling for both
the above cases but the format of the input differs.

For case 1 the /ISO keyword shall be added to the SPLIT statement in the pipe splitting input file. For case 2 a separate
ISO statement must be used.

4.1 Splitting input file

PROJ,'TTP';
SPLIT /SUB=('WW130') /MOD='101';
SPLIT /SUB=('WW130') /MOD='101' /ISO;
SPLIT /SUB=('WW130') /MOD='101' /SKETCH='B';
ISO /SUB=('WW131') /MOD='101';
ISO /SUB=('WW132') /MOD='101';

4.2 Isometric drawing, input file:

PROJ,'TTP';
ISO /SUB=('WW130') /MOD='101';
ISO /SUB=('WW131') /MOD='101';
ISO /SUB=('WW132') /MOD='101';

4.3 Isometric drawing by assembly

It is possible to create IDF’s by assembly. The pipelines are collected to an assembly using Tribon Assembly Planning
and the assembly keyword is used in the pipe splitting input file.

PROJ,'TTP';
!ISO/MOD='433'/SUBS='DLG001';
ISO/ASSEMBLY_FILE='c:\projects\ttp\dat\ass_inp.dat';

The input file “ass_inp.dat” contains the name(s) of the assembly(s) to be processed in the form 8324-S1-T2 etc.

23
4.4 Example of creating multiple isometrics in I-Run

Select Open File and use Add All to collect all IDF files in the folder.

Then use Generate All Drawings using ISOGEN to process all the IDF files

24
Chapter 5

5 Exercise 1, Creation of Isometrics

For some of the pipes contained in the ISOGEN sub-project, create IDF files for ISOGEN and generate the DXF files.
We will use the Spool Style as below, but try using some other styles as well.

25
You will notice that for some pipes there are two drawings produced. ISOGEN does this automatically when it cannot fit
all the data onto a single drawing. The Spool style contains more data than some other formats.
