NPTEL – National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning

National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning was initiated by seven institutes of

technology along with Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 2003.
Five core disciplines were identified:
 Civil engineering
 Computer science and engineering
 Electrical engineering
 Communication engineering
 Mechanical engineering
235 courses in wed/video format developed.
Process of certification
 Subject Matter Experts (SME) create recorded video content for courses.
 The courses uploaded on portal and opened for enrollments which is free.
 Every week about three hours of video content is released along with an assignment
which is evaluated and provides the student with a score.
 Teaching Assistants (TA’s) and faculty members support the discussion forum.
 If someone wants to get a certificate from IIT/IISc after doing the course he/she
should register for the in-person proctored certification exam. There is a nominal fee
of Rs. 1000
 A learned will pass and be certified only if average assignment score (out of 100)
>=40 and final exam score (out of 100) >= 40

Advantages of Online Educational Courses

 Flexibility: It gives convenience of completing their classes at any time of day or

night, even if they have 20-30 available any particular day.
 Reduced Costs: People wanting to progress through the company and become top
leaders and managers can enroll in online education courses that they complete while
they are still in their jobs, therefore they don’t have to worry about lost income. In
addition, people don’t have to front the financial costs that come with attending
universities on campus.
 More Effective Learning: Employees can learn at their own pace, rather than being
rushed to keep up with tutors or classmates. If some information is missed or not
clear, it is easy for employees to replay the videos or re-read details.
 Time Saving: Rather than needing to get a whole group of people together at the one
time, employees cam simply complete training whenever they have time during their
work day.
 Documentation: All the information that you will need will be safely stored in an
online data base, including things like live discussion documents, training materials
and emails
 Timely feedback: Employees are able to get real time feedback during an online
training course. And because everything is connected online, management can also
get up to date analysis on how courses are performing, and they track the progress of
individual employees.
 Improves retention: Online training courses make use of videos, interactive slides
and even games to create a fun and engaging course. These courses lead to better
results by helping employees retain more of the information learned.

Disadvantages

 Less interaction: Face to face interaction cannot be done all the time as employees
might prefer to learn during their free time – which is usually outside the working
hours.
 Demotivation: Employees’ tendency to underestimate the impact of not meeting their
instructor directly will lead to monologue learning which will eventually lead to
demotivation of employees.
 Lack of control: Employees with low motivation tends to fall behind because there is
no specific allocation of time for learning process, and there is lack of routine and
fixed schedule.
 Isolated: As the employees do remote online training, instructor cannot answer
questions directly. Online learning often doesn’t allow the instructor to answer bunch
of questions at the same time outside the working hours, while many employees might
prefer to learn after they get home.
