Lesson Plan

Learning Area: English Topic: Persuasive speech introductions.


Curriculum content description: Listen to spoken texts constructed for different purposes, for example
to entertain and to persuade, and analyse how language features of these texts position listeners to respond in
particular ways (ACELY1740).
Understand that authors innovate with text structures and language for specific purposes and
effects (ACELA1553).
Use interaction skills to present and discuss an idea and to influence and engage an audience by selecting
persuasive language, varying voice tone, pitch, and pace, and using elements such as music and sound
effects (ACELY1811).
Students’ prior knowledge and experience:
We have watched persuasive speeches and analysed them
We have gone through persuasive techniques
Students have researched their chosen social issue and begun planning their speech.

Learning purpose: To begin writing their introductions using effective persuasive techniques and the
research they have on their chosen social issue.

Timing: Learning Experiences:

Introduction:
In and reading for 15 minutes. Ask the class to take out their booklets and have them
17 mins
on their desks for me to check while they are reading.

CHECK HOMEWORK- students were asked to complete the planning page of their
assessment book. Go around during silent reading time.

10 mins Structure of introductions and how to make them effective.


- Canva presentation.
- Make sure students are writing down the points from the presentation into
their English notebooks. Give them time to do this.
- Give them an example

15 mins
Begin writing the introductions for their speech using the beginnings of their planning
from last lesson.
- Think of effective persuasive techniques to use in an introduction.
- Those who finish early can begin looking at body paragraphs. Write the topic
sentence and dot point their responses for the next lesson.

If there is time, students will start working on their body paragraphs.

Management of behaviour:
Low key strategies such as proximity and eye contact throughout the lesson.
Calling on students by name.
I will also be sure to remind the louder students to be respectful of their classmates
and try and select quieter students for their input.
Move students if they are being too loud or disruptive.

Lesson conclusion:
5-10 mins
Select some students to read out their introductions.

Lesson Evaluation:
As expected, most students didn’t complete their research at home, however, we moved on with
introductions. They were relatively engaged with their work, and for the most part, with an exception or two
who I moved. It was a good lesson with a balance of talking and written work. Most students have developed
some semblance of an introduction. There was some confusion about what a thesis statement was, so I
clarified it, along with my mentor to ensure their understanding and then at the end of the lesson, I reiterated
them with the class. Students read out their introductions, or what they had produced, and were asked to
identify
