A simplified homa vidhAna

Invocation to gaNapati

One remembers vinAyaka with His wives siddhi and buddhi and prays thus.

shuklAmbaradharam viShNum shashivarNam chaturbhujam|


prasannavadanam dhyAyet sarvavighnopashAntaye||
agajAnanapadmArkam gajAnanamaharnisham|
anekadaMtam bhaktAnAm ekadantam upAsmahe||
vakratuNDamahAkAya sUryakoTisamaprabha|
nirvighnam kuru me deva sarva kAryeshu sarvada||
Achamanam

With water from the pa~nchapAtra,it is sipped with the following mantras recited.
achyutAya namaH| anantAya namaH| govindAya namaH|
After this,some akShata-s are taken and smelt,and the following statement uttered
uttiShtantu bhUta pishAcha ete bhUmi bhArakaH| yeteShAm avirodhena brahmakarma samArambhe||

prANAyAma

Done with ‘OM bhuH|OM bhuvaH|...brahmabhurbhuvasuvarOM’

sa~Nkalpa

OM mamopAtta samasta dUritakShayadvArA shrI parameshvara prItyartham shrI <amuka devatA>


prasAda siddhyartham adya shubhadine shri shubhadina shubhamuhurte shrI <amuka devatA>
homakarmam yathAshakti kariShye|

kalasha shuddhi

After akShatas are sprinkled in the kalasha, recite ‘vaM’ 11 times and then display the dhenu mudra on
the kalasha and utter
ga~Nge cha yamune cha godAvari sarasvatI narmade sindhu kAverI jale’smin sannidhiM kuru|
Otherwise one can do punyAhavAchanam,pavamAna sukta,etc.

pujA to the kuNDa

Some water is taken from the kalasha and offered into the kuNDa while reciting the mUla mantra.
Kumkum is spread around the kuNDa(and sandalwood powder if available). AkShatas are then offered
into the kuNDa reciting <amuka devatA> homa kuNDAya namaH,and namaskAra mudra offered to the
homa kuNDa.
kuNDa mekhalA pujA

akShatas are now offered in the following points just outside the homa kuNDa,with the following name
associated with the respective number
1.(East)agnaye namaH
2.hutAvahAya namaH
3.(South)hutAshine namaH
4.kR^iShNavarmaNe namaH
5.(West)devamukhAya namaH
6.saptajihvAya namaH
7.(North)vaishvAnarAya namaH
8.jAtavedase namaH
agni pITha pUjA

akShatas are now offered in the following points just inside the homa kuNDa,with the following name
associated with the respective number

1. OM pItAyai namaH
2. OM shvetAyai namaH
3. OM aruNAyai namaH
4. OM kR^iShNAyai namaH
5. OM dhumrAyai namaH
6. OM tIvrAyai namaH
7. OM visphuli~Nginyai namaH
8. OM ruchirAyai namaH
9. OM jvAlinyai namaH
10. OM ram sarvashakti kamalAsanAya namaH
agnyAsana pUjA

Now,meditate upon agni thus:

sapta hastaH chatuH shrR A i~NgaH sapta jihvo dvi shlrShakaH|


svAhAM tu daxiNe pArshve devIM vAme svadhAM tathA |
bibhrat.h daxiNa hastaistu shaktimannaM sruchaM sruvaM ||
tAmaraM vyajanaM vAmaiH ghR^itapAtraM cha dhArayan.h |
meShArDho jaTAbaddho gauravarNo mahau jasaH ||
dhrUmra dhvajo lohitAxaH saptArchiH sarvakAmadaH |
AtmA bhimukha mAsInaH evaM rUpo hutAshanaH ||
And mentally offer Him and his wives a seat(Asana),and utter the mantra: raM vahnyAsanAya namaH|

Invoking agni

The kuNDa is now lit up with camphor,with wood/cowdung cakes/etc around it and one visualizes agni
in the flames reciting OM(X8) vaM(x3) raM(x7) raM vahnimUrtaye namaH|
agni kravyAda is discarded thus: A burning stick/piece is picked up from the fire,and thrown away in
the South West corner of the kuNDa reciting hruM phaT kravyAdebhyo svAhA|

One then recites:chit-pi~Ngala hana hana daha daha pacha pacha sarvaj~nAj~nApaya svAhA| offers
his namaskAra to agni and recites:
agnim prajvalitam vande jAtavedam hutAshanam|
suvarNavarNamamalam samiddham vishvatomukham||

pa~nchopAchAra pUjA to agni

1. gandha offered with laM pR^ithvitattvAtmikAya namaH|gandham dhArayAmi


2. puShpa offered with haM AkAshatattvAtmikAya namaH| puShpam samarpayAmi
3. dhUpa offered with yaM vAyutattvAtmikAya namaH|dhUpam samarpayAmi
4. dIpam offered with raM tejastattvAtmikAya namaH|dIpam darshayAmi
5. naivedyam offered with aM amR^ritatattvAtmikAya namaH|naivedyam samarpayAmi
6. akShatas offered with saM sarvAtmane namaH|sarvopachArAn samarpayAmi

Initial offerings to agni

Darbhas are taken from the ghR^itapAtra and placed as shown below.

Then ghee from the following locations in the pAtra is taken and offered with the following mantras

1. OM agnaye svAhA|namaH|
2. OM somAya svAhA|
3. OM agnisomAbhyAm svAhA|namaH
4. OM agnaye sviShTakR^ite svAhA|
5. OM bhuH svAhA|
6. OM bhuvaH svAhA|
7. OM suvaH svAhA|
8. OM bhurbhuvassuvaH svAhA|

Ghee is then taken from the middle and offered thrice with the mantra: OM vaishvAnaro jAtaveda
ihAvaha lohitAkSha sarvakarmANi sAdhaya svAhA|
The following are then offered to agni with Ahutis

OM agnijihvAbhyaH svAhA| OM jihvadevatAbhyaH svAhA|OM dikpAlebhyaH svAhA|OM


keshavAdichaturviMshatimUrtibhyaH svAhA|
Then 4 Ahutis are taken up with the sruva,placed in the sruc,the sruc covered with the sruva and finally
offered to agni uttering: OM vaishvAnaro jAtaveda ihAvaha lohitAkSha sarvakarmANi sAdhaya
vauShaT|

Initial invocation of gaNapati

The vashamAnaya mantra is offered dashakhaNDi with Ahutis in the following manner

OM svAhA|
OM shrIM svAhA|
OM shrIM hrIM svAhA|
OM shrIM hrIM klIM svAhA|
OM shrIM hriM klIM glauM svAhA|
OM shrIM hriM klIM glauM gaM svAhA|
OM shrIM hriM klIM glauM gaM gaNapataye svAhA|
OM shrIM hriM klIM glauM gaM gaNapataye varavarada svAhA|
OM shrIM hriM klIM glauM gaM gaNapataye varavarada sarvajanam me svAhA|
OM shrIM hriM klIM glauM gaM gaNapataye varavarada sarvajanam me vashamAnaya svAhA|

The entire mantra is then offered 4 times more.

Invoking the main deity

Asana is mentally offered reciting <amuka devatA> yogapIThAya svAhA|

The devatA is visualized in the dhyAna shloka in the space of one’s heart,then visualized as enterting
through ones’ prANa ,which is placed on a flower(by exhaling on it) and offered into agni(and the
devatA visualized as being in agni from then on).
The mUla mantra+svAhA is then recited 25 times and 11 times,and now the devatA and agni is
considered as one. Then oblations are offered wtih OM mUlamantrasyA~NgadevatAbhyaH svAhA|
AvaraNadevatAbhyaH svAhA|

pa~nchopAchAra pUjA to the deity+main Ahutis

Done as for agni.


After this,Ahutis are done for the main deity and the terminal Ahuti should end with vauShaT instead
of svAhA

uttarA~Nganam

Offer Ahutis thus


1. OM bhuH agnaye cha pR^ithivyai cha mahate cha svAhA|
2. OM bhuvaH vAyave cha antarIkShAya cha mahate cha svAhA|
3. OM suvaH AdityA cha dive cha mahate cha svAhA|
4. OM bhurbhuvassuvaH chandramase cha nakShatrebhyashcha digbhyashcha svAhA|

Then brahmArpaNam(an Ahuti is offered with)


OM tatsat itaH pUrvam prANa buddhi deha dharmAdhikAra jAgrat svapna sushuptAvasthAnumanasA
vAchA karmaNA yat smR^itam yaduktam yaccha kR^itam tat sarvam brahmArpaNam bhavet bhuH
svAhA|
Then pUrNAhuti
On reciting <amuka devatA> prItyartham homa paripUrNatA siddhyartham pUrNAhutim juhomi,ghee
is taken 12 times into the sruc,and the resultant ghee is offered into agni with the mUla
mantra+vauShaT. This is an excellent time to meditate on the devatA of the mantra.
Then samarpaNam
One mentally then offers the phala of the homa by mentally thinking sarvam
shrI<homadevatA>arpanamastu
uddvAsanam

Now the mantradevatA+vinAyaka+agni are offered obeisances to mentally and are withdrawn back
into the space of the ritualists’ heart and then water sprinkled on the glowing embers uttering OM agne
tvam samudram gaccha|OM pR^ithvitvaM shItalA bhava| and bhasmadhArana ideally done.
