Assignment Brief: Stage 2 Reflective Report

We want you to make the most of your time at university and reach your full potential. As part of that
process, throughout your time here we want you to reflect on how you are doing with your academic work
and any other activities that you are participating in at university. Maybe you are finding the course harder
than you thought. Maybe you feel you are on the wrong course. Maybe everything is fantastic and you love
your course and you want to find ways to develop your skills and experiences to appeal to employers for
placement and internships. Maybe you are struggling to balance university work with other commitments.
Maybe you would love to enhance your university experience by going abroad. Maybe you realise you have
got lost in party land and your attendance is falling a little by the way side. Maybe you are an International
Student and feeling a bit lost being so far from home?

Whatever your situation. by reflecting on where you are and identifying things you need to work on or find out
or need support with, we hope that you will be able to really enhance your time at University and achieve your
very best. We ask our students to reflect on and plan every year they are with us to prepare you for the
ongoing professional development you will encounter in the work place.

Therefore, you are required to submit a 1,500 word report (excluding the action plan) reflecting on your
experiences as a first year student with us to date and from reflecting on those experiences create an Action
Plan of things you need to focus on for the rest of the first year going into the second year.

As you may not be used to writing reports, there is a pro-forma for the report with sections that you need to
complete. We also require you to use a reflective model (we give you an example of this in the pro-forma) to
structure that. You will also need to complete the table in the pro-forma showing how you have done in
modules so far and what your attendance is like. Finally, once you have completed the report, you need to
complete the Action Plan with the actions you have decided are most appropriate for you going forward based
on what you have reflected on. On the next page is a guide to completing the sections of the report.

Examples of Reflective Frameworks to use in the report

Refer to your Reflective Writing Pocket Study Skills Guide. In particular read Chapters 15 and 16 of the
Reflective Guide pp 79-102. These chapters give examples of reflective frameworks you can use, these are;

1) Rolfe et al 2001: What? So what? Now what? framework

2) Schoen 1983: Reflection before during and after action
3) Kolb 1984: Experiential Learning
4) Honey and Mumford 1986: The Learning Cycle
5) Gibbs 1988: Adapted Experiential Learning Cycle (shown in Chapter 16 being applied)

You can choose any of these reflective frameworks, but in order to pass the report you must make sure you
embed them into your report as shown in Chapter 16 which uses Gibbs’ Experiential Learning Cycle as an
example. You do not have to use Gibbs, but you must clearly show you are going through the steps of
whichever framework you choose in your writing.
The guide also gives some excellent tips on how to write reflectively and the type of language to use so don’t
limit yourself to chapters 15 and 16. Make sure you reference the guide at the end of the report as well as any
other sources you use. If you need help with Harvard referencing then have a look at the Academic Skills page
on NOW or contact the library/book yourself into one of their referencing sessions. Remember all these
activities whether online learning or face to face in a work shop count towards your study skills CPD and
referencing is an essential skill you will need throughout your time at university.

Module Table: You need to complete the table at the beginning of your report with names of your modules,
feedback and marks received to date and an estimate of your attendance at seminars and lectures for that
module for the year to date

1.0 Introduction: The introduction should tell the reader what you are going to tell them in the report
including any theory you will use

2.0 Reflections on first term at University: Academic Work: Using the information you have filled in the table
about your modules, reflect on how you are doing at university. Are you happy with your grades and
attendance? Is there anything that went really well, or things you think you need to change?

3.0 Reflections on first term at University: Adjusting to University Life: What have been the most difficult
challenges for you as a student starting university. Is this the first time you are living away from home. Maybe
you have a job or children and you have to juggle these commitments alongside university work. Maybe you
are an International Student and you are facing challenges around language and being far from home. How are
you managing your time and social life?

4.0 Reflections on first term at University: Engagement with PPD and extra-curricular activities

How did you score yourself in the skills audit in Term 1? What development points did you identify? Have you
managed to get involved in anything at university beyond your course? How is your CPD developing – are
there areas you need to get more hours in? Have you met up with your Academic Mentor in one to ones and
has that helped you access additional support. Are you interested in internships or placements or study
abroad or volunteering?

5.0 Conclusion: This should sum up your findings in your three main sessions, with any key action points that
you have identified

6.0 References: You should include any wider reading you have done to prepare the report, for example on
reflective writing or reflective models. References should be listed in alphabetical order according to Harvard
convention and referenced within the text of your report when cited or listed.

7.0 Action Plan:

You need to state any actions you are going to take as a result of your reflections. Make the actions SMART

S: Specific

M: Measurable

A: Appropriate

R: Realistic

T: Time framed e.g. with a target completion date
