Introduction

School is said to be the second home of students where everyone gets knowledge,

friends, and good memories but did you know that “approximately 160,000 teens skip

school every day because of bullying and 1 in 10 students drop out of school because of

repeated bullying.” (Osanloo, 2014) The main problem of bullying is the bullies

themselves. In my opinion, the social setting of the bullies might be the main factor that

affects their attitude. Therefore, I would like to do a research on the reasons why people

bully others.

Methodology

The reason why I chose this topic is that I believe that all bullies and bystander is

a group of people which affect bullying in school the most. To better understand the minds

of a bully, why this issue is still causing many problems even though schools and

organizations set lots of policy related to bullying, observe areas where students had been

bullied, or even counseling the victims and the bully, and the last one is how parents' treat

can impact this issue. I have constructed a survey which includes four sections: the general

information of survey taker, bullies, bullied, bystander, to know the student’s aspect of

bullying in school and the main factor that affects the bullies’ attitude. I have done a

survey with a group of students in grade 10 - 12 and teachers at Mahidol University

International Demonstration School (MUIDS), Thailand. The survey is sent through the

line group which is the place where people are easily connected and it was created by

google form which easy to fill. The question in my survey is mostly multiple choices and

checkboxes, I categorised the responders into sections based on their answer. These

responses from the receivers would help me better understand more about the thought of

student who had been bullied, who bullies others, and who had seen the situation.

Finding and discussion

As I mentioned preceding in the introduction part, the social setting of the bullies

might be the main factor that affects their attitude causes bullying. According to the results

from my survey, about 58.5 percent of students have experienced about school bullying

(mainly the responses from grade 10-11)(appendix A) and most bullying occurred in

school and internet. I think that "Bully" believes that they should show their authority and

want to be superior to others. Reflecting the lack of self-confidence and lack of security in

the mind of the bully and also the Social factors, some kids said that "I have been bullied

before. " (appendix B)So he/she bully others . During one particular age of life, children

will include their friends as valuable people. To get within the society, to be trusted and to

be involved and even when friends in the group unite to threaten someone, they will do

the same things in order to be accepted as the group. In my opinion can be supported by

several writers and psychologists.

Thomas McSheehy(2018) said that ”anger, shame, and fear are at the core of why kids

bully. They don’t feel good about who they are or what they feel, so they dominate others

in hopes of working out their problems and boosting their self-esteem.” The results of the

survey did not entirely support my thesis statement as some responder did not take the

survey seriously. Some people might not understand that this survey will be used for data

collecting in this report. If I were to go deeper into this topic, I would be more specific

with the questions and would expand the group responder to outside of my school.

Conclusion

In the final analysis, school bullying is a complicated issue and unacceptable

behavior. This causes too many problems, both physically and mentally. The bullying

started when someone bullies others, in the various form, it can deeply affect the person

bullied. The main causes of this issue are the bully themselves, the bully might have their

own difficulties that can affect their thinking system. However, we are focusing on how to

get rid of the bully while we should focus on why they bully others. While bully happens

4
not only the victim needs protection, love, and care although the bully needs to. Anywise,

this report is not supported school bullying but I just change the perspective of this issue.

The point painful childhood experiences and poor parenting, this is not about precise or

faulty but we should help to fix this problem.
