RESEARCH TITLE
Solar Distributed Generation for Energy Smart High Rise Buildings in Sri Lanka; Modelling & Optimizing
BACKGROUND
The last two decades have brought significant changes to the building design profession. The trend of
constructing high rise building are rapidly spread all over the world as a matter of space concern. Subsequently
the utility grid challenge is to meet the current growing energy demand and more conventional energy means
more emissions and more environmental impacts. Therefore, distributed energy production based on the
renewable energy sources (RES) have vital role. The most promising technology, photovoltaic (PV), offers the
chance to produce that most universal energy, electricity, through a semiconductor process using no moving
parts, no fuel other than sunlight, and creating no pollutants. The development and application of the Building
Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) power system in which the conventional building elements, such as roof tiles,
facade elements, and shading devices are replaced by the PV modules [1].

PROBLEM STATEMENT
With continuing growth in construction of high rise building in Sri Lanka, promoting energy efficiency building
concepts are a top priority since energy consumption of same will be on the rise. Key method of energy usage
will be in the form of electricity. Recent past, demand for electricity in local commercial buildings account to
25% -30%. Connecting these increased demand to the utility with conventional energy leading to higher
emission of co2 and bad impact on environment. It is urgently necessary to further develop independent, vital
and sustainable energy systems based on the renewable energy sources as distributed energy schemes.

OBJECTIVES
 To analyze the effectiveness of solar PV integration in to high rise buildings in Sri Lanka
 To develop mathematical model for energy production of photovoltaic system integrated in to building
