How does race affect the American Dream some may ask.

Well there many reason but the

main reason that it affects the American Dream is because Whites feel that they are the
superior race over every other. In the book a raisin in the sun you can see walter
complaining about how he is tired of working for the white man while he wants to open a
bar and work for himself but he is not able to because he needs to put his family first then
his dreams. It is his responsibility to do so. Another scenario within the book is when the
CIAP, tried to convince the youngers to move out because they were not wanted. The
American dream has changed from the beginning of the creation of America, it was to have
the opportunity to create a new life. However, is time passed the meaning of the American
dream had changed. It was to own a house, but it was very difficult for a minority to buy a
house. According to “How we built the ghettos” it talks about redlining which is when
African Americans were given houses but not with the whites. Instead they grouped all the
whites in one area and the value of that property increased but where the Minories were
grouped up the value was very low but they can modify the price in order for the company
which owns the home gains more money. Housing was very difficult for the minority group
to obtain due to all the discrimination going on and the wage gap. In the text it states “the
white-to-black wealth ratio was 12-to–1…But over the next 14 years the wealth gap began
to grow once again, until it had skyrocketed up to 19-to–1 in 2009.” This shows how houses
were not very affordable to the African Americans. Banks would not give them loans
because of blockbusting which is where the government informed banks where it is ok to
give money to because it will be gained back and where the money will be a risk or a
challenge getting back. Essentially, the whites had a huge advantage when it came to the
American Dream.
