CHAPTER I: THE PROBLEM

I. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

THIS STUDY FOCUSES ON THE SLUM HOUSING SITUATION OF THE URBAN


POOR IN THE PORT AREA, ONE OF THE DEFINED NEIGHBORHOOD COMMUNITY
IN METRO MANILA. THE METRO’S HOMELESS POPULATION IS IN THE HIGHEST
AMONG THE URBAN CENTERS IN THE WORLD MAKING THE DEVELOPMENT OF
THE CITY UNSUSTAINABLE. ROUGHLY 13 MILLION PEOPLE LIVE IN AN ALREADY
CONGESTED AREA AND MOST OF WHICH ARE INDIVIDUALS WHOM
MIGGRATED TO PURSUE JOBS AND THE PROMISE OF A BETTER LIFE IN THE CITY
CENTER.

AS OF MAY 1, 2010, CENSUS OF THE PORT AREA POPULATION HAS


REACHED 57,405 IN NUMBER. THE AREA IS SUBDIVIDED INTO FIVE BARANGAYS
FROM 649 TO 653, WHEREIN VAST OF THE POPULATION COMES FROM
BARANGAY 649. BUT THE GROWING NUMBER OF THE POPULACE ARE ONLY
ONE OF WHICH THAT RISES TO BE THE PROBLEM IN THE AREA, THE SITE WHEREIN
HOUSES ARE BUILT WITH LOW QUALITY MATERIALS IS LOCATED ALONG THE
WATERWAY SYSTEM WHICH IS SUBJECT TO FLOODING.

THIS CURRENT ISSUE CALLS FOR A NEED TO DEVELOP FUNCTIONAL AND


SELF-SUSTAINED COMMUNITIES THAT CAN WITHSTAND CALAMITIES LIKE
TYPHOON, FLOODINGS AND STRONG WINDS. AN IMPROVEMENT IN WHICH
WOULD RAISE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE THAT IS EASY TO MAINTAIN, BUILDABLE,
AFFORDABLE AND LOCALLY AVAILABLE ON SITE.

THESE THEN LEADS TO THE IDEA OF CREATING A HOUSING OUT OF THE


USE OF CONTAINER VAN WHICH ARE PREDOMINANTLY PRESENT IN THE AREA,
AND ITS UTILIZATION TO ACCOMMODATE CHANGES MADE BY NATURE
AGAINST FLOODING, AND BY THE WANTS OF THE USERS.

THE STUDY OF THIS FLOATING OR BOUYANT AND SELF-SUSTAINING


CARGOTECTURE HOUSING AIMS TO SUFFICE THE GREAT DEMAND FOR PROPER
SHELTER FOR THE PEOPLE IN SLUMS AND CALAMITY PRONE AREAS. IT IS IN
RESPONSE TO THE GREAT UNMET DEMAND FOR SAFE AND AFFORDABLE
HOUSING IN A REGION PRONE TO TYPOON AND FLOODING. THE SOLUTION IS
DESIGNED TO BE AFFORDABLE, SAFE, AND DURABLE. A SHELTER THAT CAN BE
LIVED IN, EASY TO ASSMBLE AND LOW COST TO OFFER THE LOW-INCOME
EARNERS IN THE PORT AREA.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

THE PORT AREA’S HOMELESS POPULATION IS CONTINUOUSLY


INCREASING, CAUSING A DECREASE IN THE LAND USE OF THE LOCATION AND
REDUCTION OF SPACE AVAILABLE FOR INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT. THESE
FACTORS CREATES AN INHUMANE ENVIRONMENT DANGEROUS TO THE
COMMUNITY AS IT EXPOSES THEM TO FREQUENT FLOODING, FIRE AND CURRENT
DANGERS OF KILLINGS IN THE STREET.

ALTHOUGH THE PPA OR THE PHILIPPINE PORT AUTHORITY HAS


PREVIOUSLY HELPED IN THE HOUSING OF THE URBAN POOR, AND THE LOCAL
GOVERNMENT AIDED IN PROVIDING BUILDING SUPPLIES, THE INADEQUATE
MAINTENANCE AND CONSIDERATION OF THE WEAR AND TEAR OF MATERIALS
AND FUTURE EXPANSION ADDED TO THE DETERIORATION OF THE BARANGAY’S
HOUSING.

THESE PROBLEMS LEAD TO THE THOUGHT OF THE USE OF CONTAINER


VAN HOUSING, BUT ALTHOUGH THE USE OF IT BRIMS WITH POTENTIAL IN
CREATING SOLUTIONS TOWARDS FLOODING AND INSUSTAINABILITY IT IS ALSO
SUBJECT TO VARIOUS ISSUES TOWARDS ITS DESIGN AND THERMAL PROTECTION.
THAT SAID, THIS PAPER SHALL PROVIDE SUBSTANSIABLE SOLUTION TO THE
FOLLOWING PROBLEMS:
A. INSUSTAINABILITY OF CURRENT SLUM HOUSING
a. USE OF CURRENT MATERIALS ARE MAKE-SHIFT. THESE
RANGES FROM THE USE OF PLYWOODS, GI SHEETS, TO
CMU’S.
b. THE UNEVEN STOREY LEVELS OF THE HOUSES ARE PRONE
TO BREAKAGE, OBSTRUCTS THE VIEW, AND IS PRONE TO

B. FLOODING
a. DUE TO THE IMPROPER SEWAGE SYSTEM, THE AREA

COMING FROM THE NORTH OF LUZON, THE AREA

III. OBJECTIVES GOALS AND STRATEGIES

THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY IS TO HELP IN DEVELOPING A


HOUSING UNIT THAT CAN BE USED BY THE COMMUNITY LIVING AT BARANGAY
650 RESIDING IN MANILA PORT AREA, TO MAXIMIZE THE USE OF SPACE AND
ALLOCATE MORE LAND FOR OTHER HOUSING FACILITIES. IN RESPONSE TO THIS,
THE RESEARCHERS PLAN TO TIE UP TOGETHER INFORMATIONS, PAST AND
RELATED STUDIES AND PROJECTS REGARDING DISASTER-RESILIENT DESIGNS
THAT SPEAKS ABOUT BOUYANCY, SELF-SUSTAINABILITY AND THE EFFECTIVENESS
OF CONTAINER VAN AS A HOUSING THAT SUPPORTS THE LATER CONCEPTS.
MOREOVER, TO FORMULATE SUGGESTIONS AND FUTURE REFERENCE OF A
DEEPER STUDY WITH REGARDS TO THE USE OF CONTAINER VAN FOR HOUSING
DEVELOPMENT IN THE PORT AREA.

OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH IS TO PROVIDE ANSWERS TO FOLLOWING


TOPIC:
A. TO ALLOT INIDIVIUAL SPACE AS A MEANS OF SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT.
B. TO APPLY BOUYANCY AS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO FLOODING
ADAPTABILITY. (mention overview research)
C. TO UTILIZE CONTAINER VAN AS A RESILIENT AND SUSTAINABLE
HOUSING. (define pros and cons) (-- MAS OKAY YUNG MATERIALS)

IV. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

ASIA BEING AT THE CENTER OF EONOMIC GROWTH AT THE TURN OF THE


CENTURY CAUSED DRASTIC CHANGES IN TERMS OF URBANIZATION IN ALL OF
TIS CITIES, AND MANILA INCLUDED. THERE “UNPRECENDENTED” GROWTH
PAVED WAY TO CREATING MORE INFRASTRUCTURES GENERATING MORE
JOBS, BUSINESSES AND INCOME TOWARDS THE ECONOMY. THESE CHANGES
DID NOT ONLY GROW INTO A DEVELOPMENT THAT WHAT IS DESIRED, BUT
ALSO TOWARDS THE CREATION OF INADEQUATE INFRASTRUCTURES PAVING
ITS WAY FOR THE RISE OF THE SLUMS AND INFORMAL SETTLERS WITHIN THE CITY
SCAPE OF MANILA. CREATING URBAN DECAY AND POLUTIONS THAT LEAD TO
CALAMITIES SUCH AS FLOODING. WITH THE POPULATION CONTINUING TO
GROW AND THE CLIMATE CONSTANTLY CHANGING, THERE RISES FOR A NEED
TO REFORM DETERIORATING HOUSING FOR THE SLUMS. THE IMPORTANCE OF
THE STUDY IS TO ADDRESS THE NECESSITIES OF SURVIVING IN SUCH
ENVIRONMENT WITH THE USE OF MATERIALS THAT ARE LOCALLY AVAILABLE
WITHIN THE SURROUNDINGS.

THE SLUMS BEING ONE OF THE BENEFICIARY OF THE RESEARCH, IT IS


BEING DEFINED AS HOUSEHOLDS IN UNLAWFUL SETTLEMENTS; UN HABITAT
DEFINES A SLUM HOUSEHOLD AS A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS LIVING UNDER THE
SAME ROOF LACKING ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:
ACCESS TO IMPROVED WATER, ACCESS TO IMPROVED SANITATION, A
SUFFICIENT LIVING AREA, AND DURABILITY OF HOUSING. THE POVERTY
INCIDENCE OF THE POPULATION IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA IS ON AVERAGE
OF 17% COMPARED TO THE 32% NATIONAL AVERAGE OF SLUM POPULATION
IN THE METROPOLITAN CITIES, WHICH IS GROWING AT AN ANNUAL RATE OF
3.4 PERCENT ACCORDING TO A SLUM POPULATION DATA CONDUCTED BY
FAMILY INCOME EXPENDITURE SURVEY. THE 4-5 MILLION NUMBER OF
DWELLERS COVERS ROUHGLY 37% OF THE CITY’S POPULATION IN WHICH IS
PROJECTED TO REACH 14.8 MILLION BY ACCORDING TO THE UNCHS.

ALTHOUGH NOT ALL HOUSEHOLD SLUMS ARE INCOME POOR. ABOUT


ONLY 32% OF THE SLUM POPULATION ARE POOR BASED ON THE NATIONAL
POVERTY LINES OF 20,688 PER CAPITA. MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO DWELL IN
THE SLUMS CAN SPEND IN BETWEEN 2-4 DOLLARS PER DAY ARE THOSE WHOM
ARE PART OF THE MINIMUM SALARY WORKERS WHO CONTINUE TO LIVE IN THE
SLUMS DUE TO HIGH COST OF TRANSPORTATION WHEN COMING FROM A
FAR, AND THE EARNINGS IN THE URBAN CENTERS.

ANOTHER FACTOR THAT GREATLY PURSUED THE STUDY IS THE FREQUENT


OCCURRENCE OF NATURAL CALAMITIES. LAST AUGUST 16 OF 2016, A
TORNADO PASEED THROUGH THE PORT AREA OF MANILA CAUSING
DAMAGES FROM THE FELLED TREES, AND CUT-OFFED ELECTRICITY. DESPITE
NOT PRODUCING ANY CASUALTIES, THE FREQUENCY OF RAINFALLS CAUSED
BY STORMS AND MOONSOON RAINS HAVE REPEATEDLY AFFECTED MOST OF
THE AREAS IN METRO MANILA. IN A REPORT GIVEN BY THE NATIONAL DISASTER
AND RISK REDUCTION COUNCIL, IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT THERE HAS BEEN
AT LEAST FIVE DEATHS DUE TO MONSOON RAINS AND 50,000 NUMBER OF
PEOPLE THAT ARE STILL IN THE 104 EVACUATION CENTERS IN METRO MANILA.
DURING ALSO THE RAINS OF THE AUGUST, MANILA HAS RECORDED AN
EXCESS OF 250MM OF RAIN WATER, MORE THAN THE AVERAGE EXPECTED
DURING THE MONTH. ADDITIONALLY, BEING THE WATERSHED AND WITH THE
LACK OF TREES FROM THE UPLANDS OF NORTHERN LUZON, THE HOUSING IN
MANILA BECOMES MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO FLOODING.

THE NEED TO ACCOMMODATE THE GROWTH AND THE WANTS OF THE


PROSPECTIVE OCCUPIERS ARE ALOS NEEDED TO BE CONSIDERED IN THEIR
HOUSING. DESPITE BEING PART OF THE URBAN POOR, HOUSING SHOULD NOT
ONLY BE ABLE TO PROTECT THEM FROM HARM BUT ALSO CATER TO THE USERS
TO DEVELOP INTO A COMMUNITY AND INDIVIDUALLY WITHOUT THEM BEING
COMPRESSED INTO ONW BUILDING. THE PROJECT AIMS TO BECOME “SELF-
SUSTAINING” IN WHICH IT WILL PRIORITIZE THE NEEDS THAT THE RESIDENTS FIND
NECESSARY. THIS COMES IN A SMALL AREA ADAPTABLE TO BECOMING AN
EXTENDED LIVING SPACE, SERVICE AREA, SMALL SCALE STORES OR OTHER
SPACES DEICIDED BY THE OWNER.

IN ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM WITHIN THE SLUM AREAS OF MANILA,


THIS PAPER PROPOSES A USE OF A HOUSING FACILITY THAT WOULD BE BOTH
ENSURING OF THE SAFETY WITHOUT BEING COSTLY TO ITS USERS. TO PROVIDE A
MUCH ECONOMICAL HOUSING THAT WOULD BOTH BENEFIT THE
GOVERNMENT AND THE COMMUNITY. THIS PAPER PROPOSES TO USE THE
UNCLAIMED CONTAINER VANS LOCATED AT THE NEARBY PORTS OF MANILA.
LAST 2014, THERE WAS A REPORT ABOUT HAVING AT LEAST 75,000 SHIPPING
CONTAINERS THAT ARE LEFT UNCLAIMED AT THE MANLA INTERNATIONAL
CONTAINER PORT AND THE PORT OF MANILA. THE ABANDONING OF
SHIPMENTS AND OF THE CONTAINER PORT AND THE PORT OF MANILA. THE
ABANDONING OF SHIPMENTS STILL HAPPENS UP TO THIS DATE, AND HAS
PROVEN TO CAUSE CONGESTIONS IN THE PORT AREAS. TO REDUCE THE
CONTAINER VANS IN THE PORT AREA AND AT THE SAME TIME ADDRESS THE
HOUSING ISSUE IN THE SLUM AREA OF MANILA, THE “PROPOSED DISASTER
RESILIENT AND SELF-SUSTAINING CARGOTECTURE” AIMS TO USE THE
UNCLAIMED SHIPPING CONTAINERS AS A MODE OF HOUSING FOR THE POOR,
AT THE SAME TIME GATHER AND FORMULATE HOUSING STRATEGIES THAT
WOULD CATER THE URBAN POOR IN THE PORT AREA.

V. SCOPE AND LIMITATION

THE STUDY COVERS THE THEORIES


AND PRACTICES IN DEVELOPING AN
ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTION TO THE
HOUSING OF THE URBAN BLIGHT IN
BARANGAY 650, MANILA PORT AREA. THE
STUDY WILL BE LIMITED TO THE SET-UP OF A
BOUYANT AND SELF-SUSTAINING HOUSING
WITH THE USE OF CARGOTHECTURE, AND
CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS ON HOW IT CAN BE

CHAPTER III:

I. RESEARCH DESIGN

THIS THIS STUDY WILL USE DESCRIPTIVE AND RESEARCH DESIGN. THE
STUDY SHALL BE CONSIST OF TECHNIQUES AND INNOVATION, PROVIDING A
SELF-SUFFICIENT AND BOUYANT CONTAINER HOUSING DESIGN.

DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH METOD DESCRIBES THE NATURE OF THE


SITUATION AS IT EXISTS AT THE TIME AND EXPLORATION OF THE STUDY. IT IS
USED TO DESCRIBE CHARACTERISTICS OF A POPULATION OR PHENOMENON
BEING STUDIED. IT DOES NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW/ WHEN/WHU
THE CHARATER OCCURRED, RATHER IT ADDRESSES THE “WHAT” QUESTION OF
THE POPULATION OR SITUATION BEING STUDIED.

EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH METHOD DISCOVERS INFORMATION BY


UTILIZING EXPERIMENTATION OR MANIPULATING ONE OR MORE DATA OR
VARIABLE, BUT WILL ONLY TOUCH THE CONCEPTUAL VARIABLES SUCH AS
BOUYANCY AND SELF-SUSTAINING IN DEVELOPING AN EFFECTIVE
CONTIANER HOUSUNG.

II. SAMPLES AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

PORT AREA IS ONE OF THE DEFINED COMMUNITIES IN MANILA, WITH THE


GROWING POPULATION OF 57,405 PEOPLE FROM BARANGAY 649 TO 653.
AS THE STUDY FOCUSES MORE ON BARANGAY 650 OF THE AREA, THE
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES USED IN THE STUDY WILL BE THE USE OF FORMULA,
WHEREIN HAVING A POPULATION NUMBER OF 3,437 LEADS TO A SAMPLE
SIZE OF 233 PEOPLE.
SAMPLING DATA TO BE COMPRISED OF SYSTEMATIC AND ACCIDENTAL
SAMPLING. SYSTEMATIC SAMPLING WOULD BE THE GETTING SAMPLES
FROM THE SAMPLE SIZE OF THE POPULATION THUS TAKING THE LAST 7 OF
THE RESPONDENTS, WHILE FOR ACCIDENTAL SAMPLING, THE RESEARCHERS
WOULD BE LOCATED IN THE BUSY STREETS OF THE BARANGAY 650 IN THE
PORT AREA, WHERE IT IS MORE CONVEINIET TO FIND RESPONDEDNTS FOR
THE RESEARCH.

III. INSTRUMENTATION
THE USE OF OBSERVATION, SENSES INTERVIEWS AND QUESTIONAIRE WILL
BE USED AS AN INSTRUMENT IN GATHERING DATA.

THE QUESTIONNAIRE AS A RESEARCH TACTIC IS DESIGNED TO CAPTURE


THE REACTIONS AND OPINIONS OF THE COMMUNITY TO THE TOPIC
PRESENTED. THIS CAN BE BASED ON HIS OR HER EXPERIENCE IN LIVING
WITHIN THE AREA AND BASED ON THE RESPONSES TO BE SUPPORTED WITH
OTHER EVIDENCES. IT SHALL BE COMPOSED OF EASY TO READ QUESTIONS, IN
A LANGUAGE FAMILIAR TO THE RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY.

UPON INTERVIEW, THE INTERVIEWEE WILL BE ENTIRELY COMPOSED OF


PEOPLE AND LEADERS OF THE BARANGAY 650. THESE CONDUCTED SURVEY
AND INTERVIEW RESULTS CAN BE SEEN IN ANNEX A.

IV. PROCEDURE

THE FIRST THING TO CONSIDER ON THE DURATION OF DATA GATHERING


IS THE OCCULAR INSPECTION OF THE SITE. AFTER NOTING DOWN SPECIFIC
PLACES WHERE PEOPLE GATHER IS THE PREPARATION FOR THE
QUESTIONNAIRES AND INTERVIEW OF BOTH THE PEOPLE AND OFFICIALS 651.
ONE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ASKING OF QUESTIONS AND THE
OTHER FOR THE DOCUMENTATION.

THE NATURE OF THE DATA COLLECTED FROM OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS


AND QUESTIONS INDICATED ON THE QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTED IN A LARGER
VOLUME OF INFORMATIONS. THE FINAL FORM IN WHICH THE DATA IS
PRESENTED WAS DETERMINED BY THE NATURE OF THE RESULTS.

V. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
THE INFORMATIONS IN THE STUDY WILL BE REPRESENTED IN BAR GRAPHS,
SEPARATING THE GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO ANSWERED THE QUESTIONS BY
AGE, GENDER AND QUESTIONS THAT WOULD REQUIRE ONE ANSWER.
THE USE OF LINE GRAPHS AND PIE CHARTS ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO
SPECIFY THE MOST ANSWERED LETTER AMONG QUESTIONS THAT REQUIRES
MORE THAN ONE ANSWER.
CHAPTER IV: RESULTS AND DICUSSION
IN ADDRESSING THE CREATION OF AN EFFECTIVE HOUSING FOR THE
BARANGAY, THE RESEARCH GATHERED RESULTS RANGING FROM THE CURRENT
STATISTICS IN POPULATION, EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THEIR CURRENT HOUSING, JOBS,
AND THEIR CAPABILITY TO PAY IF THE COMMUNITY PROVIDED WITH A HOUSING UNIT.
THE UPON CONDUCTING THE INTERVIEWS IN THE LOCALITY, THE GROUP HAS
STUMBBLED UPON ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS THAT STARTS TO ARISE WITHIN THE
COMMUNITY SUCH AS THE RISING PROBLEM OF RELIGION AND CULTURE DIFFERENCES
OF THE LOCALS LIVING WITHIN THE SITE, AND THE DANGERS OF THE REGULAR KILLINGS
THEY LINK TO THE “TOKHANG” PROJECT BY TaHE POLICE.

I. RESULTS

A. POPULATION
AS OF 2010, THE PSA OR PHILIPPINE STATISTICS AUTHORITY CONDUCTED
A SURVEY WITH REGARDS TO THE POPULATION OF THE MANILA PORT AREA.
CURRENTLY, THE PORT AREA IS POPULATED BY 57,405 PEOPLE COMING FROM
DIFFERENT BARANGAYS PARTICULARLY FROM 649 TO 653. WHEREIN, 50,918

CONCERNED WITH SHELTER PROTECTION, AN IDEAL HOUSING AND THE

UPON DISCUSSING THE QUERIES REGARDING THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE WITHIN
THE BARANGAY, WE HAVE CONCLUDED A SERIES OF ADDITIONAL DESIGN
CONSIDERATION IN ORDER TO ADDRESS THE HOUSING IN THE AREA, WHICH WERE
ALSO WELCOMED IN THOUGHT BY THE COMMUNITY.

1. ELEVATION OF HOUSING AND RETAIL USE OF THE GROUND LEVEL.

THE CURRENT HOUSING CALLS FOR AREAS RESERVED FOR RETAILING


PURPOSES. AS OF TODAY, MOST OF THEIR PRODUCTS ARE EITHER EXPOSED TO
WEATHERING, OR OTHERS USE THEIR OWN KIOSKS AS THEIR OWN HOUSES AS WELL.
THESE FACTORS ADDS UP TO THE PAINS OF THE COMMUNITY ESPECIALLY DURING
FLOODING, AS THEY NOT ONLY NEED TO THINK OF WHICH HIGHER GROUND TO

LOCATE THEIR PRODUCTS, BUT ALSO FOR THEMSELVES.

2. IMPROVEMENT OF THE CURRENT HOUSING

UPON CREATING A SUITABLE SPACE FOR THE COMMUNITY, THE RESEARCHERS


WERE ASSISTED TO ONE OF THE RESIDENTS HOMES. THE OWNER OF THE HOUSE IS MS.
MEDINA NARRA WHO HAS BEEN LIVING IN THE COASTAL AREA FOR MORE THAN 30
YEARS. THE TYPICAL LAYOUT OF THEIR HOME IS A MAKE-SHIFT CANTEEN THAT ALSO
SERVES AS THEIR HOME THAT CAN FIT IN 10 OF HER FAMILY MEMBERS. THE TYPICAL
LAYOUT CONSISTS OF A STORE ON THE OUTSIDE AND A ROOM SMALLER THAN 4 SQM.
FOR THEIR SLEEPING AREA, THE HOME ALSO CONSITS OF A KITCHEN BUT IS WITHOUT
THE ACCESS TO A WATER CLOSET. IT ALSO EXPOSES THEM TO A GUTTER DEEP
FLOODING DURING NORMAL RAINS AND DANGERS OF UNEXPECTED SHOOT OUTS IN
THE AREA AT NIGHT, MAKING THE CALL FOR DEVELOPING A HOUSING FACILITY MADE
OUT OF CONTAINER VAN APPEALING TO HER AND HER HUSBUND.

CHAPTER 5: SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

I. SUMMARY

BEING ONE OF THE POOREST AREAS IN THE METRO, THE MANILA COASTAL
AREA CONTINUES TO GROW IN POPULATION AND BATTERED UPON BY THE NATURAL
CALAMITIES THAT HAPPENS IN THE COUNTRY. THESE OCCURRENCES HAS NOT ONLY
MADE CASUALTIES TO PEOPLE BUT ALSO BROUGHT DISASTERS TO HOMES. BEING A
CATCH BASIN TO THE WATERSHEDS SURROUNDING THE CENTRAL LUZON AREA. THE
AIM OF THE STUDY IS TO CREATE A HUMANITARIAN HOUSING THAT WOULD BOTH
SECURE AND SUSTAIN THE USERS WITHOUT HAVING TO COST MUCH.

THIS IS DONE THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF THE PEOPLES’ NEEDS, CAPACITY TO


PAY, AND THE CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPING OF FLOODING SOLUTION AND THE
HOUSING USE OF CONTAINER VAN WHILE UTILIZING ANG IMPROVING ITS COMFORT
OF USE.

II. CONCLUSION

THE AREA BEING SUBJECT TO FLOODING, AND THE LACK OF HOUSING


FACILITIES CREATES A NEED TO DEVELOP A HOUSING WITH THE INTENSION OF AIDING
IN THE GROWTH OF THE USERS. IN CONCLUSION, GIVEN THE CURRENT SURVEYS AND
ARTICLES THAT THE RESEARCHERS HAVE GATHERED, WITH THE RIGHT MAINTENANCE, IT
IS POSSIBLE TO RECREATE ABANDOND CONTAINER VANS AS DURABLE, BOUYANT AND
SELF-SUSTAINING HOUSING FOR THE BARANGAY.

THE IMMEDIATE NEED OF A STURDY HOUSING FACILITY BY THE COMMUNITIES


CALLS FOR THE CONCEPTUAL DESIGN THAT WOULD NOT ONLY PROTECT THE PEOPLE
FROM INCOMING CALAMITIES, BUT WOULD ALSO CATER SHADED AREAS FOR THEIR
LIVELIHOODS, PROMOTING SECURITY BY PROPERLY ORGANIZING THE LAND TENURE
AND THE USE OF SPACE AS ROOM FOR CULTIVATING INDIVIDUAL GROWTH INTO A
COMMUNAL DEVELOPMENT.
III. RECOMMENDATION

TO CREATE A LIVING SPACE AIMING FOR THE HUMANITIZING OF THE HOUSING


PLANS OF BARANGAY 650, THE FOLLOWING SHOULD ADD THE FOLLOWING INTO
CONSIDERATION:

1. DEVELOP LIVING SPACES WITHIN THE BUILDING FOR EACH RESIDENT.


2. CREATE RETAILS AND COMMON AREAS AT THE GROUND FLOOR TO
PROVIDE USERS INCOME SOURCE, AND TO ACT AS A COMMUNAL PLACE
FOR THE DWELLERS.
3. USE THE CONCEPT OF BOUYANCY IN RESPONSE TO SUDDEN CALAMITIES
SUCH AS FLOODING ANG STRONG TYPHOONS.
4. BUILD WITH THE USE OF CONTAINER VAN FOR AND EASY BUILT HOUSING
REDUCING THE CONSTRUCTION COST.

IN LINE WITH THIS, THE RESEARCHERS CREATED A SAMPLE LAYOUT OF THE PLAN.
AT THE GROUND FLOOR, IT WOULD BE BETTER TO ALLOCATE THE SPACE OF RETAIL
AND COMMUNAL PURPOSES BACK AT FIGURE___.

THIS KIND OF HOUSING IMPLORES THE USE OF CONTAINER VAN IN RIGID FORMATIONS TO
NOT ONLY PLANNING TO ATTAIN HOUSING, BUT ALSO A MODE TO DIFFERENTIATE ONE HOUSING
AFTER ANOTHER. THE ELEVATION OF THE HOUSING TO THE SECOND FLOOR AREA SERVES AS A
ABUTMENT INCASE OF LIGHT FLOODING, AND ITS CAPACITY TO INCASE OF HEAVY RAINFALL. THE
STRUCTURE IS DESIGNED TO FLOAT MUCH LIKE FIGURE__ INCASE OF HEAVY POUR OF RAINFALL
AND FLOODING.

THE HOUSING PLAN UTILIZES THE USE OF FREE SPACE LOOKING BACK TO FIGURE__.
ADDITIONALLY, IT USES RAMPED AREAS FOR THE PWD’S, HAS AT LEAST 4 WINDOWS INCLUDING
FOR THE T&B AND A FRONT AND BACKDOOR. IT IS WITH THE CAPACITY TO ACCOMMODATE AT
