ABSTRACT

Transport systems have a great part to play in the development of the

economic sector of the Philippines. The dispersed regions of the country has

made it difficult for the government to connect one from the other and also the

methods of transferring of goods and services are always being improved.

Another point to be considered is that one of the effects of growth and

development is traffic congestion and this has been a problem in the

transportation sector for years. According to the Asian Development Bank (ADB),

road transport accounts for 98% of passenger traffic and 58% of cargo traffic.

The growing population of Puerto Princesa City makes an increase in the

number of daily commuters. The City is a popular destination for both

international and domestic visitors and with the influx of tourists in the City and

ribbon like developments, heavy traffic congestion is being experienced today

thus putting the safety of the people in jeopardy.

The enormous growth of individual transport in the last decades has led to

a great burden on the environment due to emissions and space use, and

disturbance of accessibility to important areas due to congestion on road

networks. There is also an economic decline as a result of congestion because of

the delays in cargo deliveries, time loss for workers who are stuck in traffic and

for huge gas consumption.

Poor interconnectivity of transport in the City disturbs the continuous flow

of passengers and goods hence; it causes interruption to what could have been a

seamless transportation.
From what have been stated above, Puerto Princesa needs a public

transport terminal that will integrate different modes of public transport. This

project entitled, “Proposed Puerto Princesa Intermodal Transit Hub” would like to

introduce an intermodal transit center that would remove, if not, mitigate the

current transport problems that the City has and also the future challenges that a

poor transportation system might bring.

The site in Barangay Irawan was chosen as the place for an intermodal

transit hub because of its strategic location going to and from North and South of

Palawan and to the Central Business District of Puerto Princesa. The lot is also

owned by the government, hence, providing development for its unutilized lot

areas.

The project design is an inspired form of green architecture showcasing

Filipino artistry that was derived from analyzing the basic function of every space

and meets the desired color, texture and shape. The said design will encourage

commuters and passengers for the utilization of the area because of its pleasing

ambiance outside and inside of the project and also it is expected to be iconic

and be a new land mark of Puerto Princesa.

Exploring how an intermodal transit hub can provide efficient transfer

between different transportation modes, comfortable experience during

commuters’ transfer, as well as a lively civic place for the neighborhood, is the

goal of this proposal.
