INTRODUCTION

In 2002, the Aging & Independence Services

Health Promotion Unit, in
collaboration with multiple community partners
in the south portions of the
county, established the Intergenerational
Games. This program is designed to
promote health and physical fitness, and
intergenerational relationships
among seniors and children within San Diego
County. The IG Games were
created as an innovative approach to address
health and social issues in the
community, such as the alarming rate of
overweight youth, which exceeds 25
percent, and the high rate of seniors diagnosed
with diabetes and heart
disease. IG Games take place annually in the
south, east, and north portions of
the County with plans to expand to the central
region.

So then we thought, "Hey, why not do this for

families as well?" This is exactly what this will
give you: a step-by-step on how to have your
own game day with your family and friends.

Goals & Outcomes

The goal of having a game day is to improve the bond within your family
members and friends as well to promote healthy, long-life behaviors. The
goals of the event are to encourage physical activity, impart information
about nutrition and healthy behaviors (if you would like), and create
stronger intergenerational contact through an inspiring half-day or more
of fun and fitness.

Active adults serve as role models for youth and help to gain even more
trust between parents and their children. The event helps participants
develop respect for the strengths, abilities, and challenges of each
generation.

Days of
Logistics
· Set up early to set up needed equipment, game stations, and
of course, breakfast!

·Make sure you provide lots of water for the day

·Once friends and family arrive, have a brief orientation for them
(Pretty much explain the ropes of the event)

·Ensure first-aid is good to go (just in case some one gets hurt)

·Once introduction is complete, double check to see if all games

work for the family and are fully operational (like a board game;
you gotta make sure it has all the pieces!)

· After lunch, give yourselves time to rest and/or go for a casual

walk around the neighborhood

· Start putting away all games and sports equipment

· Give huge THANK YOU to all of your family and friends for being
part of this fun filled day

Conclusion

At the end of the day, you might

think, "Am I as connected to my
family as I ought to be?" It's hard
to answer questions like that.
You can never really know unless
you figure out a way to answer
that question. That was the goal
of this guide in the first place! If
you end up having a stronger
bond with your family, you'll
have this guide to thank!
