Medieval Food

From the medieval times to now cooking has changed in many ways. From food edicate?

to cooking to the dining experience here are a few ways food has changed.

Beginning with food preparation one of the major elements in cooking. In the medieval

times, food prep. consisted of placing all the ingredient in a pot and cook it on an open fire.

Nowadays we prep. consists of cleaning, seasoning preheating and much more. As cooking

progressed so did the equipment. In medieval times, they used an open flame for cooking.

Nowadays, we use stoves and ovens for cooking.

The way we eat food has evolved too. For instance, as Bovey states in the article

"All fruit and vegetables were cooked, it was believed that raw fruit and vegetables caused

disease." Now, we know that raw vegetables will not give us disease and most are actually better

for you raw like broccoli and Spinach. (Patel) “ Bread was so important to the medieval diet that

commercial bakers formed powerful "guilds" that sort of functioned like a cross between a union

and the mafia.” (Perry)

From as early as recorded history there has been some type of public eatery. A restaurant

or, an inn have been around for a very long time but back in the medieval times, it was very

different. Taverns and inns were popular at the time all the way up into the Renaissance. There

were also fast food joints but not like the McDonalds and Burger King we know and love.

In today’s world, we go out and eat at restaurants a lot it is apart of today’s culture. A

restaurant that got popular was the White Castle because of its white interior promoting cleanliness.

That also set the way for more restaurants to open up like McDonald's and Burger King.

In the medieval times, there were no food safety laws no Food and Drug Act like we have

today. Before laws were set in motion for food safety restaurants could put just about anything

they wanted in the food. Nowadays we have things like the FDA to cut out any gross and

dangerous foods.
