Art is something I cannot quite describe in a couple of words. It is something that
is diverse and varies in nature. What is art for me may be hideous to you. But no matter
its appeal as long as it exudes any form of creativity from the human mind, I believe it
could be considered art. Growing up, I did not think this way. I had been exposed to
many different forms of art whether it is in the form of music or visual art. I never quite
understood it. I’ve always had this perception that art was meant to be beautiful and that
it was objective. I guess I believed that art should look a certain way. Especially when it
comes to paintings, sculptures, and alike all of which, the ones I’ve seen growing up
had a certain type of intricacy that was evident in the art piece itself. I knew that those
pieces came from the blood, sweat and tears of the artist because of the delicate brush
strokes in the painting and the subtle curves in the sculpture. However, while I still
believe that the beautiful paintings and sculptures I was exposed to during various
museum trips I’ve taken as a child were definitely art, I now have a broader and wider
appreciation of what could be considered art.
In this day and age, it is important to have an open mind. The generation I’m
currently a part of, Generation Z, runs on the idea of diversity and individuality. Although
we may not all be the same, I can say for sure that we support each and every idea for
the greater good in this world. This translates perfectly in the art scene. As time
marches forward, each generation develops a more progressive idea on what can be
considered art. I cannot say that we are in the pinnacle of art or that art becomes better
as times moves forward. However, I can say for certain that it molds itself into new
forms and styles relative to the time and circumstance of the generation it came out of.
Art is integrated into my everyday life whether I like it or not. I’m deeply interested
in conventional and traditional art in the form of music most especially. Not a day goes
by in my life where I don’t listen to music. It probably comes from my grandmother
allowing me to learn to play the piano growing up. Although, I’ve veered away from
playing classical music in the piano I’ve learned to love playing pieces from film scores
and modern songs in general. My love for music only grows day by day as I continue to
make music a part of my life during commutes and even as I study. I’ve also tried to be
more open to the different genres in music. I used to scoff at people who listen to
mainstream pop music as I continue to listen to Grammy award winning albums of
numerous artists ranging from the genre of rock to hip hop. I now know that this mind-
set is completely backwards in the march to appreciate music as an art form. Whether it
is the mainstream pop songs that make you move the second you hear it or the
emotional and vivid classical pieces from the time of Bach and Chopin, I believe either
or could be considered art.
Another art form that I’m deeply passionate about is martial arts. I’m a big fan of
watching the UFC which showcases fighters with different backgrounds in different
martial arts as they fight to see which is better. I understand that not many people would
even dare consider this art but as a judo player, I’m able to see the merit of any martial
art as part of the arts. In Judo for example, the goal of which is to throw the opponent
with minimum force, the style and grace of a perfect throw shows the beauty of the sport
of how one can manipulate another person’s momentum against them. The beauty of a
perfect throw is really something and the journey in which the player gets to do that
throw while dodging and faking the opponent along the way shows the intricacy of the
sport as an art. I believe this is further shown in many other martial arts such as Aikido,
Muay Thai, Karate, Taekwondo, Tai Chi and many others. While I understand it may not
be art in the sense of paintings and sculptures the grace and creativity in execution in
performing these martial arts warrants it being part of the arts.
I’ve also come to appreciate art forms such as film, photography, architecture,
and even stand-up comedy. All of which have created a positive impact in my life by
boosting my creativity and by simply helping me appreciate this life a little more. Without
all of these, I think I’d see life only in shades of black and white. While basic necessities
such as food, shelter, and clothing allow us to survive, it is only through the arts that
humanity is able to live and thrive.
