CHAPTER 1

In this research, we came up with this title because we want to enhance our
knowledge about the impacts of social media to the students of Santiago National High
School, especially the Grade 8 students. Due to the rapidly-developing technology,
student became reliant to social media and technology. But with the help of it, we can
easily correct our grammar and help us improve our writing skills, if we don’t have prior
knowledge about it.

Internet has various sites including social media website, first of all, social media
is a form of electronic communications through which people create online communities
to share information, ideas, personal messages, etc. according to the Merriam Webster
Dictionary (2004). Social media have different type of websites such as Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, Google, etc. Nowadays, social media is helpful among students in
ways such as communicating about projects and tasks in school and by browsing it,
they can improve their vocabulary in that way it can help them to elevate the level of
their writing skills.

In social media, there are various selections that can help them and give them
inspirations and tips on how to increase their knowledge and skills in writing. Be that as
it may, if an individual has poor writing skills and grammar patterns, then social media
can add to perpetuate grammar usage. Even teachers know that social media, if used
properly, can help the students improve in different aspects. Sharing their ideas via
internet like blogging can encourage them since they know that their efforts may be in
public. Creativty in writing can also be enhanced through finding ideas through social
media. Also, social media allows the students to be more expressive about their
thoughts and ideas. This effects will help the students grow as an individual and as a
writer.

As the survey was conveyed, we learned that social media isn’t just a website
wherein we can socialize and be connected with different persons, it can also be an
instrument to improve a person’s writing skills. If we can broaden our minds through
reading a book, then it can also be applied via social medias. The correspondent grade
8 students of Santiago National High School said that social media had helped them in
improving their writing skills.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

Base on the research of (Richardson and Pascopella , 2009). These “new

literacies” share reading and writing information for global access and build student
relationships among peers to work in a collaborative way (Richardson and
Pascopella,2009).From a pedagogical standpoint, I think it is important for students to
collaborate, critique and analyze their writing skills. Social Media can allow for students
to work together which can enrich their writing skills in a fun and interactive way. When
students are able to connect through social media to enhance their writing skills ,they
are connected in a way that they feel is relatable to their own world. Facebook is a
website that has particularly gained a significant amount of attention and research
yields its potential to enhance writing skills. Therefore, the social media can help the
students to relate and enhance their writing skills

Even though Facebook receives positive and negative criticism, it is unarguable

that “Facebook continues to grow as a powerful resource for information” (Pilgrim and
Beldsoe, 2011).Facebook is a potential tool for educators to help students, particularly
in regards to literacy and writing skills. Hence, the social media like facebook has so
many information that students can use

According to Kirkland (2008), believes that by taking an approach to closely

examine literacy on social network sites, such as Facebook , teachers will gain entry
into a new textual world that yields perceptions about students writing skills and focuses
on ideas about literacy and its evolved processes in today’s world. Hence, social media
was great tool to enhance our writing skills because there is a ton of information that we
can use.
