Photograph 1969 by Katy Barber

This is my mother
lifting her hair long
like a low whistle
off her neck
These are her fingers
caught in the tangles
of brown and gold caught in
silver earrings
This is my father
reaching through the lens
to touch the edge
of a new family
to touch her opening belly
under her full dress

This is existing
before I exist

This is me growing up
against their lives
him watching for a sharp
breath from her looking out
onto the border of birth
this is bumping us into three

1. Who is the speaker in the poem?
2. What is he/she talking about?
3. Do you think the parents love their child?
4. Do you think the child loves her parents? Why?
Why not?

D. Discussion
Today we will discuss another part of speech which is
the adjective.

Adjectives are words that describes or modify nouns

or pronouns.
For example:
Pretty, big, loud, happy
They make your writing and speaking much more
specific, and a whole lot more interesting.

Can you give me examples of adjectives that you

know? Very good.

(Present to the class a picture. Have students

described it and then, let them use their adjectives in
a sentence.)

Do you now understand adjectives? Good.

E. Application
Now that you all know what an adjective is, let us
apply what you’ve learned. Inside the box I’m holding
are photographs. I will give each one of you a picture
and you will write a two-stanza poem about it. You
are given 10 minutes to do it. Do you understand?

F. Generalization

for today.)
