NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

 Communication not only involves the spoken


words that is referred as non-verbal
communication.

 Communication through the use of signs and


symbols is non verbal Communication.

 Non verbal communication involves sending and


receiving messages through gestures, body
language, posture, facial expression, clothing,
appreance and managing time etc.
TYPE OF NON- VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
 Non-verbal communication is classified
into the following categories:
 Kinesics:
 Proxemics
 Haptics
 Chronemics
 Chromatics
 Paralanguage.
Kinesics

 It is the science that deals with the body


movements. It includes
gestures, facial, expressions, posture, eye
contact etc.
PROXEMICS
It studies how we communicate through the
space zone around us. We talk about the four
zones.
 intimate zone - this zone is generally
family member and close friends.

 personal zone - this zone is conversation


take place b/w close friends, colleagues,
associates.
 social zone – most official or formal
interactions fall into this category.

 public zone – this zone is about


presentation and public speaking
Haptics
Touches that can be defined as
communication include handshake,
holding hands, kissing (cheek, lips,
hand), back slapping, a pat on the
shoulder, and brushing an arm.
 The meaning conveyed from
touch is highly dependent upon
the context of the situation, the
relationship between
communicators, and the manner of
touch.
CHRONEMICS
 Time or chronemics can be used very differently with
respect to individuals and cultures.

 Time perceptions includes punctuality, willingness to


wait and interactions.

 Time affects lifestyles, daily agendas, speed of


speech and movements, how long people are willing
to listen, etc.

 It is the science that deals with the perception of time.


It is very important parameters from a business
perspective.
CHROMATIC
 It is the use of colour to communicate.
 Time is immemorial that colour has been
used symbolically in different cultures.
 Such as white is associated with peace and
Purple is associated with royalty.
PARALANGUAGE

 Paralanguage (sometimes called


vocalics) is the study of non-verbal cues
of the voice.
 Various properties of speech such as
tone, pitch,pause,rhythm and accent, all
gives non-verbal cues.
 Paralanguage may change the meaning
of words.
IMPORTANCE OF NON-
VERBAL COMMUNICATION

1) It helps to give non-verbal feedback while


verbal communication is going on.

2) Knowledge of non-verbal emotional


communication is also an important resource for
managing and avoiding conflicts.

3) Non Verbal Communication creates strong


relation than verbal. A person who express
his/her views and experiences using various
facial expression and gestures.
4) You can communicate at place where
you are supposed to maintain silence.

5) You can communicate something which


you don't want others to hear or listen to.

6) Non-verbal communication makes


conversation shorter and brief.
