Module 5- Individual Assignment

The project being referred to in this discussion was a Form two lesson on Relations done

for a clinical supervision last week, where I included ICT by using Google Slides to recap work

done with embedded videos, after which they had to draw a Graph of the form y= mx + c on Excel.

Students were better behaved than usual, they were quiet and attentive to the presentation

and videos and the pictures used were clearer than the ones I drew on the whiteboard. I think it

was essential especially for reviewing a topic, I would not use anything different. The laptop being

used was a bit slow so transitioning from the video back to the presentation took some time. I had

to have some patience in order for this to settle so I questioned students on the topic while waiting.

This part of the lesson where students had to use excel to draw a graph was a first even for

me. Students had to first obtain ordered pairs in their groups (each group had different relations to

use), after which they were guided through the process of drawing their graphs on Excel. Students

were unaware of the terms being used such as: cells, minimize the screen, using the left or right

key to move through cells to name a few. I had to walk around quite often to check each group’s

laptop to ensure they were on task. After reflecting on this, maybe I could have shown a video

demonstrating the steps first after which students would try it on their own, which would have

been the implementation of the SAMR model, where students could pause the video or rewind for

better understanding.

The students walked around after completing the exercise to observe the graphs obtained

by other groups. They were able to see the different types of possible graphs with positive or

negative gradients as well as the possibilities of the y-intercept value. I was unable to give students

a question to attempt on their own since time ran out. Even though it was a double period, the time

was insufficient partly because the procedure to get the laptops from the office took some time.
Also, it was the students’ first time using the laptops in my subject area and I think it contributed

to the time delay in completing tasks. The fact that I myself found this to be fun to use, I will

incorporate it more in class to avoid this problem in the future.

In conclusion, the use of ICT in this activity introduced students at an early stage to be

more prepared for the upcoming e testing from next year. Since most jobs now are computer related

this exposure will make them ready for the real world.
