1 SCOPE
This section deals with basic practices and minimum requirements governing the
selection of materials and design criteria for all concrete and is not intended to
replace the judgment of the design engineer.

3 DESIGN
3.1 A statement covering the properties of the materials and the proportion by weight
of cement, water, aggregates and additives proposed for each class of concrete
required for the job shall be submitted by the contractor.

3.2 Design strength of concrete mixes shall be not less than those given in the
following:

COMPRESSIVE
USE STRENGTH psi
kg/cm 2
Low strength conc. for filling purposes 100 1500
mass is the principal requirement
Conc. on or below grade such as footings, 140 2000
pile caps, tie beams, grade beams,
anchor blocks, catch basins, pumps
blocks, paving and sidewalks

precast piling
Prestressed piling Exposed to sea water 350 5000

3.3 The values shown in 3.2 represent 28 day compressive strength of normal
portland cement concrete or 7 day compressive strenght of high–early strength
conc. as determined by test on 152 mm. (6 in.) diameter by 305 mm. (12 in.) height
cylinder per Covenin 340 through to 346 (ASTM C192).

3.4 Schedule of Test Cylinders

Min. N° of
Quantity of Conc. 7 Days 8 Days
Cylinders
30 m3 or less 2 1 1
30 – 75 m3 yds. 4 2 2
75 m3 and over 6 3 3

3.5 Test specimen shall be taken and tested by an approved laboratory in accordance
with Covenin 1680, 484 (ASTM Specification C172, C31, and C39, latest issue).
Results of test shall immediatley be submitted to PDVSA’s representative.

3.6
a. Where the ultimate 28 day compressive strength of concrete in test cylinder
falls below the strength specified for the class of conc. tested, at below
proportional minimum 7 day strengths, the proportions, water content or
temperature conditions shall be changed to secure the required strength.
b. Concrete temperatures should be kept within desirable limits using methods
recommended in Covenin 1680, 486 (ACI 305).

3.7 A slump test shall be performed to each test cylinder taken and results recorded
will be submitted in the same report.

RECOMMENDED SLUMPS Slump in mm.

S.N°°
Type of Construction max. min.
1 Exposed roof slabs 50 25
2 Heavy mass construction 50 25
3 Pavements 75 25
4 Plain footings 75 25
5 Reinforced foundations walls and footings 75 25
6 Columns, beams, reinforced walls and slabs 100 25
Note: Max slump may be increased 25 mm. for methods of consolidation other
than vibration.

3.8 Where cylinder tests indicate strengths below those specified, at the discretion of
the PDVSA’s representative, cores shall be taken of the work as builts, and tested
in accordance with Covenin 345 (ASTM Specification C–42), latest revision. If the
tests of the core samples indicate concrete of specified strength of cores shall be
defined in each particular project, but in no case shall be less than fifteen percent
below the herein specified values. If the core tests indicate strenght of fifteen
percent or more below those specified, the cost of coring and testing shall be at
the contractor’s expense, remove all unstisfactory concrete from the work and
replace it with sound concrete of the specified strength.
