SECTION ONE:

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY

1.1 Introduction
Chemical engineering laboratory is designed to teach the students how to analyze
experimental operation, project definition, analytical procedures, data analysis and technical
reports preparation involving unit operations, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer,
reaction engineering, fluid mechanics and separation and in transport phenomena
1.2 Course Objectives
This course will help the students to understand the method of data collection, analysis and
data presentation.
The specific objectives are to:
a) Develop competence in conducting experimental work.
b) Acquire a "hands-on" laboratory experience.
c) Understand safety procedures common to the laboratory and chemical industry.
d) Develop and demonstrate knowledge of experimental error analysis, probability and
statistics.
e) Improve skills necessary for group work collaboratively within a setting.
f) Develop skills in handling, manipulating and maintaining basic engineering machinery.
1.3 Course Outcomes
On completion of this course, a student should be able to collect and analyze experimental
data and its relationship to theoretical principles of:
I. Unit Operations
II. Fluid Mechanics
III. Heat and Mass transfer
IV. Thermodynamics
V. Reaction Engineering
VI. Prepare laboratory reports that clearly present the experimental results, analysis,
and relationship to theory.
VII. Acquire skills in operating chemical engineering equipment and measurement
Apparatus.
Before beginning an experiment, each member of the group must be familiar with the
equipment and versed in the theory behind the experiment. To facilitate readiness, each
student will prepare a preliminary report that explains the theory and equipment to be used
for the experiment.
1.5 Lab Reports
Each group/individual will conduct at least eight lab experiments and write reports. All the
reports will be individually written except in some special cases. The reports, will address
the material more thoroughly, and more in-depth above the preliminary. Discussion of
theory and results will be required.
Reports are due one week after each experiment. The reports will be graded and usually
within one or two weeks, and the Department will provide detailed comments at that time.
1.6 Responsibility of Students
i. Attendance is compulsory. Attendance shall be taken during the laboratory sessions.
ii. Please sign your attendance when you attend the laboratory session.
iii. Laboratory report can only be accepted for submission if the student has attended
the laboratory session.
iv. Student must be punctual to attend laboratory session.
v. Students who are late for more than 30 minutes will not be allowed to attend
laboratory session. Only students with valid reason of medical basis or unforeseen
circumstances can be considered.
vi. Students must understand all the safety measures/precaution steps before starting
any experiments.
vii. Student must complete the experiment within the allocated duration of laboratory
session. Students are responsible for the condition of their working area at the end of
each laboratory session.
viii. Students are to submit their experimental result to laboratory officer on the same day
after every experiment for stamping and signing. A copy of the experimental result
must be attached together with the laboratory report.
ix. Fabricating results and plagiarism are strictly prohibited. Strict action will be taken if
student is found fabricating' results or copy from others.
x. Students have to submit their laboratory report 1 week after the date of experiment
to laboratory officer.
