Learning Activity 2

Evidence: The Exchange Program

Student exchange programs have become quite popular. Nowadays, it is easy

to spend a summer, a semester or even a year in another country studying and
learning about another culture. These programs became increasingly popular
after World War II and were originally created in an effort to increase
understanding and tolerance of other cultures. They were also designed for
participants to improve their foreign language skills and social interaction
abilities.

Many students from secondary school or university have the chance to travel
and study abroad*. There are a variety of options available allowing you to
select the location and type of program. There are also options for all types of
budgets and preferences. In some cases exchange students live and share with
a host family while they study. This reinforces cultural literacy and language
learning when applicable. The host family provides a room, food and cultural
exchange for the student.
Exchange programs are definitely an excellent option to improve cultural
knowledge and interact with people from other cultures.

 Study abroad: To study in a different country.

Your family is participating in an international student exchange program.

Therefore you are going to receive a student from New Zealand who is going to
stay from January to April in your country, learning the language and interacting
with your culture. Write him an e-mail introducing you and your family and telling
him about your country and its culture.

Consider the following questions for the email:

 Why did you decide to enroll in this program?

 What do you know about New Zealand and its culture?

 What does he need to know about your country and its culture?

 What is the weather like during those months?

 What places can he visit?

 What type of festivals and celebrations can he attend?

 What is transportation like?

Don’t forget to:

 Include a photo of your house and your family.

 Include ideas and vocabulary related to cultural literacy learned in the

study material. In the e-mail, underline the ideas included. Include at least 3
ideas.

 Use adjective clauses in the e-mail (at least 5 examples).

 Use connectors and punctuation.

Subject: Greetings and welcome to: ¡‟The World Famous Coffee Capital”!

Dear Matthew Mullins, I’m so excited to give you a warm welcome to my beloved country.
My name is Jesús Gustavo Rojas, my dad and i are so happy to share our home with you
for the next year.

I’m currently living alone with him, we know a few things about New Zealand and its
pacific environment, like the popular dance called “HAKA”; so, we wanna meet you to
share a cultural literacy among the three of us and know more about how’s your lifestyle
in one of the farest island of the world, that’s why we decide to enroll in this program.
Now, ¿you want to know much more about Colombia?

Ok then, first of all I'm gonna tell you about our people, they’re hardworking and kind,
and we've many rivers where you can swim pleasantly; tell me ¿did you know that
Colombia has Paramos which produce sweet water? It's quite interesting.

When you arrive, we’ll have a trek who’s going to be lead by a friend of mine and many
other things. Almost forgot this important data, we have several weather times, sunny,
cloudly and rainy, there is no snow, or yes, but it is in the Paramos, but the most common
weather is sunny.

You can go to Cartagena, Santa Marta, of course it’s preferable when the summer is in its
most heyday. Do you wish to visit the Carnivals? We have the "Black and White
Carnival" in the city of San Juan de Pasto, is very cold because is located over the Andes
mountain; you can use airplane or bus, even a motorcycle. I expect you to come as soon as
possible.

Cordially : Jesús Gustavo Rojas Herrera
