EDITOR’S NOTE

Step Up Your Game

Buying and selling used equipment. That’s the name of the game.

In an industry built, literally, by machinery, companies must have the correct inventory to do the job.

Successful used equipment trading is an invaluable skill set that should not be underestimated.

Whether you’re looking to buy, sell, or auction used equipment, knowledge of the market and the
procedures involved are essential for a solid return-on-investment. To help with this process,
Steel Giant Construction Marketplace, operated by Pile Buck, worked with equipment sales
representatives, consultants and retired contractors, who’s combined industry experience total
over 100 years, to develop a guide.

This guide is for you, so take a look and step up your game.

VALENTINE CORPORATION IS COMPLETING

$15 MILLION DOLLAR FIBER REINFORCED

HISTORICAL PIER 3 IN THE EMBARCADERO
WATERFRONT HISTORICAL DISTRICT
San Francisco, CA
Job: Pier 3 Structure Repairs

Owner: Hornblower Cruises and Events

(Completing work for the Port of
San Francisco)

Location: Pier 3, San Francisco

Start Date: October 2013 to Ongoing

DESCRIPTION
Many of the historic finger piers
along the San Francisco waterfront are
nearing the end of their useful life. The
sub-structures that hold up the piers —
made from concrete, rebar and timber
— have been exposed to (in many cases)
over one hundred years of sea water
corrosion and tidal activity. While some
historic piers have been lost forever, New York and Niagara Falls. The FRP system offers significant

Embarcadero Waterfront Historic
District. As a result, all repairs had
to be found to be consistent with the
Secretary of Interior Guidelines and
not conflict with the design integrity of
the pier. Pier 3 is the home port for the
Northern California fleet of passenger
excursion vessels — M/V California,
M/V Spirit, M/V San Francisco Belle,
and its corporate office on the historic
Santa Rosa ferryboat.
Joe Wyman with Hornblower Crusies
and Events remarked “Valentine was
brought on to the job as a subcontrac-
tor … after the original subcontractor
bowed out. It was quickly evident that
the crew from Valentine knew how the
work should be scheduled to be more
efficient and quickly implemented.
Valentine’s on site management was
always very responsive to any requests
from the Hornblower crew to minimize
the impacts of their work on the on-
going use of Pier 3 as an excursion vessel
terminal. Hornblower continued to op-
erate its three (3) largest excursion ves-
sels from Pier 3 throughout all phases
of construction by Valentine. On-going
operations at the Pier indicate that over
175,000 passengers enjoyed Hornblower
while Valentine worked on the pier.
Valentine has always shown great
flexibility and innovative solutions for
the various deteriorated conditions
on the Pier. Work entailed concrete
restoration on 80,000 SF on a pier that
is on the National Register of Historic
places. Restoration work focused on
removal of deteriorated concrete and
rebar and rebuilding the substructure
elements. A composite wrap was also
used to strengthen and restore the load
carrying capability of the Pier.”
The result is a renewed Pier 3, the
repaired areas of the substructure are
impervious to sea water damage and
further corrosion.
The major components of this project
consist of repairing more than 500 piles
(out of 987), 16,000 SF of deck (soffit)
repair (out of 80,000 SF), 4800 LF of
girder repair (out of 6804 LF), and 4500
LF of beam repair (out of 87750 LF). All
of this work was and is being completed
during low tides on a project specific
scaffolding system under Pier 3.

PILE BUCK’S INTERVIEW WITH

JOHN R. WOLOSICK, P.E., D.G.E.
Director of Engineering at Hayward Baker Inc.
and President of the Deep Foundations Institute
John Wolosick is the director of engineering for the Atlanta office of Hayward Baker Inc.
(HBI), where he is responsible for engineering design and business development support for
HBI offices nationwide.
With over 35 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and contracting, Wolosick
specializes in slope stabilization, support of excavation, soil nailing, micro pile foundations
including underpinning, and all types of grouting.
He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in civil engineering from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is a registered professional engineer in 10
Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states.
As an active member of the industry, he is the author of more than 35 technical papers, and was
the recipient of the 2008 ASCE/Geo-Institute Martin S. Kapp Foundation Engineering Award.
Currently, Wolosick serves as a member of the ASCE Earth Retaining Structures Committee.
He is a currently president of the the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) past vice president and
trustee of the DFI, co-chair of the ADSC/DFI Micro Pile Committee (2004–2007), and chair of
the ASCE/Geo-Institute of Georgia Geotechnical Committee (2003–2005).

where I have resided ever since.

PB: What was your progression from your

starting job at Law Engineering to director
of engineering at Hayward Baker Inc.?
JW: I worked for Law Engineering for about six years and
then a small business that some friends of mine and I put to-
gether for about a year and a half. My best client at that time
was Nicholson Construction Company and I ended up going
to work for them in 1987. I worked there for nine and a half
years and then joined Hayward Baker in 1996. I’ve been there
for about 19 years now.

PB: How did you achieve your present position at HBI?

JW: I built a lot of good experience over time at Law and
Nicholson. I was interested in design of earth retaining
structures which I studied in graduate school. In the late 80s,
micropiles came around.
Nicholson did a lot of micropile work because they were
able to use a lot of the equipment we used for tie back anchors
so it was a natural follow-through with the equipment we
were using to install tension foundations to start installing
compression foundations.
At that time, I worked with John Clark, vice president
at Nicholson, and Seth Pearlman. We had some really
interesting micropile work that started out with bridge
repair for the Maryland Department of Transportation in
Pocomoke City, Maryland.
We went on to do some challenging and exciting micro-
pile work around the Washington, D.C. area. One was the

Bernstein Building. It was part of the Inner Harbor develop-

Subway line development for the Baltimore Metro. There was
the Postal Square Building project which houses the National
Postal Museum in Washington D.C. next to the capital. Those
were exciting and fun micropile projects when micropiles
were just getting started.

PB: What is the company culture like at

Hayward Baker? Their posters creatively show
the integration of the earth, foundation projects
and environment which is fascinating.
JW: I would say our company has a unique culture. Primarily,
it is a culture of having fun-at-work, integrated with good
business sense and putting decisions down to the lowest level.
We are a very flat company. We allow young people to
make important decisions and empower them to do such. We
are professional but laid back.
If you’re not having fun at work you need to get a different job.
We plan a lot of social events. We do a lot of internal training for
young people. We have a very unique project manager’s confer-
ence every two years that has been going on for decades now.

The trash rack brackets were
designed by TMPSJ and the corporate-

Techno Metal Post.
The fabrication of both structures
required TMPSJ to employ three
separate metal fabrication companies,
in addition to its in-house fabrication
abilities, to have all the required pieces
produced on-time and on-budget.
In addition to the brackets and
support structures, TMPSJ mobilized
the required equipment and materials
for the deep foundation portion of
the project.
The RCP support system is a gravity-
support pipe slide with helical piers for
the foundation.
The slides were comprised of a steel
beam spanning two helical piers and
a curved steel plate that was rolled to
match the radius of the RCP.
The helical piers, beam and support
plate sizes were based on the combined
weights of the RCP, the valves and the
water weight of an entirely filled pipe.

NEW UNIBAR CENTRALIZERS FOR TENDON

AND REBAR ALIGNMENT AND SUPPORT
Pieresearch, Arlington, Texas has long been known
as a leading manufacturer and distributor of centralizer
spacers for reinforcing cage alignment in drilled shaft
foundation construction. The company has just made
available a new revolutionary centralizer for use with
tendon and rebar elements for earth support systems. To
achieve proper design strength in any drilled and grouted
hole the tendon or rebar anchor material must be centered
in the hole to allow minimum coverage throughout the
length of the element.
Made of durable, non-corrosive plastic this new, easily in-
stalled, light weight and economical centralizer contributes

to the quality control of the construction process. The Unibar

centralizer consists of two identical halves that are fast and
easy to snap together. No nuts or bolts are required. They
can be attached with zip ties or tie wire. The centralizer will
accommodate single-bar, mulit-bar, standard strand, or en-
capsulated (DCP) anchors, and can be used for steel or plastic
pipe applications. Unibar centralizers are ideal for soil nails,
rock and soil anchors, micropiles, and auger-cast piles with
single tension bars.

SUSTAINABILITY AND FOUNDATIONS:

A WIN-WIN SITUATION
When the topic of sustainability is raised it is often seen as politicized issue that
does not deserve a lot of attention. And some of you may have thought just that
when you saw the title of this article. But when you think of this term as it was
defined by the Brundtland Commission more than 30 years ago (“development
that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs”) sustainability makes perfect sense. The
objective is simply to allow future generations to live their lives on this earth.

In 2010, the firm was purchased by Langan. She says Lan-

Langan’s core values are technical excellence, practical

SINK AND TILT:

SAN FRANCISCO’S TALLEST
RESIDENTIAL TOWER

T
Tower in San Francisco was
once praised by the concrete
and engineering communi-
ties. Today, the city’s tallest
residential tower stands as a
cautionary tale.
Since its completion nearly eight
years ago, the south of Market Street
(SoMa) tower has sunk 16 inches and
tilted at its base by at least two inches
to the northwest.
For perspective, up to six inches of
settling during the life of a structure is
considered normal.
“It’s not an eminent danger, but is
obviously an eyebrow raising amount
of settlement,” said Patrick Otellini,
chief resilience officer with the city of
San Francisco, adding the tower was
designed above code minimum.
The massive concrete structure was
built on unconsolidated man-made fill
that was once submerged, San Fran-
cisco shoreline.
Because of this, the soil at the site is
highly susceptibility to liquefaction and
saturation, which leads to instability.
Put a heavy structure on unstable soil
and various amount of settlement can
occur, depending partially on how the
building is anchored.
The builder-owner, who likely knew
this, still opted to anchor the building
with 80-foot-deep piles, which went
through mud-fill and dense sand,
rather than with 200-foot-deep piles
into bedrock.

SLING SAFETY:
Proper Selection and Maintenance
INTRODUCTION
The ability to handle materials — to
move them from one location to an-
other, whether during transit or at the
worksite — is vital to all segments of
industry. Materials must be moved, for
example, for industry to manufacture,
sell, and utilize products. In short,
without materials-handling capability,
industry would cease to exist.
To varying degrees, all employees
in numerous workplaces take part in
materials handling. Consequently,
some employees are injured. In fact,
the mishandling of materials is the
single largest cause of accidents and
injuries in the workplace. Most of
these accidents and injuries, as well as
the pain and loss of salary and produc-
tivity that often result, can be readily
avoided. Whenever possible, mechani-
cal means should be used to move ma-
terials to avoid employee injuries such
as muscle pulls, strains, and sprains.
In addition, many loads are too heavy
and/or bulky to be safely moved
manually. Various types of equipment,
therefore, have been designed specifi-
cally to aid in the movement of materi-
als: cranes, derricks, hoists, powered
industrial trucks, and conveyors.
Because cranes, derricks, and
hoists rely upon slings to hold their
suspended loads, slings are the most
commonly used materials handling
apparatus. This booklet offers
information on the proper selection,
maintenance, and use of slings.

SLING TYPES

The dominant characteristics of a

sling are determined by the compo-
nents of that sling. For example, the
strengths and weaknesses of a wire
rope sling are essentially the same as
the strengths and weaknesses of the
wire rope of which it is made.
Slings are generally one of six types:
chain, wire rope, metal mesh, natural
fiber rope, synthetic fiber rope, or
synthetic web. In general, use and in-
spection procedures tend to place these
slings into three groups: chain, wire
rope and mesh, and fiber rope web.
Each type has its own particular ad-
vantages and disadvantages. Factors to
consider when choosing the best sling
for the job include the size, weight,
shape, temperature, and sensitivity of
the material to be moved, as well as the

by the “lay.” The lay of a wire rope
describes the direction the wires and
strands are twisted during the con-
struction of the rope. Most wire rope
is right lay, regular lay-which means
that the strands pass from left to right
across the rope and the wires in the
rope are laid opposite in direction to
the lay of the strands. This type of rope
has the widest range of applications.
Lang lay (where the wires are twist-
ed in the same direction as the strands)
is recommended for many excavating,
construction, and mining applications,
including draglines, hoist lines, dredge-
lines, and other similar lines.
Lang lay ropes are more flexible and
have greater wearing surface per wire
than regular lay ropes. In addition,
since the outside wires in lang lay rope
lie at an angle to the rope axis, internal

CHECK YOURSELF: TIPS FOR BUYING

AND SELLING USED HEAVY EQUIPMENT
Brought to you by SteelGiantMarket.com — List your
construction equipment, materials, and services for free.

Contractors who maintain sizable fleets of heavy equipment are routinely in recycle mode.
Spanning a set period of time, these firms sell older or lesser-used machines, frequently
replacing them with newer or refurbished used equipment.
This simultaneous involvement in the resale market requires a significant financial, time
and resource commitment on the part of a contractor, which inflates the importance of
research, preparation, transparency and inspections during the buy-sell process.
