Hard Working Helicopter Heroes

Chop, Chick, Chak, a helicopter flies in to save a dangling climber on the side of the

29,035 foot mountain known as Mount Everest (Source 2). Mount Everest the world's tallest

mountain has been scaled by nearly 4000 people (Source 2). Its climbing season with the

perfect conditions to ascend up the mountain alone, but over 230 people fell victim to this

dangerous place and many more are in need of rescuing (Source 1,2). This spikes the question

do people deserve the right to rescue services, if putting themselves at risk. I feel that they

shouldn’t have the right because it takes a lot of effort and money, people are careless, and its

dangerous.

Starting off, it’s not right for people to have the right to rescue services because it takes

a great deal of money and effort for the rescuers to actually rescue. “You know, the skills that

are required to operate these machines are quite significant and, you know, the margin for error

is very small. ” (Source 1) The effort it takes for people to learn how to properly use these

helicopters probably years and years and all of that time just wasted because they made a

simple error. It’s probably a really stressful job knowing that one mistake could change so much.

Also, According to Source 1 Heil states that each B3 helicopter cost around 2 million apiece and

to keep them operating, functioning and paying the bills, has you putting out a lot of money. See

people are also putting so much money down the drain if one of these is damaged or destroyed

during an operation its money wasted and if they don't make profit it's only a negative impact for

the rescue team.

Secondly, the option of rescue services should not be given to people because people

are careless when it comes to climbing the mountain. “Nobody doubts their strength and fitness,

but they may not know enough about mountaineering and the hazards the high altitudes

present.” (Source 2) The rescuers should not be at blame if anything happens because they put

themselves there in the first place. People should not need rescuing if they come prepared

enough. Furthermore, In source 1 Heil and Siegel express that helicopters are no longer last

resort options because of new advances in their overall system. People should not be relying on

the fact that helicopters and rescuers are going to instantly be there. Yeah it's an option but

some people use these as a way to not worry about the danger resulting in fatalities and more

pressure on the pilots and rescuers.

In addition people should not have the right to rescuers because it's dangerous for the

climber and rescuer. According to source 1, the helicopter could only take one passenger out of

two, and it ended up saving one but crashed saving the other. In a case like this 2 people died

for 1 person and can we really afford to have something like this happen again. In addition,

source 3 portrays “As hall, 34, was preparing some of the climbers for helicopter evacuation at

4:59 pm, he fell down the mountains northeast side from the 13,700 foot level. Climbers

reached him hours later and confirmed he had died.” Rescuing is very dangerous and when

people do things and need rescuing they put rescuers in danger and unfortunately for this one it

costed him his life.

On the other hand, many people also say that its profitable for rescue services to save

people. Source 1 states that the opportunities to do anything from flying people and supplies in

and out makes a profit and the increased use of helicopters helps. How much money is going to

be made if you end up dying or if you damage the aircraft? You could possibly lose money for

repair bills or hospital bills. Also, people claim the talent would be wasted and it's their job to

save people. Again, if they die they lose their job and their talent. If their job is to save people it

can’t be right that they cannot be able to save themselves.

In conclusion, it takes a considerable amount of money and effort to do rescue

operations. Furthermore, People become careless when they know that rescuers can come

whenever and wherever. Finally, it’s dangerous for both the climber and the rescuer. These are

some of the many reasons why people shouldn’t have the right to rescue services when putting

themselves at risk. The overarching idea is that lives can be lost and people take advantage of

rescues services when they shouldn’t. We need to be thankful for those who come out everyday

not only saving us from mountain sides but from fires, diseases, and the many dangers that

come from living on this world.
