Figure 1 shows that the majority of the students being surveyed have a high
difficulties in using English in their activity. They thought that the difficulties in using
English was in understanding the meaning of some idiom. It could be difficult in the level of
difficulty in language term. Also, the students have trouble in understanding lengthy
descriptions in English, understanding the new vocabulary, and pronounce some words in
English. The students were chosen the answer based on their experience which means those
the answers were the most difficult situation they have passed. This result may become the
researcher consideration in developing syllabus. The researcher may found some idea based
on the result of the survey in term of students’ difficulty. In addition, the syllabus and
material will provide in this English course may selected considering students’ needs.

In figure 2 presents the result of expected skill in English based on students’ needs. In
the graphic above, it shows that most voted options was in reading skill. Some students also
choose speaking, listening, and writing for expected skill in English. The majority of students
need to master reading skill in their major. This result could be as the researcher
consideration to develop the material in the course. The other skills also needed to fulfill
students’ wants in their learning process. Therefore, reading skill and speaking skill as two
the most choosen option will be given more to strengthen students’ needs.

Within the questionnaire regarding to the most difficult skill to be mastery by the
students, four skills are provided based on students’ needs. The majority of students mention
that the most difficult skill to be mastery is in speaking skill and continued by listening and
writing skills. As a result, the development of syllabus and material will provide more
enrichment exercise/activities to help students strengthen those skills especially in speaking
skill.
