Tenses Present

1. Simple Present Tense

Subject + verb (1) + object

a. To express habitual action

he smokes ; birds fly ; dogs bark

Ex.: I work 8 hours a day . I work from 9 o’clok to 5 pm .

She does her assignment at home

They go to university at 7 o’clock

I do my job well

I do

past --------------------------------------------------------------------------- future

Time expressions of Present Tense :


- every day /week /year ….

- at night , in the morning , on Mondays , on Friday , in June etc .

Adverb of Frequency :

-Simple Present Tense often used with adverb or adverb phrases : always , generally, often, ussually,
sometimes , never, always, occasiolly ,seldom, rarely , twice a year, evey week etc .

How to make –S form from Verb 1 (first form of verb)

1. most verbs

read à reads ; stay à stays

need à needs ; buy -> buys

2. Verbs end in y following a consonant dropped y add ies

study -> studies ; fly -> flies

carry -> carries ; cry -> cries


3. Verbs end in o , ss, sh, ch, x add es

do -> does ; goà goes ; discuss à discusses; kiss à kisses ;

push à pushes ; crash à crashes ; touch à touches ;

watch à watches ; fix à fixes ; vex àvexes; hoax à hoaxes .

Affirmative /Positive Negative:

S + V 1 + O/C S +( do/does + not + Verb) + O/C

I work I do not work

She writes … She does not write

Interrogative Negative Interrogative

Auxiliary + S + V … ? Auxiliary + S + not + V ….?

Do I work ? Do I not work ? (Don’t I work ..? )

Does she write ? Does she not write ? (Doesn’t she work .? )

• Short conversation use Present Tense : AT UNIVERSITY

• A. Good morning . How are you this morning ? .

• B. I’m fine , thanks . And how are you ?

• A. Fine , thanks . Are you a student ? .

• B. Yes, I am . You’re a student too , aren’t you ?

• A. Yes, my name is ….. ( say second name )

• B. What’s your first name ?

• A. My first name is ………( First name name of A ) . My name is …….. (full name )

• B. Very glad to meet You…. (name of A ) . My name is ……. ( firt name B )

• A. What’s your last name , ……( name of B) ?

• B. My last name is ……….. . My name is ……………. ( full name of B) .


• A. How do you spell your last name ?
