Magnetic Couplings Introduction

The GMDO is a permanent magnet coupling designed to transmit torque using the magnetic field that is established between the inner and outer rotor without
mechanical contact between shafts.

The use of magnetic coupling is recommended in applications where it is necessary to hermetically separate two zones in order to prevent fluid or gas leakage
from one area to another. The classic example is fluid transfer pump applications. In these applications the fluid must not come into contact with the external
environment.

These magnetic couplings also prevent transmission of vibration and axial and radial loads through the drive shaft.

internal coupling half

The magnetic coupling is a synchronous system therefore the rpm of the internal half of the coupling is equal to the rpm of the external half of the coupling.

Principles of operation.
The magnetic coupling works by using the power generated by permanent magnets.

No external power supply is needed. These are permanent magnets not electro magnets.

The magnets are installed alternating between poles in a side by side and opposing position as seen in the diagram.
The main body of each coupling half is of ferromagnetic material to aid the channelling of the magnetic field correctly and therefore maximizing
transmittable torque.

Magnetic Couplngs Introduction

Main components of a permanent magnetic coupling.

Magnetic couplings capable of transmitting torque from 3 to 600 Nm, without mechanical contact between two shafts through magnetic forces that are
established between the internal and external rotor. The magnetic coupling is ideal for applications where prevention of leakage from the pump is essential.
Magnetic couplings also prevent vibrations and, radial and axial loads to the pump shaft. The magnetic coupling is a synchronous system with a primary
function of hermetically separating two areas.

Benefits

No fluid leakage - therefore no contamination or waste of expensive fluids.

No maintenance on the shaft seals - saving time and money.
No vibration - coupling damps mechanical vibrations which inturn lowers noise pollution.
No alignment problems - Assembly negates possibility of errors.
Two completely separate zones - transmit torque between 2 isolated areas. There is no physical mechanical connection between the drive and driven shaft.
Torque limited safety feature - correctly specified magnetic coupling will not exceed specified torque value therefore preventing damage from possible
torque overload. Should the torque exceed maximum design value the coupling will slip so ceasing transmission. Bring the coupling to a complete stop and
the magnets will reposition automatically (S-N ; N-S) and transmission can continue by restarting.

Magnetic Couplngs Data Required for Specification

Technical data required to specify correct coupling size

There is minor power loss using the GMDO magnetic coupling. There are three reason for this; eddy currents, magnetic hysteresis and hydrodynamic
resistance. The eddy current and the magnetic hysteresis is only a minimal part of this power absorption. The third consideration, the resistence,
depends on the medium used within the pump, and from the moment when the internal rotor is immersed in the medium. Therefore it is important to
establish the viscosity of the medium and the operational speed to determine the main power of the magnetic coupling.

Containment Shroud made of reinforced technopolymer

Containment shrouds made of metal have two main problems:

» create energy losses

» create heat

Containment shrouds made of reinforced technopolymer solves these two problems. This cures the energy losses caused by the rotational magnetic
field. Furthermore, this solution does not generate any temperature increase even if the containment shroud is empty (dry).
This solution is also interchangeable with our stainless steel model.
Containment Shroud GR 2

Containment Shroud GR 0

If the reinforced technopolymer containment shroud cannot be used due to pressure it is possible to reduce the temperature using a full flow concept
design.

Magnetic Couplngs Operating Performance

Pressure inside containment shroud

A maximum static pressure of 15 bar is allowed in the inside of the containment shroud, or a maximum pulsating pressure of 5 bar. These two values
are relative values to the ambient pressure of the coupling location. Higher operating pressures are available on request.

Operational speed

The max. operational speed of the GMDO coupling is 3600 rpm.

Operating temperature

The maximum operating temperature is 120°C. Increased temperature results in torque reduction. The diagrams below show the coupling ability is
directly effected by operational temperature. One diagram with the magnets in Neodymium (Ne) and the other with magnets in Samarium-Cobalt

Magnetic Couplngs Operating Performance

Power

Part of the power transmitted by the electric motor is absorbed by the magnetic coupling due to three different reasons : eddy current, magnetic
hysteresis and hydrodynamic resistance. Therefore is essential to know the fluid viscosity and the rpm in order to determine the magnetic coupling total
efficiency.
