Black Therapists Rock: A Glimpse Through the Eyes of Experts seeks to end the mental health
stigma in Black communities. Since trauma is healed better collectively, each author shares
personal accounts of depression, abuse, grief, and other forms of trauma that is often ignored in the
community. The authors’ vulnerability gives hope to people with similar experiences. Nicole’s
chapter reveals childhood memories of her mom’s depression that ended with her lifeless body lying
next to her at age 8.

Nicole Thompson, The Urban School Psychologist, is a certified school psychologist, educator, author,
public speaker, and mentor to urban youth. She is a Philadelphia native and a product of the environment
that she is so passionate about serving. She is the creator of Reverse the Adverse, a trauma-informed care
training specifically designed for educators and mental health professionals that work with school-aged
urban students (grades K-12). The goal of Reverse the Adverse is to raise awareness of the impact that
adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma have on urban students, and provide strategies to
better serve such a vulnerable population.

Nicole speaks at conferences nationwide and received a standing ovation when she delivered her talk,
Strategies to Better Serve Urban Students, at the Harvard School Mental Health Conference. She is
passionate about serving urban students and the courageous educators and mental health professionals
that work with those students.
