1. (a) (i) How are intrinsic and extrinsic semi conductors different?
(ii) Explain briefly how an extrinsic semiconductor is made.

(b) When a transistor is connected into a circuit to determine the


characteristic curve, the following results are obtained.

(i) Plot the graph of I c against I b .


(ii) Draw the best straight line through the points.
(iii) Calculate the slope.
(iv) What property of a transistor does its slope represent?

2. (a) Define the following and give one use of each:


(i) Capacitor
(ii) Diode
(b)

Use the sketch above (Fig. 1) to answer the following:


(i) What does each symbol represent?
(ii) What type of a device does the sketch represent?
(iii) Write down the current relation for the device.
(iv) Give two common uses of the device.
(c) Draw a sketch circuit for voltage amplification and name the
different components used.
3. (a) Explain how p-type and N-type semi conductors are constructed?
(b) Describe the mode of action and application of PN junction diode.
(c) The diagram below (Fig. 1) shows a circuit in which important
components A and B are removed.

(c) Draw the circuit diagram of the full wave rectifier using only two
diodes.
5. (a) Explain briefly the principle of Transistor
(b) Using block diagrams for n p n transistor show how a transistor can
be used in a simple circuit as:
(i) an amplifier.
(ii) a switch.
6. (a) What are the differences between a conductor, semiconductor and
an insulator in terms of their energy levels?
(b) (i) What is the difference between PNP and NPN transistors?
(ii) Draw their circuit symbols, label them and describe each
connection.
(c) Sketch a well labelled diagram of a full PNP stabilized common
emitter amplifier circuit. Indicate the components responsible for
potential dividers and temperature stabilizer.
