1. (a) Define an orthogonal linear operator and show that a linear operator T on IRn is orthogonal (6)
if and only if it preserves lengths of vector.
(b) Let m be an isometry of the plane. Show that m = Tv ρθ for a uniquely determined vector (6)
v and an angle θ.
(c) (i) Show that an n × n matrix A is orthogonal if and only if its columns forms an or- (3)
thonormal basis of IRn .
(ii) Define Hyperplane in R3 and find the equation of Hyperplane passing through the (3)
points (3, 2, −1), (1, 1, 6) and (4, −2, 0).

2. (a) Let γ(t) be a regular curve in IR3 with nowhere vanishing curvature. Then show that (6)

3. (a) If f : U −→ IR is a differentiable function in an open set U of IR2 then show that the (6)
subset of IR3 given by (x, y, f (x, y)) for (x, y) ∈ U is a regular surface.
(b) Let S = {(x, y, z) ∈ R3 : x2 + y 2 + z 2 = 1}. Can S be covered by two coordinate (6)
neighborhoods whose intersection is connected. Is S regular surface?. Justify your answer.
(c) (i) Let σ : U → IR3 be a patch of a surface S containing a point p of S and (u, v) be (3)
co-ordinates in U . Then show that the tangent space to S at p is the vector subspace
of IR3 spanned by the vectors σu and σv .
(ii) Prove that the hyperboloid of 2−sheets z 2 = 1 + x2 + y 2 is a regular surface. (3)

4. (a) Define an isometry for surfaces. Show that an isometry between two surfaces takes the (6)
geodesics of one surface to the geodesics of the other.
(b) Calculate Gaussian curvature, Mean curvature and Principal curvature of the surface (6)

(c) Let σ(u, v) = (ucosv, usinv, u) where u = eλt , v = t and λ is constant. Find the length of (3)
part of the curve with 0 ≤ t ≤ π.
(d) Let the surface S defined by smooth function f (x, y, z) = 0. Show that the vector (3)
Of = (fx , fy , fz ) is perpendicular to the tangent plane at every point of S. whether S
is orientable? Justify.
(e) Is the map from the circular half-cone x2 + y 2 = z 2 , z > 0 to the xy plane given by (3)
(x, y, z) 7→ (x, y, 0) an isometry? Justify your answer.
