Design Of Pile Cap

Inputs
Column/wall Length(X dim.) = 500 mm
Column/Wall Width(Y dim.) = 500 mm
Axial Load = 2000 KN
Mx = 300 KNm
No. of piles = 9 (Friction piles)
Dia. Of each pile = 250 mm
Concrete grade = M20
Steel grade = Fe415
No. of rows in x direction(m) = 3
No. of rows in y direction(n) = 3
Assumed overhange = 150 mm

Analysis and Design

1) Pile Cap dimensions

L = B = 2S + D + 2 x Assumed overhang of150mm

S is the spacing of piles. Which can be fixed such that the group efficiency is 100%

100 = (2(m + n - 2)S + 4D)*100/(pi() * D * mn)

S = (pi() D mn - 4D)/(2(m + n -2)) > Smin

Smin = 3d or 900 which ever is mpre

= 900 mm

S = 758.5729 mm should be > smin

Therefore, S = 900 mm

L=B = 2350 mm

2) Depth of pile cap

a) Depth of pile cap based on moment criteria

BD2 = Muy,max/(0.36fck(xu/d)(1-0.416xu/d))

Where, Muy = Maximum ultimate moment at the face bc about y axis

= (Puc1 + Puc2 + Puc3)(S - L)/2

Where, Puc1, Puc2 and Puc3 are the ultimate reaction from Piles Pc1, Pc2 and Pc3
= Load factor x ((column/wall load P + assumed self weight of 0.1P of pile cap)/ number of piles) + MuyYc/ Σyc2)

Load factor = 1.5

Therefore Puc1, Puc2 and Puc3

= 450 KN

Therefore, Muy, max = 877.5 KNm

Xu/d = 0.479 for steel grade of Fe415

Therefore, for calculating D

BD2 = 3.18E+08
D 2
= 135214.1
and D = 367.7147 mm

b) Depth of pile cap based on shear criteria

From, Vu,max = τuc bd

d = Vumax/τuc b

Vumax = Puc1 + Puc2 + Puc3

1350 KN

τuc = 0.36 N/mm2 (Min. value for considered grade of concrete)

d = 1595.745 mm

Consider D = 675 mm
d = 625 mm

3) Design for moment

Area of steel for max. ultimate moment at the face of column/wall about x and y axis
Mux,max = (Pua1 + Pub1 + Puc1)*(S-b)/2

Where, Pua1 = 1.5 x ((Column/wall load P + assumed selfweight of 0.1P of pile cap) number of piles) + Muy X /Σx2

Pua1 = 283.3333 KN
Similarly,
Pub1 = 366.6667 KN
Puc1 = 450 KN
Mux,max = 715 KNm

4) Design for shear
