There was a time when I thought
the anti-abortion people were just a
little too cute in calling themselves
“pro-life”. I don’t think that any
longer. I’ve come to the conclusion
that it was precisely the right term
to use. At least it’s the right term for
Christians to use because the real
issue is much bigger than abortion.
To some degree the issue is clouded
by the terminology. For example,
“choice” is not the opposite of “life”,
as in “pro-choice” versus “pro-life”.
The opposite of life…is death. There’s
a passage where God told Moses to
pass on to Israel a statement about
this. “This day I call the heavens and
the earth as witnesses against you
that I have set before you life and
death, blessings and curses. Now
choose life, so that you and your
children may live” (Deuteronomy
30:19).
I think that it’s important that the
words “and your children” were
included here because it’s always
the children who suffer first. So this
choice of life has first to do with
children.
You know, I think it may turn out
that Roe v. Wade was only the
opening salvo in a much bigger war.
Now, there’s an absurdity begging to
be noticed in the expression “pro-
choice”, and let me see if I can clarify
the issue before we go on. The one
side of the abortion debate wants the
choice of life or death to belong to
the woman carrying the child.
What started me thinking down this
line was an article a friend sent me. It
was last December, when syndicated
columnist Mark Steyn had the birth
of Jesus on his mind. He wrote:
The birth of a child. On the one
hand, what could be more powerless
than a newborn babe? On the other,
without a newborn babe, man is
ultimately powerless. For, without
new life, there can be no civilization,
no society, no nothing. Even if it’s
superstitious mumbo-jumbo, the
decision to root Christ’s divinity in
the miracle of His birth expresses
a profound—and rational—truth
about “eternal life” here on earth.
This is a profound observation.
Without a newborn babe, without
new life, he says, there can be
“nothing”.
All this stuff goes way beyond Roe
v. Wade and abortion. The opposite
of pro-life is indeed anti-life, as
strange…as insane as that idea may
seem. Where is all this coming from?
Is it the bitter fruits of education, as
children are taken from the home
and brought up in a godless school
system? Is society becoming not
merely secular, but anti-Christian,
anti-Judaism, anti-life? In fact, I
think “secular” may not be the right
term for this at all.

◆Pray daily for those who’s lives are
not valued: the unborn, the elderly,
the disabled.
◆Public prayer with groups near
abortion facilities.
◆Know what alternatives are available
to women other than abortion.
◆Speak gently to those you meet
who are considering or have had an
abortion—share the love and hope
that Jesus Christ brings into our lives.
◆Support those agencies that provide
pre-natal care, parent training,
diapers, clothing and so much more
to those who choose life.
◆Vote for candidates for public office
who are pro-life.

“Secular” means not religious,
sacred, or spiritual. It is a neutral
idea. But this isn’t neutral. “Secular”
doesn’t go far enough, because
the spirit at work in the world is
anti-religious. No, no it’s not anti-
religious, it’s anti-Christian. And as
I wrote those notes on this page, I
said to myself, “What am I saying?
Am I talking about the Antichrist?”
The only author in the Bible who
talks about “antichrist” is John. No
one else ever mentions it, but John is
profoundly concerned about it. He
wrote in his first epistle, “Beloved,
believe not every spirit, but try the
spirits whether they are of God:
because many false prophets are gone
out into the world. Hereby know ye
the Spirit of God: Every spirit that
confesseth that Jesus Christ is come
in the flesh is of God: and every spirit

that confesseth not that Jesus Christ
is come in the flesh is not of God:
and this is that spirit of antichrist,
whereof ye have heard that it should
come; and even now already is it in
the world” (1 John 4:1–3).
What John was seeing in his day
was very different than what we’re
seeing today, and yet the spirit
behind it appears to be the same.
Jesus, you know, came into this
world as a babe—alive, breathing,
crying, sucking at his mother’s
breast, and totally vulnerable. And
the spirit of antichrist in the person
of one evil King Herod killed all the
babies around Bethlehem, trying to
destroy the Christ-child. When you
think about it, it should come as no
surprise that the spirit of anti-Christ
would be anti-life. And we know
that this spirit has been at work from
the start.
Paul wrote “As for you, you were
dead in your transgressions and
sins, in which you used to live when
you followed the ways of this world
and of the ruler of the kingdom
of the air, the spirit who is now at
work in those who are disobedient”
(Ephesians 2:1–2).
It’s John who introduces us to the idea
of antichrist. It is John who produces
the most articulate explanation of
the issues of life and of death, but it
was Paul who spoke of a spirit that
was “at work” in the world.
John wrote: “In the beginning was
the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. The
same was in the beginning with
God. All things were made by him;
and without him was not any thing
made that was made. In him was
life; and the life was the light of men.
And the light shineth in darkness; of every kind. Trying to get rid of

It’s disturbing to me how many
Christians who not only hate abortion
with a passion, but anyone who has had,
or works in the abortion industry. This
hate is on the faces of those protesting
outside the abortion facilities, in the
judgmental glares of congregants, and
of all places on the contorted faces of
ministers pounding the pulpit while
preaching to their flock. Please show
me in the Bible where it commands
us to hate. I’ll save you some time;
it’s not in there. Albeit in Luke 14:26
Jesus admonishes, “If any man come
to me, and hate not his father, and
mother, and wife, and children, and
brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own
life also, he cannot be my disciple.”
Messiah is warning the multitudes
being addressed here of the cost of
discipleship, not to simply hate your
family. Actually, He is telling us all to
uphold His ways before anything else.
There are too many verses in the Bible
that speak out against hate to list, but
one that poignantly proves the point
is Proverbs 10:12, where Solomon
states: “Hatred stirreth up strifes: but
love covereth all sins.” Simply put, the
heart of the problem is the problem of
the heart.
If we were to take a minute to think
about abortion somewhere in America,
two women would have exercised their
court-protected right to terminate their
unborn child. This is over 3,000 babes

in just one day and a million human
beings a year, and this is just in the
United States. Worldwide, the number
of abortions since 1980 is over 1 billion
terminated births. These are human
beings we are talking about here and
human beings have rights. Not just
rights, but unalienable rights that are
endowed by our creator according to
the US Declaration of Independence.
It is logically consistent to afford these
same rights we enjoy to the unborn as
well. It’s as simple as that. These small
fragile members of the human family
need representation. To stand idly by
is unacceptable and unbiblical. We
read Peter saying in Acts 4:29, “And
now, Lord, behold their threatenings:
and grant unto thy servants, that with
all boldness they may speak thy word.”
The antecedents of “their” in this
passage are Herod, Annas, Caiaphas,
and other kindred supporters of
the Sadducees—the establishment
if you will. Peter is asking God to
help believers be bold and speak the
Word to the ones in charge.
We need to speak with boldness the
Word of God to those who are in office
and in positions that make life-altering
decisions. Boldness doesn’t mean to
be puffed up, obnoxious or hateful.
Mr. Dart said once that the only time
people seem to be in the sensible center
is on their way from one ditch to the
other. It’s no good to end up hating
these women and men who are a part
of these abortions. As the old cliché
goes, “Hate the sin, not the sinner.”
The latest CDC report states one in four
women have had an abortion. Chances
are you will encounter someone today
that has had an abortion, been a part
of an abortion, or has a family member
who has had an abortion. Next time
you are sitting at a business luncheon
or a PTA meeting, look around. They
are here. They are in pain. Jesus Christ
shows us what unprecedented love He
has with this prolific plea to the Father,
“forgive them; for they know not what
they do” (Luke 23:34).
Over 64% of women who have had
an abortion feel they were coerced by
their family, boyfriend, husband, or
friends. Imagine finding out you are
pregnant and the first words you hear
from your significant other isn’t “I’m
so happy! We are going to be parents!”
but “Are you sure? You need to get rid
of it.” Would you be resilient enough
to disregard the deadbeat dad, and
the equally unsupportive friends who
question your ability to raise this child
alone? If you make it to mom and
dad who urge you to abort instead of
shouting with joy at the prospect of
being grandparents, what would you
do? We naturally want to be protected,
supported, and loved. These people
might think they mean well, but the
truth of the matter is women who
have abortions rarely escape the ordeal
without severe trauma and usually
become haunted by the question,
“What if...?”
78% of women who had abortions
didn’t realize there are resources for
single mothers. 50% of women who
have abortions in the US are under 24
years old, some as young as 13 and 14.
These young ladies need to be lovingly
guided to resources that provide pre-
natal care, parenting classes, and
other options such as adoption in an
uncertain time where she might not
have the help of the father.
Very frequently the young men who
are all “yes” for sex become a hard
“no” for birth. Admittedly, there is
a much deeper and more sinister
problem with the family values
we’ve perpetuated that give rise to
these types of situations, but that’s a
topic for another article. We need to
consider how we, as Christians, are
handling these crisis pregnancies.
It’s clear in the Bible that infanticide is
an abomination to God (Jer. 19:5). The
sanctity of life should never be taken
for granted. We should be just as upset
as God is by the idea of abortion. In
fact, we should be so upset that we
do everything in our power to stop
it. From what I have read and heard,
the best ways to combat this evil is
through loving these women through
the mishap pregnancy. We have to
set aside being offended and take a
stand for these precious gifts from
God. There are many different ways
to support the pro-life movement, but
prayer is one of the most effective and
Christ like ways to upend this utter
anathema. Furthermore, organizations
like Coalition for Life and Operation
Rescue are great groups to contact to see
what you can do to combat this Jezebel
spirit in our country. CEM is also here
to counsel with anyone who might be
considering abortion.
The next time the topic of comes up,
assume the person you are speaking with
has been a part of an abortion and be
gentle with them. Look at how Christ
handled the rich young man who wasn’t
able to sell his riches (Mark 10:21). It
says he looked at him and loved
him. Look at these people and love
them. What you do next might be
the difference between life and death.

Sunday, June 9, 2019, marks one of the most important occasions in

the history of the Christian Church. It is the day of Pentecost, and it
is actually a lot older than the church. See Leviticus 23:15 21. Here
is a quick study of Pentecost, taken from our Christian Holy Days
Bible study, for you to review in preparation for observing this day.
1. Is this festival given a name (Exodus 34:22; Deuteronomy 16:9-10,
16)?
2. What do New Testament writers call it (Acts 2:1, 20:16)?
Note: “Pentecost” comes from the Greek and means “fiftieth,” a refer-
ence to the feast falling on the 50th day after the wave sheaf. The festival
is referred to variously as Pentecost, the Feast of Weeks, or the Feast of
Firstfruits. The seven intervening weeks are the weeks of grain harvest
in Palestine, beginning with the first ripe barley during the Days of
Unleavened Bread and finishing with the wheat harvest before Pente-
cost. Pentecost, then, is a harvest festival.
3. How did Jesus think of the harvest (symbolically) (Matt 9:36-38; John 4:35)?
4. When was the time of harvest (Matt 13:24-30, 36-43)?
5. Did the Feast of Pentecost take on special meaning for the New Testament
church (Acts 2:1-47)?
6. Was there an indication that a worldwide harvest was beginning (vv. 6-11)?
7. Was there a major “harvest” for the church on that day (Acts 2:41)?
Note: It would appear that the day of Pentecost itself looks forward
to the return of Christ and a massive pouring out of God’s Spirit. The
seven weeks of harvest thus would portray the harvest of souls taking
place in our age between Christ’s departure and his return to this earth.
