Verbos que terminan en “–ar”

A verb usually names the action in a sentence. We call the verb form that ends in –r (-ar,
-er, -ir) the infinitive. It is the form you would find in a Spanish dictionary. It means “to
_____.” Below are some of the infinitives you already know. These are called “-ar
verbs”.

ayudar nadar cocinar

-It is important that you remember the “subject pronouns” that we have previously
learned. These help indicate which form of the verb will be used according to the person
who is doing the action.

yo- nosotros-
tú- ellos/ellas-
él/ella/usted- ustedes-

--In Spanish, the last letter or letters of the verb tell you who does the action.

--To change an infinitive to a form that tells who is doing the action, remove the “-ar” and
add the appropriate ending.

él/ella/usted- a ustedes- an

An example:
Infinitive: estudiar- to study
