ENGINE START

NOTE: simultaneous engine starts are not permitted.

STARTING FIRST ENGINE (BATTERY OR EXTERNAL POWER SOURCE)

Starter switch: - Start
Ignition indicator light - ON
Oil pressure - Check positive indication.
Fuel pressure - Check positive indication.
Fuel condition lever - LO IDLE (after 12% Ng).
T5 (790° C cutoff) -Observe limit
Ignition indicator light - OFF (above 45% Ng)
Oil pressure - 40 psi minimum
Hydraulic pressure - Check

NOTE: Hi idle should be set in case of battery recharging (start without external power) and/or use of air
conditioning.

Air conditioning - as required for passenger comfort.

If the battery was used, is should be recharged as follows:

Corresponding generator – ON
Ammeter – wait until battery load is reduced to 100 A
or less before starting second engine.

NOTE: during engine stating the FUEL lights on the annunciator panel may come on, which is normal.
However, once the starting cycle has been completed, the lights should go off.
CAUTION
· If no positive oil pressure indication is obtained during starting or oil pressure less than 40 psi after Ng is stabilized at
low idle, immediately shut down the engine and investigate the cause.
· For increased oil service life an oil temperature between 74º C and 80º C is recommended. A minimum oil temperature
of 55º C is recommended for fuel heater operation at take-off power.
· The starting cycle is automatic and does not require subsequent action, provided the engine accelerates, and
reaches stabilized low idle speed. If the ignition indicator light does not turn off after 45% Ng, the starting switch
must be immediately positioned to INTERRUPTION in order to avoid starter damage, without the need for shutting
down the engine. Carefully observe the engine instruments and do not allow the T5 limit to be exceeded. Incase this
occurs, the value attained and time elapse in over temperature condition should be written down on the flight report
since it effects life between overhauls an, in certain cases, requires a compulsory inspection.
· Whenever there is no indication of engine ignition (Ng and T5 increases) within 10 seconds after having moved the
fuel condition lever to LO IDLE, move it back to CUT-OFF and position the starter switch to INTERRUPTION. Allow 30
seconds for fuel to drain, 3 minutes for starter to cool; then carry out a dry motoring run before attempting a new start.
Whenever a star is interrupted, the engine must be brought to a full shut down, followed by a dry motoring run. This
accomplished, repeat the starting sequence, observing starter limits.

NOTE:
ü Whenever possible, use external power source to start engines.
ü If battery voltage is below 20 v, the battery must be removed for maintenance.
ü If voltage is between 20 v and 23v, external power source must be used for starting.
ü If voltage is above 23 v, engines may be started using the aircraft battery, if
no external power source is available.

TO INTERRUPT STARTING

Fuel condition lever – FUEL CUT-OFF.

Starter switch – INTERRUPTION.

STARTING SECOND ENGINE

NOTE:
ü In case the first engine has been started using the aircraft battery, wait until ammeter
indication is 100A or less an maintain a minimum of 65% Ng to initiate the start of the
second engine. In this case, with the generator feeding the bus bar, cross start may be
performed, using the generator of the first engine to assist the battery in starting the
second engine.
ü On hot days and/or high altitude airports, it is recommended that Ng on the first engine be
maintained between 70 and 75% before initiating the cross start cycle to prevent the
possibility of T5 increase an Ng decrease on that engine.
ü In case engine start is made with an external power source, the start of the second engine
may be initiated as soon as the start of the first engine is completed.

Follow the same procedures for the first engine as applicable. Should air conditioning be desired, place
air conditioning master switch to GROUND position and selector on AUTO. Check that the AUTOMATIC
TRIP light is out.

ENGINE SHUT-DOWN

During taxi – observe T5

Caution
· Allow T5 to stabilize below 650ºF for one minute.

Parking braks – Set

Power levers – Min.
Propeller levers – FEATHER
Air conditioning master switch – OFF
Fuel condition levers – FUEL CUT-OFF

Caution
· During engine shut-down, make sure that the compressor speed (Ng) freely decelerates.

Switches (except battery and interior lights, if required),

radios, radar, automatic pilot, utility lights,
and nose wheel steering control – OFF.
Gyro Horizon and lighting emergency supply – OFF
Hydraulic booster pump – OFF
MAIN and AUX fuel pump switches – OFF (after 0% Ng)
Propeller levers – MAX RPM
Panels and interior lights – OFF
Generators – OFF
Battery master switch –OFF (after checking the left engine propeller
stopped).
Note: it is responsibility of the crew to avoid the exit of passengers through the front door, before the
complete stop of the left engine propeller.

Automatic Feathering Check

Propeller levers -MAX RPM

AUTO FEATHER switch -Move to TEST and maintain
Power Levers - Advance both levers until a 600 lb.ft
torque is obtained
AUTO FEATHER lights - ON

Power Levers - Retard ond of them, observing if the

AUTO FEATHER light of the opposite engine goes out when the torque value of the engine under test
lowers to 420 - 320 lb.ft. Continue retarding the lever and check if the AUTO FEATHER light of the
relevant engine goes out when the torque lowers to 250 - 150 lb.ft, When the propeller of that engine
starts to feather a decrease in Nh will occur and, in some cases, the AUTO FEATHER light of the engine
under test may cicle.

NOTE

When engine power lever is retarded, the corresponding auto feather light may not extinguish
completely. it may cycle instead. In that case, retard power lever as the minimum power stop and await
propeller feathering occurs, even while the light is cycling, the test result will have been satisfactory.

Return the lever to 600 lb.ft and repeat the same procedures with other engine.

Power levers - Min. Both lights go out and none of
