5 Product description

5.1 LASE 1000 D

Exact positioning of stock feeders, moving shuttles, cranes and automatic handling equipments, also to
various length measurements in various industries, requires distance measurement devices capable of
returning measurement values at a high measurement rate over great distances with millimeter precision.
Distance measurement devices are used wherever distances were previously measured by shaft
encoders or electromechanical measurement means. By their very nature, those mechanical
measurement value generators are highly susceptible to changes in ambient conditions, for example
temperature, and are also subject to aging and constant wear. Photoelectric distance measurement
devices are practically wear-free in operation and are easy to install with a built-in laser pointer.
Other advantages include short assembly and commissioning times, the high level of re¬liability offered
by a photoelectric measurement system, and the ease of replacement.
The model designation “-R” (non-reflector) indicates sensors, that are particularly suitable only measuring
with reflectors, e.g. with reflecting foil, glass prism etc.
The model designation of "T" ("Target") identicates sensors, that are suitable for measurements on
natural surfaces. As target shall comprise all natural surfaces with the exception of transparent and hot
surfaces.

The devices of LASE 1000D series are available with following interfaces included:

•RS-232 / RS-422 / SSI (Synchron-Serial Interface),

•PROFIBUS-DP
•Analog Output 4.. 20mA
•2 digital contact outputs

LASE 1000D photoelectric distance measurement devices meet the safety requirements of laser
protection class 1 (EN 60825) in measurement mode. The low level of emitted laser light ensures that
operating personnel will not be injured or suffer any adverse health effects

5.2 Measuring principle

The device works according to the principle of Time Of Flight Technology (TOF). The time between when
an invisible light pulse is emitted and when the reflected pulse is received is measured in the device.
Since the speed of light is constant, this time serves as a measure of distance. The light source and
receiver are both located in the device. By the LASE 1000D, this operation is exactly 20.000/s repeated.
By the measurement of LASE 1000D-R model, a reflector is required for the distance measurement. It
must be installed opposite the device. Because of its technical characteristics, the Time Of Flight
Technology (TOF) is especially suitable for highly accurate distance measurement over great distance,

LASE 1000D – User Manual

© LASE Industrielle Lasertechnik GmbH Page 12 of 70
compared to other methods. In comparison to other methods of distance measurement, a time-of-flight
measurement is largely independent of the measurement environment and can therefore also be used in
harsh everyday industrial settings with a high level of accuracy.
By a moving speed of up to 15 m / s the measurement method of Time Of Flight Technology (TOF)
shows his strengths here!

Transmitting and receiving times are recorded with high precision.

The echo signal can fluctuate considerably depending on the distance and the properties of the
object surface. These fluctuations are governed by a screen:

5.3 Reflection principles
Diffuse Reflection:
Most surfaces scatter the reflected laser beam in all directions. The
level of reflection will vary depending upon the structure and colour of
the reflecting surface. Brilliantly white plaster will reflect about 100 %
of the incident light, black fibrous rubber only about 2 % .
On very rough surfaces, some of the energy is lost through
shadowing.

Mirror-like reflections from rough surfaces:

The angle of reflection equals the angle of incidence. If the laser
beam strikes a surface at right angles, the energy reflection is
optimal. In case of diagonal impact a corresponding loss of energy
and range results..

Retro- reflectors:
Where the reflected angle is greater than 100 %, the incident light is
not scattered but will be reflected tightly bundled. This means, that a
large proportion of the transmitted energy can be received by the
rang finder. Plastic reflectors (cats eyes), reflecting foil and triple
prisms have this property.

Mirrors:
Upon striking highly polished surfaces, the laser beam is refracted
and deflected almost without loss.

Instead of the mirror surface, the object that is struck by the

refracted laser beam will be detected.

Small targets:
In the case of small objects, the laser beam may not be reflected in
full. The energy of the non-reflected part of the beam is lost. When
measuring small objects therefore a reduction in the range must be
expected.
Angled targets:
In the case of targets set at an angle, the measuring result must be
the average of the distances covered by the laser spot in order to
show the target profile as accurately as possible.
At close range (30m) or strongly remitting goals, there will be no
noticeable errors result, of the skew is <20cm.
In the far field can strongly inclined targets with a slope up to 1 m,
especially at low reflectance, cause distance errors up to 100mm
Background light:
Direct sunlight contains a certain amount of light of the same
wavelength as that used by the LASE 1000D. This background light
has a negative effect on the laser receiver. Direct sunlight can
therefore compromise the instrument’s accuracy..

6.3 Mounting of the sensor

 Do not aim the sensor at the sun

 Protect the LASE 1000D sensor against constant direct solar radiation!
 To avoid the formation of condensation water do not expose the sensor to a fast
temperatur subsidence!
 Do not expose the sensor to the effects of any aggressive chemicals!
 Assembly the LASE 1000D on a location, where as possible the device is
protected against damages, pollution and wetness.
 Pass the alignment cable in that way, that for persons the risk of stambling is
avoided and that all cables are protected against damages .
 If the switching outputs of the LASE 1000D are aligned to a machine, than
observe absolutely the machine manufacturer instructions.
 Keep the lenses and reflector of the device clean. Clean with a soft cloth, using
standard commercial glass cleaner if necessary!

The LASE 1000D can be aligned in any position. To minimize the pollution of the optics, the LASE 1000D
shouldn’t be mounted with the view upstairs in environments with intense dust accumulation or
precipitations.

The LASE 1000D is not adapted for the fix installation in the outdoor areas. By application

! conditions outside of the specifications mentioned in the technical data, the sensor must be
protected with an additional protection housing.
LASE will offer an extensive range of protective cases here.

LASE 1000D – User Manual

© LASE Industrielle Lasertechnik GmbH Page 19 of 70
For mounting the sensor, use provided M6 mounting holes in the stainless steel rails on the sides or the
bottom of the device.

The use of excess long screws can

damage the mounting thread of the
LASE 1000D. By choosing the length
of the screws, the thickness of the
support plus a washer and lock
washer has to be considered!

For optimal attachment and orientation of the reflector, the company LASE offers a broad product range
of protective cases and Adjustment supports. LASE-housing are completed with matching screws of the
sensor.

6.4 Reflectors

6.4.1 Reflector size (by using of LASE 1000D-R sensor)

The required reflector size is dependent on the light spot size. This grows with increasing distance. The
laser beam is measured by a divergence (expansion) of 2mrad. By selection of the reflector, make sure,
that the light spot diameter is ideally completely on the reflector.

If the LASE 1000D-R is used for the measurement on movable targets, for instance in an
hick rack warehouse, than while the assembly and adjustment the aim must be situated in
! the maximum distance. Reflectors and aims must be adjusted with reflector foil exactly on
the LASE 1000D-R.
If needed, apply information signs, interdicting aim changes.

LASE 1000D – User Manual

© LASE Industrielle Lasertechnik GmbH Page 21 of 70
The company LASE gives for the selection of the reflector board dimension only empirical values.

The reflector board dimension depends from the condition of the crane facility and the skew performance
of the crane.
The laser systems of the latest generation LASE 1000D-R have a divergence of the laser beam of 2mrad,
which corresponds to a measurement spot dimension of 1050 mm by a distance of 500 m. Dependent
from the measurement distance and the reflection features of the reflector board it is possible, that a
measurement takes place, if only a part of the laser beam hits the reflector board.

Tip: In order to enlarge it with low efforts, the substructure of the reflector board should contain
enough space .

Optionally, both digital outputs Q1 and Q2 can be, separately from each other, programmed

! as a "Warning contact“ by reflector loss.

reflector signal is too weak or completely lost
The switching outputs are active when the

Sensors of the LASE 1000D-T (natural surface) have a beam divergence of 6mrad!

6.4.2 Reflector alignment

Ein Folienreflektor ist so zu montieren, dass er um 2° geneigt montiert wird.

In order to avoid the beam inadvertently striking an adjacent surface, it should be aimed at point well
away from the edge of the target object.

6.5 Adjustment Sensor / Reflector

For the easy alignment a far more visible alignment laser pointer is located in the front of the sensor. With
this alignment laser pointer, the distance measuring device can be optimally aligned to the reflector.
When making adjustments, make certain the laser pointer is positioned at an offset to the measurement
optics. The adjustment, which must be made at maximum distance, works for both types of reflectors (foil
and plastic reflectors). At greater distances, the adjustment must be made at a reflector distance of no
less than 40 m. Offset of the measurement beam to the laser pointer: Horizontal 19mm and vertical
18mm (see chapter 18 Dimensions). To monitor alignment, the laser pointer can be turned on
permanently. An input must be configured accordingly. By factory, the laser pointer is configured in "Auto"
mode. If the sensor does not detect a target, the laser pointer will flash at a frequency of 1 Hz. When the

LASE 1000D – User Manual

© LASE Industrielle Lasertechnik GmbH Page 23 of 70
sensor is aligned with the target, the laser pointer flashes for another 2 minutes and then switches off
automatically. A test run with the laser pointer turned on serves to verify the position of the beam in
dynamic operation.

6.6 Assembly in Outdoor area

Temperature:
The temperature range, in which the laser may work, is between -10°C and +50°C
a) The laser system is to cool down with compressed air, cooling water or Peltier elements if
the maximum temperature of +50°C will probably be overstepped.
Corresponding cooling housing can be found at LASE.
b) The laser system is to heat by a heater, if the mimimum temperature of -10°C will probably
below.
Corresponding cooling housing can be found at LASE.

Atmospheric influence:
a) About the heating of the reflector board, the formation of condensation and ice on the reflector board
should be avoided.
b) About an extented ”protection and rain roof” the infiltration of rain or snow to the device should be
avoided

Influence by foreign light:

a) Prevent the laser device from direct sun exposure
b) Prevent the reflector board from direct sun exposure
If inevitable: The arrangement should be selected in that way, that the sun falls on the reflector board

When mounted outdoors, a housing must be used to protect the sensor from direct
envinmental effects. The device must be operated within the specified temperature range and

! protected aginst damp precipitation. See also chapter 6.7 “Recommendations for front pane
dimensions for a protective housing”“.

6.7 Recommendations for front pane dimensions

Notes:
- Apply anti-reflective coating for 905 mm
- Till front pane against axis of beam >2°

! -
-
The inside of the housing must not contain any reflective surfaces.
It is recommended to coat the inside of the housing with a non-gloss black vanish.
- The beam reflected by the front pane must generally not hit well-reflecting objects in

LASE 1000D – User Manual

the surroundings since this may create a “virtual” target hitting a surface at a distance
that can no longer be suppressed.
- Activate the close-range filter (see chapter 8.3.9)

7 Commissioning
After the device is turned on, it enters an initialization phase of about 10 seconds. The red front LED
(ERR) goes out as soon as the LASE 1000D has been correctly aligned to the target. The LASE 1000D is
ready for operation then. To achieve the best accuracy, allow a warm-up phase of 10 minutes. The
sensor has been tested and calibrated before delivery. It can be placed in operation immediately.

7.1 Connecting the Device

In order to ensure IP65 protection degree, the unused M12 connectors have to be fitted with protective
caps, which can be ordered as accessories.
The device is in conformity with protection class III. Please observe that the power supply has to be
ensured by power packs, which supply low protective voltage (PELV). The grounding of the cable screens
on the metal plug-in connectors in not a protective grounding suitable for protection of persons. It is
simply a functional grounding. The power supply of the LASE 1000D is direct current 18 V - 30 V DC. The
LASE 1000D has two digital connections that can be configured separately as an output. A connection
configured as an output has a ‘low’ electrical level of Ua < 1V and a ‘high’ level of Ua = UB - 1V at a
maximum load of 200 mA, whereby UB represents the supply voltage connected to the device. Both I/Os
can be configured as a high active or a low active connection. The maximum cable length is 30 m.
The pin assignment of the plugs is as follows:

7.1.1 Grounding / Shielding

Use for professional bus connections only standardized Profibus cable. Use for the RS-422 connections
for each input and output twisted pair cables. Use for the RS-232 connections no twisted lines!

LASE 1000D – User Manual

Cable shields must be connected only to the housings of the cable connectors.

Functional grounding of the shields is recommended, since the housing does not allow for any grounding.
If the shields need to be grounded for reasons related to EMC, Installation policy PROFIBUS-DP/FMS
Version 1.0.6 (PNO Order No. 8.022) INTERBUS Club must be observed.

Please use the pre-mounted socket tongue for the screen grounding. The socket tongue is screwed to the

8.3 Settings in the menu "Measurement"
The menu "Measurement" contains all the settings that directly affect the measurement performance of
the LASE 1000D.

8.3.1 Average mode

This option may be to average the measured values between the modes "Block-average "and "Moving-
average" converted. Default is a Block-average.

Block Average Block averaging is a summarization of a series of

individual measurements divided by the number
of the individual measurements. Subsequently,
the individual measurements are determined for
the next mean value block. The results of the
previous measurements are rejected.
The number of individual measurements entering
the mean value formation is used to determine
the quality of the statistics but also the output
rate. A high quality signifies a low measuring rate.
Block averaging is recommended for
applications with rapidly changing distances.

Moving Average

In case of the moving average value formation,

the oldest value is replaced by a current
measurement value. Each individual
measurement thereby already produces results.
This method is especially suitable for linear
distance changes, e.g., as with crane
positioning.

LASE 1000D – User Manual

© LASE Industrielle Lasertechnik GmbH Page 35 of 70
8.3.2 Averaging depth
Number of the measured values used to averaging an output value. The LASE 1000D has an internal
sampling rate of 20 kHz and thus has a 4x times higher internal sampling rate than the previous reflector
model (HD-P 600) and a 20x times higher internal sampling rate than the previous non-reflector model
(HD-P 100).

For backward compatibility with existing crane systems, all internal measurements of

! the LASE-1000D will be averaged therefore by a factor of 4!

Available for selection is an averaging over 1, 16, 64, 256, 512 and 1024 readings.
Default is 1024.

A large number of samples indicates a high quality of the statistics with a small scattering, or a slurring of
the measurement in case of the floating mean value formation depending on the repositioning speed.

8.3.3 Hold on halt

The "Hold on halt" function turns off the noise of the output distance value when the sensor is
deactivated. The measured value still remains active, but has a higher hysteresis depending on the noise
factor.

8.3.4 Offset
This value can be used to shift the zero point of the measurement so that several devices with different
positions can be preset to the same distances. The absolute sensing range is not modified as a result.

Notice:
 If the resulting measured value is negative, the device displays an error, in which case the offset
should be increased.
 The offset is also used when the reverse counting direction is activated.
 For the evaluation of the digital output values and the analog output, the adjusted offset reading will be
used.

8.3.5 Counting direction

The Counting direction setting is used to reverse the counting direction backward. The device displays 0
mm at maximum distance. If the distance decreases, the output value increases. The output measured
value is calculated from the difference between the range limit (800m) and the actual measured value.

8.3.6 Error threshold

The LASE 1000D performs an automatic evaluation of the reflected signal. If the signal is too strong or
too weak and the automatic aperture, the incident signal has not been in the area of work, the

LASE 1000D – User Manual

© LASE Industrielle Lasertechnik GmbH Page 36 of 70
measurement result can be noisy and thus inaccurate . The sensor then marks an internal measurement
as invalid and returns an error value of the interface.
In some measurement situations, such as for example fibrillation of the air, dust, fog, snow, etc. between
the sensor and the measurement target, an increasing of the Error threshold value can facilitate a still
possible measurement. The parameter "Error threshold" is, how many of the averaging used in the
measurements may be invalid without the resulting value is marked as invalid. Here, the invalid values
are ignored and do not contribute into the average distance value. For the error threshold 0%, 25%, 50%
and 75% are available. Default is 25%.
In situations where monitoring of the measuring capability is important, a small Error threshold value can
facilitate rapid reaction to an interruption of the measurement.

8.3.7 Output at Error

This option defines which distance value is issued in the event of an error.
You can choose between a replacement value (Display “9999,999m“, “No Echo“ to the serial Interface
and “0xFFFFFFFF“ to the Profibus-Interface) or the last valid measured. If the ‘last valid value’ setting is
selected and the device cannot detect a valid measured value before, the replacement value is output.

8.3.8 Error delay

This sets a time delay (in milliseconds), with the occurrence of an error from the device via the Profibus
as well as an appropriately configured output contact is signaled. As a result, temporary errors are hidden
(eg, temporary interruption of the measuring beam). The default value for the error delay is 50ms.

8.3.9 Close range filter

A Close-up range suppression facilitates the use of a front pane in a protective housing. Optical
interferences in the short range, which can already lead to faulty measurements because of even slight
pollution, are effectively suppressed. This increases the interval required for cleaning the pane. The Close
range filter can be activated optionally.
The close range suppression changes the measuring behaviour. The specified data are reached starting
at a distance of ~1,5m first. Without close range suppression, the specified data are valid in the entire
measuring area.
In plain language: If the received signal exceeds no specific size, then this signal is "hidden" by range-
nd
filter. The sensor search for a 2 target. The limit for this suppression is floating and not tied to a fixed
distance. Also it varies from device to device. When switched on, the close range suppression can cause
false results / mixed results, by measurements below 1.5 m distance. Only by a distance > 1.5m, LASE
GmbH can guarantee a 100% measurement.

9 Settings menu "Q1" and "Q2"
The LASE 1000D has 2 digital outputs: Q1 and Q2. About the parameters in the sub-menu "Q1" and
"Q2", the switching function of these outputs can be configured separately from each other.

9.1 Mode
Due this parameter the operating mode of the respective switching output can be defined. Currently the
following modes are available:

Mode "Threshould"
This mode allows you to change the state of the switching output as a function of the distance.
Therefore two thresholds (see below) are defined::
 If distance value < position N, then the switch output changes in the inactive state
 If distance value > position F, then the switch output changes in the active state
Thus, a hysteresis is defined as:

Mode "Limits Analog out"

In this mode, the output is active when the defined range of the analog interface is above or falls below
(see section Analog Interface).

Mode "Error Measurement"

In this mode, the output is active when the sensor cannot generate a valid measurement. This can be
caused for example by loss of the reflection line. Check for proper alignment and a clear view of the
reflector.
Notice: By this configuration, the switching outputs are defined with an upper and lower hysteresis of
10mm, to avoid possible switchings in case of measurement noise if the system is standstill.

Mode "Deactivated"
In this mode, the output will be permanently disabled.

9.2 Polarity
This menu defines the transition between the physical state of the I/O connections and the logical
evaluation:

Output level Output level

Logical condition
by "high-activ" by "low-activ"

inactiv low (Ua < 1V) high (Ua = UB - 1V)

activ high (Ua = UB - 1V) low (Ua < 1V)

9.3 Position N and Position F

The parameters "Position N" and "Position F" define the distance values (operating points), in which a
switching point changes its state.

Notice:
 There must always apply position N < F position.
 It is recommended that the distance between the thresholds “N” and “F” is larger than the noise of the
distance value in the selected averaging mode. Otherwise, it can come due by the measurement noise
to undesired changes of state of the output of the switching threshold.

10 Settings menu "Analog output"

The max. delay between the analog output to the serial port is 3ms. The resolution of the analog output is
16 bit.

10.1 Mode
For the analog output the following modes are selectable:

Mode "Rising Ramp"

The current increases in the range between N and F position linear from 4mA to 20mA

on:

Ersatzwerte: aus Ersatzwerte: ein

Ersatzwerte: aus Ersatzwerte: ein

Mode "Linear Ramp"

The current increases starting from the zero position of the distance measurement up to the position of F
linearfrom 0mA to 20mA:

Ersatzwerte: aus Ersatzwerte: ein

10.2 Position N and Position F

The parameters "Position N" and "Position F" define the operating values (thresholds) of the analog
output range.
Notice:
 There must always apply position N < F position.
 It is recommended that the distance between the thresholds N and F will be set to at least 20cm,
otherwise the measurement noise already leads to significant changes in the main stream!

10.3 Replacement values

This option enables the issuance of replacement values in accordance with NAMUR Recommendation.
Leaves the distance value of the analog output the defined working range between position N and F, it is
is indicated by a current of 3.6 mA (instead of 4 mA) or 21mA (instead of 20mA) (see sketches).

The analog interface is used for transmission of analog signals for monitoring.

Each conversion from digital into analog measuring values, shall be subject to different

! fluctuations. The accuracy range of the analog interface is defined with 1%

This means, that the analog output data differ from the digital source value by an amount of ±
1% of full scale.

11 Settings menu "Serial"

11.1 Mode

12 Settings menu "Profibus"

12.1 Adress
This parameter defines the node address for the Profibus.
The default address (unconfigured) is 126.

12.2 Parameter lock for Profibus communication

While active communication over Profibus, all parameters via the display only requested, but cannot
changed. This is indicated by a padlock icon in the upper right corner of the display.

12.3 Device configuration with active Profibus

Basically by operation over Profibus, the device will be configured via the GSD file!
Therefore the device will be integrated via Profibus GSD file into the Profibus project.
Thanks to the modular GSD file, you can selected now within the Profibus control, which process data will
be transmitted from the device ("PD-modules") or which device settings are changed ("module-specific
parameters"). All settings, which have chosen by menu settings or software usage before, will be
overwritten. Via the Profibus, all the settings that are displayed on the unit can be changed in this way
also.
When the device is put into operation via Profibus, all settings from the Profibus project will be
transferred to the device! By active Profibus communication, no changes of settings via the
display will be possible.

This behavior is by design. By this way, the Profibus control may set all essential parameters for the
device by one set. This ensures a runnable status of the device - even if the unit is exchanged!

13 Settings menu "Misc"

13.1 Display language

By this setting the language of the menus are changed. You can choose between German and English.
Default setting is English.

13.2 Display orientation

Use this menu item, the orientation of the display can be changed. By default, the option 0 ° is
active - in an overhead mounting, the orientation of the display can be rotated to 180 degrees.
The function of the keys is then also rotated by 180 degrees.

13.3 Laserpointer
The LASE 1000D features a laser pointer for alignment. The parameter of the operating mode of this
laser pointer can be changed. The following modes are available:
 ON – The laser pointer is turned on permanently
 OFF – The laser pointer is turned off permanently
 Auto– If the sensor detects no valid target, this is indicated by flashing the laser pointer with a
flashing frequency of 1 Hz. After the sensor was aligned to the reflector target, the laser
pointer flashes on and off for 2 more minutes then self.

13.4 Factory settings

In this menu, all parameters of the device will be reset to factory settings.

13.5 Version
This menu item, the version numbers for the hardware, firmware, and communication interfaces
(Profibus, Serial) will be shown.

14 Profibus
This section describes the use of the Profibus interface of the LASE 1000D. This presents the modular
presented GSD file of the sensor, then the format of the input data, output data and diagnostic
information.

The LASE 1000D sensor is supplied with a prepared function block FB23.

!
Information and instructions for install the function module, refer to the instruction manual: BA
Anleitung des LASE 1000D and den Profibus DP-E. You will find this on CD-Rom under
cheapter „Profibus/Funktionsbaustein“.

14.1 Modular GSD file

The LASE 1000D features a modular device description (GSD) file, which provides a set of process data
modules and Parameterization modules:

Modul Inputs Outputs Parameter

[PD1] Input: Distance value 4 Byte – 10

[PD2] Input: Score counter 2 Byte – –

[PD3] Input: Device temperature 1 Byte – –

[PD4] Output: Laserpointer – 1 Byte –

LASE 1000D – User Manual

© LASE Industrielle Lasertechnik GmbH Page 45 of 70
Of these modules only those which needed for the application must be configured.

Notice: Each module may be used only one time! When a module is selected twice, the sensor rejects
this configuration with a Parameter-Fault.

14.2 Process data modules

For the exchange of process data with the Profibus master four process data modules are available: PD1,
PD2, PD3 and PD4. These modules can be combined. The order in which PD1, PD2 and PD3 are
chosen also defines the order of their values within the input data.

[PD1] – Input Distance value

This module provides the current distance value as UINT32 input with resolution [mm].
About the module-specific parameters, the distance measurement can (similar to the menu on the device)
be configured.

[PD2] – Input Score counte

This module defines a UINT16 input with a score counter. The counter is incremented every time, if a new
distance value is available.

[PD3] – Input Device temperature

By this module, the current interior temperature of the unit in °C can be read as INT8 input. If theire is no
temperature value available, then the error value output is 0x80.

[PD4] – Output: dynamic control Laserpointer

This module defines a UINT8 output to the (dynamic) control of the laser pointer. About this output, the
laser pointer can be enabled or disabled in operation mode.

14.3 Process data

14.3.1 Distance value

The module [PD1] gives a distance value as an input with a size of 4 bytes. The data format is as UINT32
(Big Endian) defined:

Byte 0 Byte 1 Byte 2 Byte 3

high word low word

Distance value in [mm]

LASE 1000D – User Manual

© LASE Industrielle Lasertechnik GmbH Page 46 of 70
14.3.2 Score counter
The module [PD2] gives a result counter as an input with a size of 2 bytes. The data format is as UINT16
(Big Endian) defined.

Byte 0 Byte 1
MSB LSB
Scorecounter

The counter value is incremented with each update of the distance reading. Is the largest value (65.535),
so the counter starts from zero again.

14.3.3 Device temperature

By the module [PD3] the current device temperature is realized as an input with a size of 1 byte. The data
format is as INT8 (range -127 ° C ... 127 ° C) defined:

Byte 0

Temperature in °C

14.3.4 Control Laserpointer

By the module [PD4], a dynamic control of the laser pointer output is realized with a size of 1 byte. The
data format is as UINT8 defined:

Byte 0

Mode
Laserpointer

Valid values for the laser pointer mode are:

Mode Signification

0 Auto (automatically activated by

target loss)

1 ON (consistently activ)

2 OFF (consistently disabled)

All other values are ignored by the device. The previously selected mode remains unchanged.

14.3.5 Parameterization module
In contrast to the previously presented process data modules, there are a number of modules that are
only convenient parameter settings during startup. Each of these modules has neither input nor output
data, but each defines various module-specific parameters. The following modules are available. A
detailed description of each parameter is found in the chapter "Configuration of the device”.
[Q1] – Switching Output Q1
This module enables the parameterization of the switching output Q1. It can define the switching mode,
the polarity and the switching thresholds.
[Q2] – Switching Output Q2
This module enables the parameterization of the switching output Q2. It can define the switching mode,
the polarity and the switching thresholds.
[ANA] – Analog output 4..20mA
This module enables the parameterization of the analog output (4..20mA) of the LASE 1000D. It can be
defined the mode, the switching thresholds and the error behaviour
[SER] – Serial Interface
This module enables the parameterization of the serial interface. In this case, the mode of communication
(RS232, RS422, SSI) and the baud rate can be defined.
[DSP] – Display
This module enables the parameterization of the sensor display. This includes the language and
orientation of the display, also the operation mode of the laser pointer.
[RST] – Factory settings
This module has a special role. It allows you to reset the sensor to the factory settings by Profibus
parameters. Here, you can choose whether this should be done for all parameters, or only for the
parameters that are not for another one (selected) module configured explicitly.

14.3.6 Diagnostic data

The LASE 1000D provides in addition to the 7 byte of the standard diagnostic, optional 3 bytes extended
diagnostic data. If required, these advanced diagnostics can be disabled by the parameter "PB extended
diagnostic data " in the module [PD1].

The flags in bytes 7 and 8 provide status information on the condition of the distance measurement. In
case of an error, on the basis of these flags, the cause of invalid measurements can typically be
determined. The temperature in byte 9 is updated only if a temperature warning or a temperature alarm is
activated. It gives out each of the interior temperature, which is usually significantly different from the
outside temperature at the device (up to 30°C difference).

14.4 LASE HD-P Emulation

The LASE 1000D has the ability to emulate the Profibus LASE HD-P series. Therefore it´s possible to use
the LASE 1000D as a replacement unit for an existing LASE HD-P sensor, without to adjust the
configuration of a PLC system! This requires only a special GSD file for recoding to the control. The main
format of input, output and diagnostic data are mostly identical to the LASE HD-P, the input data and
output data is updated almost complete.

The GSD file for the HD-P emulation, as well as instructions for use, can be found
separately in the subdirectory "Profibus / Sonstiges / HD-P emulation"on the
supplied CD-ROM, and on request from your LASE partner!

A configuration code is composed of a three-digit ASCII number sequence ("code"), followed by a blank
and an ASCII string as parameter field ("parameter string"). The configuration code ends with a
CARRIAGE RETURN (line break, ASCII character 13).

The LASE 1000D responds to valid configuration codes with the letter „O“ (ASCII character 79):
Invalid configuration codes are acknowledged with an "E" (ASCII character 69)..

Continuous measurement, with continuous data output.

Single Mode „S“

Single measurement. The command "M" starts the measurement. Following to reading out of one
issu, the measurement is stopped again.

Request Mode „R“

The request mode means that the sensor constantly measures internally and thus there are
actual values, but the output of the interface will only be on request!
The internal measurement must be started with the command "M ". Subsequently, individual
measured values can be retrieved with the command "G" (get measurement).
The internal measurement is stopped by using the "S ".
In addition, the sensor can also be started via the "Autostart" parameterisation (305).
After applying the power voltage, the internal measurement starts automatically, the data is
output only at the request by using the "G".

15.3 Configuration overview
The current configuration (Config codes) as well as the device type and state are shown via the command
'C'. The command is only permitted outside of a measurement. General state information is output first.
The following table shows the output format and the sequence. Some values only constitute sample
information. The title is always terminated by a colon and a space. Then the value, followed by
<CR><LF> is output.

Subsequently, all adjustable configuration codes are output. The codes are always output in 3-digit
format. The respective setting is always output numerically and corresponds to the values specified when
using the respective configuration code. If the configuration code does not expect a direct number but a
selection of values then the number of the respective value is specified, beginning with 0. The sequence
of the corresponding codes, including the consecutive number, results from the parameter table:

15.5 Measurement configuration

Autostart
After switching on the sensor, the sensor measurement starts with the last saved parameters
automatically

Active dynamic control

The sensors of the LASE1000D series are equipped with an active dynamic control, which adjusts the
aim of measuring the light reflected automatically to an optimal response value.

This ensures a high measuring accuracy even at very different remissions, in example of very little
reflected light on dark targets up to very much reflected light measurements on very bright targets
(reflector).
The active dynamic control works with a maintenance-free motor.
A concession to the high measurement accuracy over the wide measuring range and their different
remissions, is a response time of the dynamic control of up to one second by large reflectance changes.

15.6 Temperature query

The temperature warning and shutdown due to the reason of overstepping or underrunning the allowed
device temperature, is handled treated equally by the serial and profibus mode. The transmitted
temperature value corresponds to the internal device temperature. The internal temperature is about 25 °

LASE 1000D – User Manual

C above the ambient temperature

The maximum allowed operation temperature (measured in the sensor): 80°C

Warning excessive temperature on >80°C
Disable by excessive temperature >85°C
Restart temperature <82°C
Warning excessive temperature off <77°C
Warning subnormal temperature on <0°C
Disable by subnormal temperature <-10°C
Restart temperature >-7°C
Warning subnormal temperature off >+3°C

Temperature RS-232 / RS-422:

Query
The temperature can be queried using the command “T”.

This command is not permitted during a measurement. In the ASCII mode (output format of the
measurement value), the output is always in integer format and with the appended unit of measure,
degree Celsius ("C").
The temperature output is followed by the statement ",_OK" if the temperature lies in the valid range.
Otherwise the statement "_NOK" is added. The complete output is formatted to 12 characters aligned at
the right so that it is flush with the measurement value output (without unit of measure).

Shutdown
The LASE 1000D sensor is equipped with the operating status temperature cut-off that is activated when
the permitted operating temperature is exceeded or fallen short of. The permanent shining red Error-LED
and the blinking Display text, indicates this mode.

Start of measurement
If a sensor is in the status temperature cut-off a measurement cannot be started.
Each new measurement command ("M") is acknowledged once using "TempErr !__??"

Continuous measurement
An continuous measurement is interrupted and spent the last measurement value as "TempErr !__??".
Each new measurement command ("M") is acknowledged once using "TempErr !__??"

Switched laser pointer

If the marking laser pointer is switched on and the temperature condition is reached, the laser is switched
off independently of the measured state.
LASE 1000D – User Manual
© LASE Industrielle Lasertechnik GmbH Page 57 of 70
Approved commands in state temperature shutdown
In this state, all commands are allowed. The marking laser can not be turned on. The command "M" is
answered with "TempErr !__??".
All set before the shutdown temperature parameters remain unaffected. When the temperature returns to
the normal range, the sensor automatically starts the measurement again. If parameters are changed in
the shutdown state, they are valid by remain normal temperature.
Example: The laser marker can be turned off with the command "O", so that it will not switch on again
when the sensor reached its permitted temperature. The command "S" to end a measurement is also
allowed. The sensor is then discontinued the measurement by achievement of valid operating
temperature.

Reaching the valid operating temperature

The status temperature cut-off can only be left by reaching a valid operating temperature. In this case, the
marking laser is activated again if its status is still "switched on". If the measuring status is still
"interrupted", the measurement will be resumed without additional messages.

17 Maintenance and Repair

17.1 Maintenance
Observe the applicable national regulations for maintenance.
Basically, the sensor is maintenance free.
Nonetheless, check the technical safety of the sensor system at regular intervals, particularly watching
out for damage to the housing.
Occasionally check the sensor for dirt or other contaminant buildup. To clean the sensor, use a dry or
moist soft cloth to wipe the sensor at regular intervals. This action will ensure optimal function.
The housing is made by parts of plastic. For this reason avoid contact with acetone and detergents
containing solvents.

17.2 Repair
If it seems likely that continued operation is no longer possible without danger, the sensor system must
be taken out of operation and protected against unintentionally being placed in operation. Return the
device to LASE GmbH for repair. Interventions and modifications are potentially hazardous, and any
warranty and manufacturer's liability shall become void.

18 Fault elimination

18.1 Parasitic error

• The sensor must be firmly mounted. It must not vibrate.
• The sensor should be mounted away from humidity.

Notice:
! When measuring insulation, make sure that the suppressor diodes have been installed for
EMC stability
