Dollar soars to new high CM seeks support of PM

KARACHI (Online): The ru-
pee plunged to hit an all time
low  of  Rs150/dollar  in  the
open market on Friday morn-
ing.
The greenback gained by
another  Rs2.48  in the  inter-
bank market to reach the lat-
est  peak  of  Rs149.  It is  cur-
rently being bought for Rs147
in the interbank market.
The rupee plunged around
five  percent  in an intraday
trade  on  Thursday  to  hit  an
all-time  low  of  148/dollar  in
an  apparent devaluation by
the  central bank  as  a  ‘prior
action’  to satisfy  the IMF  to
secure an approval of $6 bil-
lion bailout package, analysts
said.
The  rupee, h owever,
slightly recovered to close the
day 3.6  percent  weaker  at
146.52  in  the  interbank  mar-
ket. The rupee closed 141.40/
dollar on Wednesday.
Analysts said the devalu-
ation has  added  up  around
Rs667  billion  in Pakistan’s

lice cells were being established
in  federal  capital’s  all  police

The  cells  would  be  op-
erational  by  the  end  of  July,

for establishing the fast track
courts in the capital and soon
this  idea  would  also  see  the

the matter.

Electrical Vehicle Policy
Yesterday, Prime Minister Imran Khan
has directed the Climate Change Min-
istry to finalize electric vehicle policy
in the next two weeks and present it
before the cabinet for approval. He gave
the directions during a high level meet-
ing on Climate Change in Islamabad.
The Prime Minister was informed that
the main reason of environmental pol-
lution in Punjab province is the smoke
emitted by the vehicles. Therefore, it is
important to promote electric vehicles
in the country. This will not only help
cut oil imports but also address envi-
ronmental issues. The Prime Minister
was also informed about the steps taken
to combat smog in Punjab province and
about the impact of climate change in
Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.

seventh largest reserves in the world
which can be used for producing
100,000 megawatt of electricity for next
two centuries. Coal reserves in Thar are
estimated as 175 billion tons, which is
equal to 50 billion barrels of oil and
2,000 trillion cubic feet of gas.
At present, the country’s most im-
portant problem is to control the prices
of petroleum products, which are in-
creasing very fast. The government can
control prices of petroleum products
with two types of preventive measures.
First, we have to find alternative sources
of energy, the other is to minimize use
of petroleum consuming machines and
vehicles and to transfer them to alter-
native energy. As per the vision of
Prime Minister Imran Khan, the prepa-
ration of the National Electrical Vehicle

KP CM approves e-transfer
policy for education dept
PESHAWAR (APP): Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa  Chief Minister
Mehmood Khan has  ap-
proved  e-transfer  policy  for
the education department un-
der which all  posting  and
transfers  would  be  made  on
merit.
An official communiqué
of Elementary and Secondary
Education issued here Friday

ment was made on merit and
now transfers would be done
on the  same  grounds  that

ment  in hard  area,  monthly
tests,  annual  result  of  stu-
dents.

Gas production declining

SMS service for issuance
of fresh currency notes
KARACHI (APP):  State
Bank of Pakistan, through its
subsidiary SBP Banking Ser-
vices Corp oration has re-
launch ed the  SMS  service
(8877)  for issuance  of  fresh
currency notes to the general
public.
The fresh currency notes
will  be  available  from  desig-
nated comm ercial  b an k
branches called “e-branches”
and the sixteen field offices of
SBP-BSC. The booking of the
service shall commence from
May 19,  while  issuance  of
fresh currency through mobile
SMS  service  will  start  from
May 20, and will continue till
May 31, 2019, said SBP press
release on Friday.

vided through 1702 e-branches
and  16  SBP-BSC  offices  in
142 cities  across  Pakistan  to

ISLAMABAD  (APP): Cen-
tral  Directorate  of  National
Savings (CDNS) has achieved
a  net target  of  Rs355  billion
by  May10, of the  fiscal  year
2018-19  as  compared  to  last
year’s collection of Rs 126 bil-
lion.
The total savings held by
the  CDNS  stood  at  Rs1,691
billion  by May  10, while  the
directorate had Rs747 billion
by the same date, a year ago, a
senior official  of  the  CDNS
told APP here on Friday.
Due to the rationalization
of  CDNS  certificates’  rates,
the  directorate  has  collected
more  savings than  expected;
therefore  it  will  increase  the
set target of Rs224 billion for
May  2019.
The  official  said the
CDNS  notified  the  upward
revision in the profit rates for
various  saving  certificates,
which has  been applicable
from January 1, increasing the
trend of people investing more
at the CDNS. “The instant re-
vision was made in the back-
drop  of  current  market  sce-
nario and in accordance with
the  government’s  policy to
provide a market-based com-
petitive  rate  of  return  to  the
investors  of  National  Sav-
ings”, the official said. He said,
as per the notification issued
by the federal government, the
new rates for Defense Savings
Certificate,  Special  Saving
Certificate,  Regular  Income
Certificate, Savings Accounts,
Shuhada Family Welfare Ac-
count  have  been  revised  up-
ward  at  an  average  of  12.47
percent, 11.40  percent.

that Thar Coal Field was the
seventh largest coal reserve in
the world  with a capacity  to
produce 100,000 MW  of

lion tones of oil and 2,000 tril-
