Market JULY 21, 2017
UPDATE
BSE-30: 32,029
The curious case of the Indian market, Part 2. Our analysis of price performance of
a few stocks before their results shows that the Indian market has become fairly
‘efficient’ in anticipating positive or negative ‘surprises’ in quarterly results. We admire
and applaud the Street’s proficiency in deciphering financial and operating performance
of companies from public information. We hope that the Street will spend the same
effort and time to appreciate longer-term drivers and anticipate inflection points better.
Stock ‘A’ shows sharp movements in its share price before its results QUICK NUMBERS
Exhibit 1 shows the performance of Stock ‘A’ before results date for the past four quarters and Nifty-50 Index is
also compares its performance with that of the stock market. As can be seen, the stock moved trading at 20.7X
up sharply ahead of its June 30, 2017 results, which surprised the market positively on both FY2018E ‘EPS’ and
volume growth and net profits. On the other hand, the stock moved down sharply before its 16.9X FY2019E ‘EPS’
September 30, 2016 results, which were weaker versus Street expectations. This could be a
mere coincidence. We expect FY2018E
and FY2019E net
Stock ‘B’ shows large movements in its share price before its results profits of the Nifty-
Exhibit 2 shows the performance of Stock ‘B’ before results date for the past four quarters and 50 Index to grow
also compares its performance with that of the stock market. As can be seen, the stock moved 6% and 22%
up sharply ahead of its June 30, 2017 results, which surprised the market positively on both
volume growth and net profits. It is interesting to note that the stock shows quite significant The banking sector
movements ahead of its results. However, it may simply mean that the Street can gauge the contributes 64%
performance of the quarter based on public information, ‘big data’ analysis and interactions and 36% of the
with the company’s dealers, suppliers, etc. incremental profits
for FY2018E and
Stock ‘C’ shows interesting movements in its share price before results FY2019E
Exhibit 3 shows the performance of Stock ‘C’ before results date for the past four quarters and
also compares its performance with that of the stock market. As can be seen, the stock
generally moves up ahead of its results only for it to give up the gains post the results. The
market perhaps expects a strong performance from the company but the company seems to
have generally disappointed versus expectations. The Street is perhaps unable to gauge the true
performance of the company based on public information.
The Street’s proficiency in anticipating quarterly results perhaps reflects (1) its superior grasp of Sanjeev Prasad

companies and stocks over time, (2) extensive research into quarterly drivers of companies’ Mumbai: +91-22-4336-0830
financial and operating performance and (3) frequent interactions with dealers and suppliers of
companies, which may provide insights into short-term trends. We admire and applaud the Sunita Baldawa

Street’s efforts to understand short-term drivers and trends that may affect a company’s Mumbai: +91-22-4336-0896
quarterly performance. The investment world would be presumably better off if the Street were

to spend the same effort and time in understanding longer-term drivers of sectors, companies anindya.bhowmik@kotak.com
and stocks. Mumbai: +91-22-4336-0897
