Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to familiarize the students with the functions, instrumentation and control techniques for the operation of
modern power generation plant.

Pre-requisites: Measurement & Measuring Instruments, Transducers & Applications.

Brief survey of methods of power generation – Hydro, thermal, nuclear, solar and wind power – Importance of Instrumentation in power
generation – Thermal power plants – Block diagram – Details of boiler processes -P&I diagram of boiler – Cogeneration, Control 20

Module II Instrumentation and Control in Water Circuit
Water Circuit-Boiler Feed Water Circulation: Natural Circulation, Forced Circulation, Combined Circulation- Measurements in Water
Circuit: Steam and Water Flow Measurement: orifice, venture, flow nozzle, Differential Pressure Transmitter (DPT)- Water and Steam
Pressure Measurements: bourdon tube, diaphragm, bellows- Water and Steam Temperature Measurements: Thermocouple and RTD- 20
Drum Water Level Measurement: Differential Pressure methods- Controls in Water Circuit: Boiler Drum Level Control, Superheated
Steam Temperature Control, Steam Pressure Control- Impurities in Water and Steam- Impurities in Raw Water- Effects of Impurities-
Measurement of Impurities- Feed Water Treatment.

Loops , Functions of Control System , Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) Controls , Boiler Water Reactor (BWR) Controls , Liquid
Metal Cooled Reactor (LMCR) Control, Role of Reactor Controls during Start-up, Normal Operation and Shut Down- Nuclear radiation

Student Learning Outcomes:


After completing the course, student will be able to
1. Describe the process of power generation.
2. Demonstrate the working of Instrumentation and Control in Water Circuit
3. Illustrate the operation of Instrumentation and Control in Air-Fuel Circuit
4. Apply the distributed control concept for boiler and turbine control
5. Distinguish the nuclear power plant instrumentation with respect to other types of plants

The class will be taught using class room lecture. In addition, assignment and seminar/presentation will be conducted
