Sequence of events within a chamber

by CrazyBlend on Feb 18, 2010 (12:41 am)

I'm having a little trouble understanding the precise sequence of events within a chamber. (Maybe I'm being too meticulous.) Please let me know if this is right:

1. The PCs enter the chamber (in marching order).

2. As they enter (or immediately after they enter), they take a turn to find/disarm/sidestep any trap that's present. (After firstly making reaction rolls.)

3. If there is a trap that's not found/disarmed/sidestepped in the preceding step, the trap springs.

4. The PCs take one or more turns to deal with the effects of the trap????? (Such as helping their comrade climb out of the hole.) (After making a reaction roll at the beginning of each of
those turns.)

5. Then, the PCs take one or more turns to deal with any creature(s) present??? (After making a reaction roll at the beginning of each of those turns.)

6. Then (assuming they defeat the creatures), they take one or more turns to find treasure and/or perform other activitives??? (After making a reaction roll at the beginning of each of
those turns.)

Thanks for any clarification.

Some followup questions, related to the process of moving from one chamber to the next:

When the party enters a new chamber, how is marching order determined? Is that another reaction roll? Or do the players just decide?

Does the act of crossing the threshold from one chamber to the next constitute a turn? If so, when would any of the characters do anything other than move with the party into the next
chamber?

Do we presume that the entire party has fully entered the new chamber before anyone does anything within that chamber (e.g. search for traps)?

The players choose the marching order (unless some special rule overrides it).

Crossing a threshold does not constitute a turn unless combat is currently active (fleeing is a turn, for example).

Yes, the full party enters a new chamber by default before springing traps, et al.

Question on the reaction tasks.

After traps are sprung, and dealth with, a new reaction task is rolled for combat, correct?

Do you roll reaction tasks for both players and monsters? And if so is the order player, monster, player, player, montser, etc.... OR Players first based on task rolls, then monsters based on
task rolls... All assuming both need task rolls. Thanks

Yes, do it for all characters, including monsters, each turn. So every turn has a different order, with monsters mixed in the order.

Cool, thanks.

One more question on the order.. Switch position says that only if 2 players turns are right after each other. Does that mean that if a monster is between 2 players in the order they can't
switch?

Technically, yes - the monster interrupts them, but you can house rule that a monster taking a turn does not affect them switching positions.
