THE TRUMPET CALL 1

Our Mission: To love Jesus Christ and to share His Love

Our Vision: To be a Christian community where Christ is transforming lives
East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church Volume V Issue 20 May 19th, 2019

I am so proud of the Mission Team we have here at ESUMC under the direction of Pat Braun! In other
churches, there may be mission teams which keep track of the money coming in and make sure it gets to
the supported missionaries in a timely manner. Our Mission Team goes the extra mile (and more!). Not
only do we invite our US-based missionaries to come and speak on a regular basis and interact with the
congregation, we go to see them in action in their native environments. That’s certainly what’s behind our
mission trip to Russia this summer to see our Russian brothers and sisters in Christ in action for the
Gospel of Jesus Christ in a somewhat hostile culture.
Much closer to home, four Mission Team members recently traveled to Temple University in Philadelphia to spend time with
Faith Promise partners Ryan and Jasmin Moyer. After a tour of the campus they attended Intervarsity Fellowship's large group
meeting which is totally student-run. Below are some quotes from those who went on this field trip in early May:
1. Alberta Dieter – “Spending time with Ryan and Jasmin and going to the meeting gave me a better understanding of
what they do and how we support them. It is nice to have a face to go with a name and to learn more about what the
Mission Team does.”
2. Ray Moeller – “It was exciting to see their ministry in action and join with them in celebration of their successes.”
3. Joyce Moeller – “Attending the meeting made it more personal for me. Ryan and Jasmin are reaching a lot of people
and training them to be leaders.”
4. Pat Braun – “Walking around the campus with Ryan and seeing him interact with the students we met reminded me
that we have to have a relationship with a person before we can bring them to Jesus. I met a student, Matt, who told
me that his faith wouldn't be where it is without Intervarsity, and that Intervarsity is the only Christian organization on
campus. He thanked us for supporting Ryan and Jasmin.”
That last quote from Pat makes it all so real to me; that what we’re supporting through our Faith Promise offerings is making a
real difference in people’s lives. Our church’s vision is about seeing “lives transformed by Christ,” and here’s a young man
whose life has been transformed because of the missionaries we support. This is a gentle reminder to the congregation that
our Faith Promise offerings are helping to transform lives every day. Our offerings thus far in 2019 have lagged some, meaning
that we can’t support our missionaries at the full level we believe God has called us to as a congregation. Please don’t ignore
those Mission envelopes when you see them in your bulletin once per month, but remember the good work Ryan and Jasmin
and many others are doing in the journey Christ has called them to.
On another note, I want to thank Pauline, Joe, the instrumentalists, the singers, the narrators, and the actors who participated
in the Spring 2019 Cantata on May 5. It was a beautiful, heartfelt, convicting message about prayer and the two-way
communication we have with God through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I look forward to seeing you this Sunday, May 19,
as we take another look at Esther, who was called to her work, “for such a time as this.” Her work for God’s Kingdom has much
to inform us about our own work today. Finally, if you’d like to get “hands-on” in mission, you have that opportunity this Sunday
afternoon, May 19, 5:00 pm at Faith UMC in Stroudsburg. Our local UMC cluster will be assembling health kits to be used in
flood damaged zones here in the US and abroad through UMCOR. We have been collecting these supplies and are anxious to
put them together in these kits to get them where they most need to go!

Blessings in Christ,
Pastor Jim

Just in time for Mother’s Day, the ESUMC Nursery Preschool Class learned what the Bible says about obeying and
honoring your parents. To recognize their mothers, and special women in their lives, they sponge painted I Love U

Grief Share Program “Support”

Have you ever wondered how you can encourage, support
and minister to a friend or family member that recently lost
a loved one? Maybe it’s a co-worker, or someone you know
closely from your neighborhood or Church. Losses like this
happen all around us, how will we respond to those in
need?
Often times, when someone loses a loved one, people
flock to the grieving and genuinely offer their condolences,
comfort and support to the grieving family and friends left
behind. And though that expression of love is greatly appreciated, it can sometimes feel short lived in the lengthy
season of grief a individual is left to process and work through. The GriefShare lends a unique opportunity for peo-
ple—just like you— to walk alongside someone who’s grieving, lending them “just a little more” loving support as they
attend the seminars. It could be just a few classes, or possibly all of the 13 (if you feel so inclined), but the main fo-
cus, is simply to invite & support your family/friend/coworker by coming with them to GriefShare (at least initially).
There, you’ll watch a video seminar and hopefully help put their heart and mind at ease, simply by the blessing of
your presence.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Paul beckons the disciples of Christ: “...encourage and build each other up...” Do you need
a little of that right now? If so, we sincerely encourage you to reach out to Rachael Thompson, ESUMC’s Director of
Congregational Care at rthompson@esumc.net Or perhaps, you, being a disciple of Christ, can think of someone
who really needs that “encouragement and building up” in the midst of their grief. Please prayerfully take some time
to consider how the Lord would have you reach out to this individual; and, if lending your support at GriefShare is
something you’re able to do. Think about it, pray about it—act in love.
