TExES Competencies aligned with Education 1301

Competency 001: The teacher understands human development processes and applies this
knowledge to plan instruction and ongoing assessment that motivate students and are responsive
to their developmental characteristics and needs.

Human development is a very important aspect to consider when planning classroom instruction.
Students are constantly growing and developing. It is up to the teacher to plan accordingly, so
students are able to learn as they develop.

Competency 002: The teacher understands student diversity and knows how to plan learning
experiences and design assessments that are responsive to differences among students and that
promote all students’ learning.

Every child is different and unique in their own way. No one person is the same. And, because of
this, every student learns differently. It is important that lesson plans are designed in a way that
every child can learn, despite their differences.

Competency 003: The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent
instruction and assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.

There is always a goal that is trying to be reached. It is the teacher’s responsibility to teach
toward that goal. As a teacher, one should assess their students, to make sure they are
progressing toward the set goal or objective.

Competency 004: The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student
learning and demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and
appropriate assessments.

Each child learns differently. So, it is important for the teacher to plan lessons that accommodate
each student’s needs. Assessment should be fair, but should also be conducted in a way where
different learning processes and factors are taken into consideration.
Competency 005: The teacher knows how to establish a classroom climate that fosters learning,
equity and excellence and uses this knowledge to create a physical and emotional environment
that is safe and productive.

It is very important that students feel safe and accepted by their teacher. They should feel
comfortable in the classroom. By the teacher providing this sort of environment, the students are
more likely to reach their full potential.

Competency 006: The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive
learning environment and for managing student behavior.

A classroom should be an organized and managed environment. A teacher should keep their
classroom in order, both materials and student behavior-wise. This creates a better learning
environment for the students.

Competency 007: The teacher understands and applies principles and strategies for
communicating effectively in varied teaching and learning contexts.

“Communication is key.” A teacher should make sure they communicate to their students in a
way that the student understands. It is critical that the students know what is expected of them,
through clear communication.

Competency 008: The teacher provides appropriate instruction that actively engages students in
the learning process.

Students should feel as though they are a part of their learning experience. It is still important for
the teacher to be in charge of their classroom. However, it is equally important that they include
their students in the process of learning.

Competency 009: The teacher incorporates the effective use of technology to plan, organize,
deliver and evaluate instruction for all students.

Technology is an essential part of our lives. Teachers should utilize the technology they have
access to in the classroom. It is beneficial to the learning and teaching process.
Competency 010: The teacher monitors student performance and achievement; provides students
with timely, high-quality feedback; and responds flexibly to promote learning for all students.

It is a teacher’s responsibility to be aware of students’ performance. They should also inform


their students of their performance level throughout the school year, in order for students to stay
on track. A teacher should be flexible to students’ differences and encourage learning to all.

Competency 011: The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in children’s
education and knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families.

Family involvement is very important. The teacher should be able and willing to reach out to the
families of their students in order to get them involved. Learning does not end in the classroom.

Competency 012: The teacher enhances professional knowledge and skills by effectively
interacting with other members of the educational community and participating in various types
of professional activities.

It is up to the teacher to notice if a student is falling behind or if they have significant learning
differences. And, then they should notify other members of education and work together to
provide the help the student needs to be successful. Teachers and staff should work as a team to
provide the best learning environment that they can.

Competency 013: The teacher understands and adheres to legal and ethical requirements for
educators and is knowledgeable of the structure of education in Texas

It is very important for a teacher to be on alert for anything that may suggest a child is not safe.
As a teacher, one is responsible for reporting to proper authorities when they think a child is
being abused in any way. Students safety is of utmost importance.
